Guided by her brothers, Pat Del Pilar aspires to one day lead JRU to the top

By BEA MICALLER,GMA Integrated News Pat Del Pilar first discovered her love of volleyball through encouragement from her two brothers, Rafael and Nathaniel. She now uses that as fuel in her bid to bring Jose Rizal University volleyball back to relevance in the NCAA. "Ito na po 'yung first love ko kasi nga na-encourage ako ng mga kuya ko. Sabi ko na gusto ko rin mag-volleyball, gusto ko rin ma-feel 'yung nafi-feel nila inside the court," Del Pilar told GMA News Online on Tuesday. Rafael and Nathaniel are like heroes for the 5-foot-11 Del Pilar. Rafael was a member of De La Salle University and suited up back in UAAP Season 79. Nathaniel followed suit as he's part of the current Green Archers, who reached the Final Four of the recently-concluded UAAP Season 87. Like the youngest Del Pilar, Rafael and Nathaniel are also middle blockers. "In-encourage po nila ako na maglaro kasi syempre I have the height din po. Pito po kaming magkakapatid and bunso po ako. 'Yung dalawang kuya ko lang po 'yung naglalaro," Del Pilar added. "Una po basketball po talaga sila tapos ayon po nakita sila ng coaches ng volleyball kaya ni-recruit sila hanggang sa tinuloy-tuloy po nila." Only a sophomore, Del Pilar is now among the leaders for the Lady Bombers, emerging as their second leading scorer in the ongoing NCAA Season 100 women's volleyball tournament. And someday, she hopes to see JRU seeing action in the Final Four. "Gusto ko rin po talaga ma-achieve na mag-Final Four kami dito sa JRU or Finals at kung papalarin mag-champion," the 22-year-old middle blocker said. —JMB, GMA Integrated News

JRU erases nine-point deficit in Set 3 to reassert dominance vs. San Beda

By BEA MICALLER,GMA Integrated News No payback this time as Jose Rizal University repeated over San Beda University, 25-19, 25-22, 25-21, to clinch its first win in the second round — and their second overall — in NCAA Season 100 women's volleyball on Tuesday at the FilOil EcoOil Centre. The Lady Bombers crawled their way back from nine points down in the third set to complete the sweep and reassert mastery over the Lady Red Spikers, the same team they beat in their one-win outing in the first round. To do so, JRU rode the heroics of lefty spiker Nicole Deala and the towering tandem of Patricia Del Pilar and Kring Batara. Deala led the sweep win with an all-around outing of 15 points anchored on 13 attacks and two aces laced with 11 digs and four receptions. Del Pilar churned out 13 markers highlighted by four blocks while Batara chipped in 11 points. With the win, the Heavy Bombers improved to 2-14 while San Bed slipped to an identical 2-14 card. The two teams, however, are already out of contention and are just fighting for pride at this point. That exactly what transpired for the wards of JRU head coach Mia Tioseco, who erased a 4-13 deficit in the third set to flip the switch and bag their second win of the season. Del Pilar unleashed a quicker before denying Angel Habacon to cut the gap to three, 12-15. But Janelle Bachar rsponded from the opposite side to bring the embattled San Beda to a 16-12 cushion before the second technical timeout. That breather changed the momentum as JRU suddenly went on a 4-0 run to tie things up at 16-all. San Beda regained a slim 18-17 cushion, but JRU once again retaliated with Del Pilar going for the quick hammer to give her side a 20-18 lead. Deala then took off for a powerful spike that caught the scrambling San Beda defense off guard, giving JRU a 23-19 cushion before another attack from her sent the Lady Bombers to the match point. San Beda still made some fightback with two straight points, but Deala finished it off from the left side to seal JRU's sweep win. Habacon paced San Beda with 14 points while Bachar chipped in 12 markers. "Super happy po kami ngayon. Mas naging motivated lang po kami manalo ngayong game and mas nag-enjoy kami ngayon," the 5-foot-11 Del Pilar told GMA News Online. "Sila rin po kasi natalo namin last time so 'yun po 'yung naging motivation na rin namin ngayong game na dapat 'di sila makabawi ngayon." —JMB, GMA Integrated News

Baja California governor Marina Del Pilar, her husband's visas revoked by Trump administration; Here's why

The Governor of Baja California, a state bordering Mexico, stated that the United States has cancelled her and her husband's visas. On Saturday night, Governor Marina Del Pilar posted on her official Facebook and X accounts that her husband's visa was revoked first and that '…shortly after the consular measure was applied, I received a similar notification.' Del Pilar and her spouse both belong to the Morena party, which is in power. Del Pilar did not specify whether she was given an explanation for the revocation, but added that 'this situation is taking place in a complex binational context that requires my composure and prudence.' 'I inform all citizens of Baja California that this situation is taking place in a complex binational context that requires my composure and prudence. I've said it repeatedly: governing my state is a source of pride, and I will continue to do so with my heart in mind and a clear conscience. My government will continue working tirelessly to address the challenges we face for the benefit of the people of Baja California,' she wrote. Carlos Torres Torres, Del Pilar's spouse, works for the city of Tijuana and the state government of Baja California as a coordinator of special projects. In a Facebook post, he claimed that US consular officers informed him of the withdrawal of his US visa. 'I was notified by US Consular Authorities about the revocation of my non-immigrant visa, a measure that, as is with many people in similar contexts, responds to internal arrangements of the State Department. It should be noted that my conscience is calm and I am sure that the situation will be resolved favorably.' Also Read: Steve Witkoff makes bombshell statement ahead of Edan Alexander's release; 'We want to bring hostages home, but…' The Trump administration has been sending out signals in recent weeks stating that US visas and permanent residency cards can be revoked. This comes as hundreds of overseas students had their visas suspended for a few days before being restored by a number of court decisions. Baja California, which is adjacent to California, has the most pedestrian crossings among all the Mexican states bordering the US. Before her announcement, Gustavo Petro, the President of Colombia, said that the US government had cancelled his visa before his meetings with the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. Tensions between the United States and Mexico have increased due to fentanyl trafficking, migration, and tariffs. According to The Wall Street Journal, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum reportedly turned down Trump's proposal to send American troops to fight the drug gangs who produce and smuggle fentanyl into the US.

He announced the revocation of his U.S. visa on Friday, saying that U.S. consular officials advised him about it, and he said that the measure '…corresponds to internal provisions of the (U.S.) State Department.' He also said that the measure '…does not constitute an accusation, investigation, or formal accusation by any authority, either in Mexico or in the United States.' In recent weeks, the Trump administration has been issuing messages saying U.S. visas and permanent resident cards can be revoked, and it comes as hundreds of international students found their visas revoked for several days until several court rulings began restoring them. Tijuana shelters see funding, US donations dry up Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on April 30 a 'one-strike' policy for all temporary visa holders in a document titled '100 Days of an America First State Department.' In that document, Rubio states, 'There is now a one-strike policy: Catch-And-Revoke. Whenever the government catches non-U.S. citizens breaking our laws, we will take action to revoke their status. The time of contemptuously taking advantage of our nation's generosity ends.' Governor Del Pilar was in San Diego in late April for an event promoting tourism in Mexico. That event was part of Mexico's Tianguis Turístico, an annual conference for tourism professionals that was hosted this year in Baja California. The event was held in two countries for the first time, and at the special event in San Diego were officials from both sides of the border, including the Consul General for the U.S. Consulate in Tijuana, Christopher Teal. FOX 5/KUSI called the U.S. Consulate in Tijuana, but a recording said that the office was closed and nobody answered. Del Pilar said in her Saturday social media post that she and her husband are '…certain and fully confident that the situation will be clarified to the satisfaction of both of us.'
