Jack in the Box promotes permanent CFO
This story was originally published on Restaurant Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Restaurant Dive newsletter. Jack in the Box has promoted Dawn Hooper to chief financial officer, the company announced Thursday. Hooper served as the company's interim principal financial officer since October 2024, and filled that role for two other periods between 2020 and 2021 and again in 2023, according to a press release. Lance Tucker, who was promoted to CEO earlier this year, was the previous CFO. Jack in the Box has struggled in recent quarters with frequent same-store sales declines at the burger brand and at sister chain Del Taco. These performance problems are pushing the chain to accelerate the closure of underperforming stores and to contemplate a sale of Del Taco. Given the sales declines facing Jack in the Box, Hooper will have to deal with significant challenges as permanent CFO. When Tucker was promoted to CEO earlier this year, he said the chain had to make capital allocation, cash flow acceleration and refranchising stores its fiscal priorities. Hooper, who has been with Jack in the Box for 25 years, said in a statement that the company was at a pivotal moment, but that it had strong fundamentals. 'My focus will be on improving long-term financial performance, streamlining our business model, and positioning the company for sustainable growth in the years ahead,' Hooper said. Tucker, in the same press release, expressed his confidence in Hooper. 'I've had the privilege of working with her throughout my tenure at the Company, including during my time as CFO from 2018 to 2020, when her guidance and partnership were invaluable. She has been instrumental in supporting the company through periods of transformation,' Tucker said. In response to the sales challenges, Jack in the Box announced a 'Jack on Track' turnaround initiative, which includes a reduction in spending on new company-owned units and a greater investment in tech and digital engagement, including the installation of ordering kiosks at 1,500 restaurants. Jack in the Box has also tried to keep abreast of QSR value trends, with offerings like its Munchies Under $4 program and its Nashville Hot Chicken LTO. Del Taco has followed in Taco Bell's footsteps on value in recent months, with new combo boxes. Jack in the Box did manage to grow its same-store sales by 0.4% in fiscal Q1, which ended on January 19, though Del Taco's sales also fell. Despite anemic sales growth and occasional drops in same-store sales, Jack in the Box has continued signing new franchise agreements that would bring its brand to new markets. Longtime fast-food chain closes all Kansas City area locations
A few months after closing multiple KC area locations, Jack in the Box appears to have exited the area completely. Its last remaining stores — 9101 Johnson Drive in Mission, 10137 Metcalf Ave. in Overland Park and 10630 Parallel Parkway in Kansas City, Kansas — have all closed. The company's website still lists a location as 'coming soon' at 740 NW Shoal Creek Parkway. Jack in the Box did not respond to The Star's request for comment Tuesday to say whether or not that location would open. Signs on the doors and windows of the Mission restaurant read: 'Thank you, Kansas City, for your support over the years. We've truly appreciated being part of the community.' The California-based chain has experienced financial hardship in the past few months. In April, after the KC area locations closed, the company announced that it would close 150-200 under-performing stores in an effort to save the brand. The company called the initiative the 'JACK on Track' plan, saying it seeks to run an 'asset-light business model.' In the company statement, Jack in the Box said it was 'exploring strategic alternatives' for Del Taco, a fast-food brand it acquired in 2022. Del Taco has shuttered more than a dozen locations across Colorado. 2 restaurant chains look to open locations in Dayton area
DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — Two popular fast-food chains are looking to enter the Dayton area to open numerous locations. Dustin Thompson, director of Franchise Marketing and Development for Del Taco and Jack in the Box, told that both chains are looking to grow across the country, including the Dayton area. Del Taco, a Mexican quick service chain open late-nights, is looking at roughly 10 sites for the region. Jack in the Box, a business with locations open 24 hours, wants roughly 15 locations, according to Thompson. While Del Taco is known for its fresh ingredients, Jack in the Box is recognized for its all-day breakfast, Tiny Tacos and more. Thompson said factors like population and access to interstates are among the factors both companies look at when determining potential regions to expand to. Both chains already have locations in the Buckeye state. Three Del Taco locations operate in the Columbus area, and Jack in the Box operates a location in West Chester and another near Cincinnati's Oakley neighborhood. No potential franchisees have been identified by the companies as of date for the Dayton area. Beloved Fast Food Chain Makes Telling Move After Closing Hundreds of Locations
Last month, beloved West Coast fast food chain Jack in the Box announced that it would be closing hundreds of locations around the country, but the chain made a telling move that highlights the chain's long-term plans. Back in April, Jack in the Box announced plans to close about 150 or 200 of its "underperforming restaurants" across the country. "Jack in the Box will implement a block closure program, which is projected to result in the closure of approximately 150-200 underperforming restaurants — a majority of which have been in the system for over three decades," the company wrote in a press release on April 23, 2025. "The program will consist of approximately 80-120 restaurant closures between now and 12/31/2025, with the remaining underperforming restaurants closing thereafter based upon respective franchise agreement termination dates," the restaurant chain's press release continued. While closures of this magnitude and scale don't often paint an optimistic picture for businesses going forward, it seems like Jack in the Box is not merely closing locations, but it is also planning expansion. According to a report from Bob Vitale of The Columbus Dispatch, Jack in the Box is planning expansion throughout Ohio. "The company that owns the 74-year-old restaurant chain already has come to Powell and Whitehall with its other brand, Del Taco. A Jack in the Box representative told The Dispatch that it's seeking new locations for both, though, in the Columbus, Cincinnati, Cleveland and Dayton areas," Vitale wrote for The Columbus Dispatch this week. This is a telling move from the fast food chain as it indicates that despite the recent plans to close hundreds of locations, the chain still has expansion plans, which will be good news for its fans and customers.
