It's a story which begins well over a century ago. The original Brattisani's, on Church Lane in Stockbridge, was opened in 1889 by Giuseppe Brattisani, who was part of the first wave of Italian families to settle in the city, after immigrating from Parma in the 1870s. When Giuseppe enlisted with the Italian army during the First World War, his wife took over the running of the chippy. Mercifully, he survived the war, and on returning to Edinburgh decided to open a new fish and chip shop – the Deep Sea, on Union Place, which he later sold to the Crolla family. After the demolition of Union Place in 1970, the Deep Sea moved to Antigua Street, where it still serves fish and chips to this day. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Next to take over the family business was Giuseppe's son, Joseph, who earned the nickname of 'Mr Chips'. At one time or another, he ran five restaurants in Auld Reekie. His sons, Charles and Joe, would then follow in their father's footsteps. Brattisani's chippies were loved by generations of families in Edinburgh. Charles Brattisani opened his first shop in 1961, lending the family name to what became a hugely-popular chippy on Henderson Row. Joe, meanwhile ran another thriving fish and chip shop on Brougham Place in Tollcross. In 1966 and 1970 respectively, the brothers Brattisani opened branches in Haymarket and Newington. Both those chippies survived for over three decades, and arguably the most famous of all the Brattisani-run emporiums. The branch on Newington Road, in particular, is the stuff of local legend. For many people brought up in the city, no hard day's swim at the Royal Commonwealth (Commie) Pool was complete without a visit to this chippy, which was memorable for its red seating booths. The Haymarket chippy shut its doors in 2002, with the Newington branch serving its last fish supper just two years later. It's a case of gone but never forgotten for Edinburgh residents. We asked our readers for memories of Brattisani's famous chippies – and hundreds of you responded. Below are some of those recollections. David Turnbull wrote: 'My dad told us he was taking us out for a meal. Mum thought it would be somewhere posh so we all got dressed up - he took us to Brattisani's at Haymarket. Fish suppers, bread and butter and a pot of tea – and we loved it.' Lesley Gallier recalled: 'Starting my nursing training we stayed in the nurses home round the corner from there in Newington. 1977. Dougie Ewart wrote: 'Used to come down from the Commy pool with all my mates and then into Brattisani's for a chippy. I always got sausages and they would give you a few chips if you got a single, with salt & sauce. While your mates who ordered, sometimes you would miss the bus. But it would stop at traffic lights, and you had to run over the road, bolt to the traffic lights, get over the road, and catch it as it stopped around the corner. Laughing as we ran along the road with supper in hand trying to catch the bus... great chippy great times.' Moira F Gray remembered: 'Brattisani's at Haymarket after ice skating at Murrayfield on a Friday night. Best ever chippy! Neil Tomlinson said: 'I would always go there after swimming, I also took my daughter once and she listened to some stories. I also loved the tomato chippy sauce on my chips.' Sitting on the bus eating our supper heading home. Years later, taking our children and sitting in the booths reminiscing.' Last, but not least, Samantha Brattisani chipped in with some kind words for Evening News readers, saying: 'It was my dad, Joe Brattisani, who owned the shop. Dad and family (Maria, Eric, Charles and George Brattisani) that ran the shops for many years. Everyone I know, including me, loved going to the Commonwealth Pool then to the Newington chippy. That has never been forgotten – thanks to all that take the time to comment.'

The dress is made out of 100% cotton and is machine washable. According to Boden, it has a flattering fit and flare shape, with the length finishing at mid calf and the sleeves reaching elbow length. Or with an even cheaper price tag, you could buy Bright Blue Floral Embroidered Sleeve Tiered Midi Dress from New Look for £35.99. One reviewer noted that they had to size up, but were overall happy with their purchase. They said: "I am used to Boden sizing now so although a 14 in high street shops I went for a 12 and it fits perfectly. "It's super comfortable and so gorgeous - wore it for the first time yesterday and got lots of compliments from strangers!" Another customer also said they had received compliments in the dress and said: "This dress is absolute perfection. The fabric and embroidery quality is excellent. It is heavy and well made, but still very comfortable. "I love the pockets, and the length is just right, hitting just above the ankle (I am 5'4" for reference). I got several compliments the first time I wore it!" While another reviewer had this to say: "This dress is delightful and I feel delightful wearing it! The fabric is comfortable and forgiving. Oregon seal pup stabbed multiple times as NOAA seeking to track down person of interest

An elephant seal pup suffered "multiple stab wounds" in an attack at an Oregon beach, prompting the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to launch a search for a person of interest. The NOAA's Office of Law Enforcement said this week that the incident happened on March 16 in Neskowin, Oregon, along a stretch of shoreline in front of the Proposal Rock Condominiums. "While the young elephant seal survived, it sustained multiple stab wounds. The Marine Stranding Team monitored and evaluated the animal before relocating it," the NOAA said in a statement. The agency released a sketch of a person of interest, described as a White male "Approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall, with a standard build, black and white hair, a groomed beard, and a large gap between his front teeth." The seal that was stabbed likely left its mother very recently and was on its own to learn to hunt, Milstein said. Once it had grown a bit more, it would have likely made its way back to breeding areas around the Channel Islands off Southern California. The NOAA said "Harassing, harming, killing or feeding wild elephant seals is prohibited under the Marine Mammal Protection Act" and "Violations can be prosecuted civilly or criminally and are punishable by up to $100,000 in fines and up to 1 year in jail per violation."
