Soil from trench washed away at Ponda, power cables exposed
Ponda:
The soft soil used to fill the electric cable trench at Khandepar, Ponda, was washed away after incessant rain during Thursday night leaving the cables exposed.
The electricity department has claimed that there is no threat or danger since the cables are not electrified yet.
The department had also begun work to refill the trench by taking precautions so that it is not washed off again.
Deepak Gawas, electricity executive engineer at the Curti Ponda sub-station, said the cables are being laid to carry 33kv power to the water treatment plants at Curti hill. The work is still under way.
He said that continuous rain and the lack of proper storm water drainage caused the soil covering the trench to wash away. He added that the heavy flow of rainwater down the hilly terrain added to the situation
.
Gawas said the cables are being laid between the Curti-Ponda sub-station and Curti water treatment plants. Of the 1km-long trench, only 30m of the trench has created issues. Work is going on war footing and will be carried out with proper care, Gawas said.
