For some of the smaller schools and nurseries across the area, this can mean a whole school coming along to spend the day in Blair Atholl. Age appropriate for children ranging from 3 to 12 years, the Schools Open Day aims to demonstrate the varied range of tasks and activities carried out on the (size) estate by the various departments that work there on a daily basis. Led by the Rangers Department, activities lined up this year include the game department demonstrating its use of Highland Garron ponies which traditionally bring Deer down from the hillside, together with a Gundog Display. The Farming team lays on its very popular tractor tours, whilst also of huge interest to the children is the 'build a house' activity, delivered by the Estate's Works team. Not to be outdone, staff at Blair Castle itself provide a fun dressing up box which makes for great photographs. Atholl Estates is a fantastic environment for young children Commenting on this year's Schools Day, Head Ranger, Julia Duncan, said 'Schools Day is one of the best and most enjoyable days we host on the estate, a real team effort, always resulting in lots of tired, but happy, children at the end of the day.' 'As it only takes place once every two years, this is only my second experience of it,' said Julia. 'As far as we are aware, no other estate in Scotland hosts anything like this, involving, on average, 500 children.' 'The emphasis on the day is very much to make sure the children have fun, together with ensuring that they are able to understand the varied work we do here on the estate.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Commenting from Blair Atholl Primary School, Headteacher, Dawn Hunter, said: 'The children and staff of Blair Atholl School can't wait to take part in the bi-annual Atholl Estates Day. The children love seeing what is happening on the Estate which is a huge part of their community. We are grateful that we get to take part in such a fun day that helps children to discover new skills and passions.' Blair Castle in Highland Perthshire Julia also revealed that Atholl Estates was once again collaborating with the British Exploring Society, an organisation which exposes young people to challenges they would never have before encountered. 'Often this can be something as simple as a night in a tent, or being out in the countryside,' she said. 'They usually start at a base camp, and from there, deploy in smaller groups on a couple of overnight trips in quite remote terrain. It's excellent for building resilience and confidence in young people from various backgrounds. We are delighted to have been selected to assist BES with this worthwhile work, and look forward to welcoming them, together with the young people, across the summer.' Further details

Australian cops arrest dozens over LGBTQ dating app-linked assaults
SYDNEY - More than 30 people – mostly male teenagers – have been arrested over a series of attacks on men in Australia who were lured over LGBTQ dating apps like Grindr, police said May 9. Videos of some attacks were posted to social media accounts, Victoria state police said. Several different groups of alleged offenders were involved. The suspects, most aged from 13 to 20, were accused of contacting victims on dating apps or social media, then assaulting, robbing and threatening them, as well as making homophobic insults. 'It's mainly occurring on Grindr but also Scruff and Snapchat,' a police spokesperson said. Among the more than 30 arrests made since October 2024, police detained three boys aged 13, 14, and 15 for alleged armed robbery, violent disorder and false imprisonment. 'There is absolutely no place for this type of concerning behaviour in our society. It will not be tolerated,' Victoria police acting superintendent Carolyn Deer said in a statement. 'We know this has been a distressing situation for the victims involved – and these arrests show just how serious we are in holding offenders to account,' Ms Deer said. She added that police were 'committed to the safety and wellbeing of LGBTIQA+ communities'. Police said they were working with dating app providers as part of the investigation, seeking to provide users with safety messaging, reporting options and details of support services. LGBTQI+ community warned after more than 30 people charged in string of dating app attacks in Victoria
Police have urged members of the LGBTQI + community to be vigilant following a string of attacks on men using dating apps and social media. The series of attacks in Victoria involved men being lured to meet with the alleged offenders and then allegedly robbed, threatened and subjected to homophobic comments, the state's police said. Other victims were allegedly filmed, with the videos posted online to social media accounts. 'There is absolutely no place for this type of concerning behaviour in our society. It will not be tolerated,' Acting Superintendent Carolyn Deer said. 'Everyone has a right to go about their lives, meet new people and start a relationship in safety.' Police said more than 30 arrests have been made since October last year, some allegedly acting in groups, with charges ranging from armed robbery, to kidnapping and false imprisonment. The alleged offenders were mostly young males aged between the ages of 13 and 20, police said. 'We know this has been a distressing situation for the victims involved — and these arrests show just how serious we are in holding offenders to account,' Deer said. 'As when using any app or social media platform, please always remain vigilant by protecting your identity and location and verifying the other person's identity before meeting up. ' Victoria Police is committed to the safety and wellbeing of LGBTIQA+ communities, and we take any report of this behaviour extremely seriously and investigate.' Dating app users are warned that reporting incidents to the app does not mean it will automatically be reported to police. Police can request information from dating apps to help solve investigations and conduct criminal investigations, even if one user has blocked or deleted someone from the app. 'Police are continuing to work with selected dating apps as part of the investigation, including to publish proactive safety messaging on the platforms with reporting options and support services,' they said. In an emergency, call 000.

Generate Key Takeaways A new gas station is planned to open in Fairborn, but some in the area are worried it will increase traffic. 'The citizens of Fairborn, once this is in, they are going to be so mad,' Charlie Deer said. [DOWNLOAD: Free WHIO-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] Deer's front yard is only 50 feet from the entrance to the Wawa, which will be at 1800 N Broad Street. He says they don't need any more traffic. 'I see people coming through here at least 50 miles an hour, but most of them are going 60,' Deer said. TRENDING STORIES: Deer shared his concerns with the Fairborn City Council on Monday. The new Wawa got approval despite Deer speaking to the council. A Wawa employee cited a traffic study during the meeting that was approved by ODOT, saying the road could handle the increase in traffic. 'We don't really have any influence to make ODOT say yes or no to much of anything and my life would be easier if we did,' a Wawa employee said to News Center 7. The Wawa site is more than 9 acres and will have 8 double sided fuel pumps and 7 diesel pumps. The gas station is going to be 24/7, and Deer had concerns about that as well. 'Every time something goes bump in the night, she don't have to worry about it. Some kind of crack addict or somebody, you know, trying to get into her house,' Deer said. The Wawa employee told the council that they don't offer overnight amenities, like showers, so truckers will use other gas stations if they need to stay through the night. Deer says he's lived in Fairborn for more than 50 years. Now, he is thinking about making some changes. 'Oh yeah, my wife wants to move,' Deer said. The vote passed 6-1. The next step is to clear out the trees from the lot to make room for construction to start. [SIGN UP: WHIO-TV Daily Headlines Newsletter]
