Freeport police recover 9mm handgun after suspect hides in Buick
FREEPORT, Ill. (WTVO) — Police in Freeport arrested a man they say opened fire on a vehicle after engaging in a verbal argument with the occupant.
According to the Freeport Police Department, Demetrius Henry, 41, was found hiding in the back seat of a Buick that was parked in the 1200 block of S. Carroll after officers responded to an alert from the city's Sound Thinking gunshot detection system.
Investigators said Henry, who lives in University Park, and the occupant of a white SUV were engaged in a 'verbal altercation' both before and after the shot was fired.
A 9mm handgun was found in the back seat of the Buick during a search of the vehicle.
Henry has been charged with unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, reckless discharge of a firearm, and aggravated discharge of a firearm.
He was booked into the Stephenson County jail pending the outcome of a pretrial detention hearing.
