Lap the Lough: Hundreds turn out for fundraiser in aid of sick children at popular Cork amenity

A fundraiser in aid of sick children saw thousands of coins lined up around the Lough in Cork city during what was a fun day out for the whole family. People flocked to the Lough to help line the popular amenity with coins in a bid to 'Lap the Lough' and raise money for Cork City Hospitals' Children's Club. The charity makes dreams come true for young patients by organising once-in-a-lifetime adventures, sending sick children on trips to Disneyland Paris, and for Santa visits each Christmas. People were encouraged to break into their piggy banks ahead of the unique charity fundraiser to help line the whole Lough with coins and the people of Cork rallied together to make it happen. Not only was a full circle of coins created, but there were sections of two and three layers of coins, thanks to those who came out to support the event which had been organised by former lord mayor Mick Finn, entrepreneur Ernest Cantillon, singer-songwriter Pat Fitzgibbon, chairperson of Cork City Hospitals' Children's Club John Looney, and Eimear McCarthy and Emer O'Mahony. 'It was phenomenal. It was 10 times more than what we ever expected it to be,' he said. 'We started ourselves at about 10am, laying the money that people donated online, so we had nearly €7,500 before we started this morning. We got about three-quarters of the way around the Lough, and then the public took over when they came. The Lap the Lough event saw children and their families place coins all the way around the Lough in Cork City in aid of Cork City Hospitals' Children's Club. Picture: Noel Sweeney. 'They came in throngs and droves. The amount of money they brought was just unbelievable, and they finished off the circle.' Mr Looney thanked everyone who was involved in making the event a success, including volunteers from the Cork City Hospitals' Children's Club and The Lough Scouts, The Lough Credit Union, the gardaí who were present on the day, facepainters and entertainers, LuLus Café and Supervalu who collected coins for the event, The Hawthorn Bar who allowed use of their toilets on the day, and all who were involved. 'We completed the lap much faster than we thought we would. People just came out of nowhere, and suddenly at 11.30am we were halfway around. At stages, we had double and triple layers of coins, so it was very satisfying, a great buzz,' he said. The coins will be counted over the coming days, and the final amount raised for Cork City Hospitals' Children's Club will be revealed. When asked if they would hold the event again after its inaugural success, Mr Cantillon said they would soon start planning for next year, and Mr Looney said he hopes it will be an annual event and one of their main fundraising events going forward.

St Brendan's College Killarney win national pitch and putt title for fourth year in a row

The trio produced a combined score of seven under par comprising 11 under for Brian, three under for Nathan and seven over for Ronan for a total of 317. That was three ahead of another famous GAA nursery, St Kierans College in Kilkenny, while St Francis College, Rochestown were third on countback. The Sem have won this event every year since it resumed in 2022 with three different teams in those four years as the win puts them at the top of the roll of honour for the event ahead of Davis College Mallow with three wins. Completing the day for the Killarney school was the fact their other two teams that qualified for the national finals finished in the Top 12. Meanwhile, Tuesday of last week last saw the Tim Scannell Memorial Inter-Club Matchplay final take place in Tralee between the club's 1 and 2 named sides. Tralee 2 were dominant, winning the first six games of the nine game match between doubles and singles play. In the Doubles Mike Conway & Pa Byrne defeated Eamon Sheehy & Mark Lucey 4&3 with Darren Goodall & Michael Creagh defeating Reece Sugrue & Mark O'Regan 2&1. The remaining doubles match between Roger Guthrie & Alan O'Connor against Gavin Carroll & Charlotte Blake went to the last hole which Roger & Alan won 1up. Wins for Pa Byrne (2&1), Darren Goodall (2&1) and Mike Conway (1up) over Charlotte Blake, David Hobbert and Gavin Carroll confirmed Tralee 2 as official winners of the final as the game between Michael Creagh and Reece Sugrue was deemed a draw when level after 18 holes. Tralee 1 prevented further defeats for themselves in the final two Singles games as Eamon Sheehy beat Tony Blake 2&1 and Jason Cregan recorded a 4&3 victory over Roger Guthrie for a final scoreline of 6.5-2.5. The Tralee 2 win ended on a slightly sombre note with the death of Jason O'Regan's father John 'Chizzy' from Marian Park in Tralee. The National Matchplay takes place this weekend in Offaly. Twenty-one Kerry players will take place in four of the five events across the three days. Both players share 10 titles overall between them (seven for Murphy) as the tone for the weekend will be very much set by this match. The Intermediate Men's event features an all Kerry round 1 match between Tralee's Roger Guthrie and Deerpark's Connie O'Sullivan Jnr. Deerpark's Damien Fleming is top scorer at Kerry qualifiers for Munster Matchplay finals

Tralee's Jason Cregan is automatic for the Senior event as defending champion, as he chases three-in-a-row overall with the player he beat in last year's all Kerry decider, Deerpark's Damien Fleming, topping the scoresheet on Sunday with a total of 15 under par. Claiming the other four senior spots where Tralee club-mates Michael Conway and Jason O'Regan, who both had 12 under, County Senior Matchplay runner-up Darren Goodall finished on nine under par, and Gavin Carroll on three under. In the Intermediate grade, Mark O'Regan's total of five under would have been good enough to join his father in the senior ranks. Bobby McCarron's four under par was also a good enough senior score on the day in securing the second Intermediate spot, as O'Regan and McCarron join County Intermediate Matchplay winner Mark Lucey (Tralee) in the finals. The Junior grade saw five over par as the leading score with Paddy Murphy of Deerpark and Reece Sugrue of Tralee attaining that total. Noel Lee claimed the other spot with seven over as these three join County Junior Matchplay winner Mark O'Shea in the Munster finals draw. These finals will be played in Douglas in Cork on the weekend of May 10 and 11. There is a slight lull in the calendar until after the May weekend as Castleisland announced last weekend the decision to postpone their Scratch Cup events scheduled for the May Bank Holiday Monday until a later date pending approval from Pitch & Putt Ireland.
