Former Florida football players Shemar James, Trikweze Bridges sign NFL rookie contracts

Former Florida football players Shemar James, Trikweze Bridges sign NFL rookie contracts Former Florida football linebacker Shemar James and defensive back Trikweze Bridges have signed rookie contracts after being selected in the 2025 NFL draft. James was selected in the fifth round (No. 152 overall) by the Dallas Cowboys. He has signed a four-year rookie deal worth $4.62 million, including a $423,436 signing bonus, per Aaron Wilson of KPRC. A reliable presence at inside linebacker over three seasons with the Gators, James finished with 64 total tackles, two sacks and an interception last season. He earned SEC Defensive Player of the Week honors after dominating the LSU Tigers with a season-high 11 tackles, two sacks and an interception. The Mobile, Alabama, native ended his college career with 166 tackles, five sacks, two forced fumbles and a reputation as one of the SEC's most instinctive defenders. Bridges was selected by the Los Angeles Chargers in the seventh round (No. 256 overall) and has also signed a four-year rookie contract, the team announced. While financial details were not disclosed, his deal is expected to be worth around $4.3 million. A transfer from Oregon, Bridges quickly established himself as a leader in Florida's secondary last season, starting the final seven games and leading the team in tackles (70). He added two interceptions, six pass breakups and two forced fumbles in his lone season in Gainesville. With multiple former Gators signing professional contracts, head coach Billy Napier and his staff continue to prove they can prepare talent for the next level. Five things to watch for in Week 6 of the 2025 UFL season

The St. Louis Battlehawks have work to do. Head coach Anthony Becht said at the start of the year that he believed the Battlehawks built a roster that could win the 2025 UFL Championship Game, which takes place on June 14 in front of his team's hometown fans in St. Louis. [MORE: What is the UFL? Everything to know about the 2025 United Football League] If the playoffs started today, however, the Battlehawks would miss out and be watching from home. "We've got a huge game next week against a divisional opponent," Becht said. "And I'm just asking everyone to bring a friend." The contest Becht is referring to is the opening game of Week 6, with the Battlehawks hosting the Arlington Renegades in an all-important XFL Conference tilt on Friday night (8 p.m. ET on FOX and the FOX Sports app). It's a crucial matchup, with both teams sitting at 3-2 on the season and fighting for the second playoff spot in the division. The Renegades won the previous head-to-head matchup earlier this year, a 30-15 victory in Arlington in Week 4. Elsewhere, the Memphis Showboats (1-4) travel to face the Houston Roughnecks (2-3) on Saturday (noon ET). Closing out the week, the Michigan Panthers (3-2) host the DC Defenders (4-1) at Ford Field on Sunday (noon ET), followed by the San Antonio Brahmas (1-4) traveling to face the Birmingham Stallions (3-2) at Protective Stadium (4 p.m. ET on FOX and the FOX Sports app). Here's a closer look at five things to watch for in Week 6: One of the main reasons for Arlington's continued success on defense this season is Harris' sharp play. The USC product and Los Angeles native just earned UFL Defensive Player of the Week honors for the second consecutive week, finishing with two picks and six combined tackles in a late-game loss to the Defenders last week. Through five weeks, Harris leads the league in interceptions (three), pass breakups (11) and forced fumbles (two). "He's continually coming up with big plays," head coach Bob Stoops said about Harris. "And he plays multiple positions … so he understands all the positions. He's really a bright player, on top of being a skilled player." One of the top runners in spring football, Memphis brought Hills back to shore up the team's depth at running back. Williams finished with 277 rushing yards and five touchdowns in eight games for the Panthers in 2024. The year prior, Hills led the legacy USFL in rushing with 679 yards and 10 touchdowns while playing for current Memphis offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone as a part of the now defunct New Orleans Breakers organization. The Showboats also activated receiver Daewood Davis from IR. An All-UFL selection in 2024 who finished with 41 receptions for 446 receiving yards and five touchdowns, Davis signed with the NFL's Carolina Panthers after the 2024 UFL season but was released due to injury. The Renegades also executed a trade this week, sending linebacker Storey Jackson to the Brahmas for defensive end Ikenna Enechukwu. Kellen Mond could be holding a clipboard for the Brahmas when they travel to Birmingham this weekend. An ineffective Mond was replaced in the second half by Jarrett Guarantano in San Antonio's home-opening loss to the Roughnecks in Week 5. However, Brahmas head coach Payton Pardee indicated that the quarterback switch could be permanent, as he declined to name a starter for this weekend's game. "I believe in all three quarterbacks we have," Pardee said. "I think they're all very talented. They all have unique skill sets, so I feel very confident in the players that we have in that room, but that's going to be something that we evaluate this week in practice." In five starts, Mond has completed 56.8% of his passes for 597 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Guarantano finished 6-of-15 for 29 yards in his first action of the season last week. Houston defeated Memphis by one point, 18-17, on the road in Week 3 — the team's first victory of the season at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium. This week, the Showboats get a shot at revenge when they travel to face the Roughnecks in Houston. Starting for the first time this season, Memphis QB Dresser Winn earned Offensive Player of the Week honors for Week 5, completing 17 of his 29 passes for 235 yards and a touchdown in a 24-20 overtime win over Birmingham. Winn gets an opportunity to see if he can play efficient football for a second straight week against a Houston defense holding opponents to 14.3 points per game over the past three weeks, with the Roughnecks winning two of those. On the other side, Houston QB Jalan McClendon continues to play solid football. Since taking over as the team's starter, he has completed 70% of his passes for 407 yards, with no touchdowns and two interceptions. McClendon has also rushed for 34 yards and a score. The UFL announced this week that it handed down a one-game suspension without pay to Nacua after a video emerged showing him striking a Battlehawks fan in an altercation after the Panthers' Week 5 road game in St. Louis. Nacua, who agreed to participate in community service, will miss this weekend's away game against the Defenders. Nacua is the older brother of Los Angeles Rams receiver Puka Nacua. His other brother, Kai Nacua, plays in the UFL as a safety for Michigan. Eric D. Dolphins reach out to Douglas, other unsigned veterans. A look at options for Miami

Dolphins general manager Chris Grier reiterated Saturday that the Dolphins will be active in veteran free agency after the draft. Miami could begin adding players as early as this coming week; free agents no longer count toward the compensatory draft formula beginning Monday. The top priority is cornerback, where Miami has only two proven starting-caliber players: disgruntled Jalen Ramsey (who the team is trying to trade) and Kader Kohou. Cam Smith, Artie Burns and Storm Duck likely would be corners three through five if the season regrettably started today (and two through four without Ramsey). The Dolphins also need another defensive lineman to complement Zach Sieler, rookie first-rounder Kenneth Grant and Benito Jones. There are very few good options, with Minnesota's Jonathan Bullard (a 17-game starter last season) and former Dolphins player Raekwon Davis the best of the bunch of unsigned defensive linemen. The Dolphins could use another edge player behind Jaelan Phillips, Bradley Chubb, Chop Robinson and Cam Goode. Options there include 2024 Dolphins starter Emmanuel Ogbah and veteran Za'Darius Smith. But cornerback is clearly the top need. A look at veterans who remain unsigned: ▪ Rasul Douglas: The Dolphins have been in contact with Douglas, who started 15 games for the Bills last season, and have been showing some interest. He has had a good career, with 19 interceptions and 80 starts over nine seasons. Douglas, 30, started 15 games for Bills but allowed 72 percent of passes thrown in his area to be caught, with a poor 122 passer rating against. But he was very good in 2023 for Buffalo, producing five interceptions, three fumble recoveries, one sack, and a career-high two touchdowns in 16 games and 15 starts, despite playing part of the season with a torn mCL. Pro Football Focus rated him 12th among all cornerbacks that season. The 6-2 Douglas, who twice has been named Defensive Player of the Week (in each conference), had some good years, too, for Philadelphia, Carolina and Green Bay, and has three interception returns for touchdowns. ▪ Asante Samuel Jr.: The former Chargers second-round pick out of Ft. Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas, Samuel had no interceptions but 37 passes defended in 50 games and 47 starts in his four years with the Chargers. Samuel, 25, missed 13 games last season due to a shoulder injury and allowed 12 of 18 passes to be caught for 128 yards. According to the NFL, he's representing himself in contract talks. ▪ James Bradberry: A second-team All Pro in 2022, Bradberry missed last season's Eagles Super Bowl season because of a torn Achilles sustained in a late August practice. He had 19 interceptions and 112 passes defended in eight seasons. He recently visited the Bills, and there was initial contact between the Dolphins and Bradberry's camp a few weeks ago, but it's unclear if Miami will pursue him. ▪ Mike Hilton: The Bengals' skilled 5-9 nickel corner made 10 starts for the Bengals and had a 92 passer rating against). He was linked to Miami early in free agency. If the Dolphins sign Hilton as their top nickel corner, Kohou likely would play on the boundary instead of nickel corner. ▪ Stephon Gilmore: He made 15 starts for Minnesota, at age 34, and had a 94.1 passer rating against. He's past his prime but still a decent player. ▪ CJ Henderson: The former ninth overall pick played in 12 games and started seven for Carolina and had a 106.8 passer rating against. It would be difficult to project him as a starter. ▪ Jack Jones: His career started promisingly as a fourth-round pick of New England in 2022, but he struggled with the Raiders, allowing 10 touchdown receptions that overshadowing his three interceptions last season. He also permitted a 115.8 passer rating in his coverage area allowed 11 completions of 20 plus yards, and the Raiders released him April 6. He had five picks in 24 games with the Raiders, who signed him after New England cut him during the 2023 season more than a week after he missed curfew before a game. He had two interceptions for New England in both 2022 and 2023. ▪ Shaq Griffin: The 29-year-old had two interceptions in 17 games and three starts for the Vikings last season, equal to a very good 76.2 passer rating in his coverage area. Perhaps he would thrive in a larger role. ▪ Emmanuel Moseley: He missed most of last season for the Lions with a torn pectoral muscle. He was limited to three games for Detroit over the past two seasons. Before that, he spent his first five seasons with San Francisco and had five interceptions and 33 starts. ▪ Others: Former Dolphins Pro Bowler Xavien Howard, who likely would consider a return if approach. He was out of the league last season... Daryl Worley, who made seven starts for Tennessee and had a poor 125.6 passer rating against)... Jalen Mills, a former cornerback who played a lot of safety last year and allowed a 51.8 passer rating against in eight starts for the Jets... Cam Sutton, who was suspended eight games last season for a domestic violence incident) and Fabian Moreau, who has 56 NFL starts and seven interceptions in eight seasons. The Dolphins no longer need a guard after trading up in the second round to draft Arizona's Jonah Savaiinaea, who they project as an immediate starter. But with James Daniels coming off a torn Achilles, here's who's left if the Dolphins want insurance beyond Liam Eichenberg: ▪ Brandon Scherff: The former first-rounder is still an effective player at 33. He started 17 games for the Jaguars last season, and PFF rated him 37th of 77 guards. Incumbent starter Liam Eichenberg was ranked 69th. ▪ Dalton Risner: On his weekly segment on the local Fox affiliate, Drew Rosenhaus mentioned his name when asked about the Dolphins' guard search. But Risner did not mention Miami among teams on his radar during a recent interview. He spent the first two months on injured reserve but started eight games for the Vikings and played well; PFF rated him 22nd among 77 guards. ▪ Shaq Mason: PFF rated him 47th among 77 guards. But he tied for the league lead in sacks allowed by a guard last season with eight. His run blocking was much better in his 15 starts for Houston. ▪ Will Hernandez: A four-year starter for the Cardinals who played only five games last season because of a knee injury. He's functional when healthy. ▪ Other free agents of note: The Dolphins' Isaiah Wynn (limited to 13 games in two years in Miami because of injury), Cody Whitehair (121 career starts, including three for the Raiders last year) and Mark Glowinski (101 starts in 10 years).
