Doechii Calls Out Trump's 'Ruthless Attacks' Amid L.A. Protests in BET Speech: 'What Type of Government Is That?'
Doechii took home the title of best female hip hop artist at the 2025 BET Awards, and she used her acceptance speech to shed light on the ongoing protests against unlawful immigration raids in Los Angeles. The 'Alter Ego' rapper noted that it was her first time attending the awards ceremony and showed love toward her fellow nominees before noting that 'as much as I'm honored by this award, I do want to address what's happening right now outside of the building.' 'Trump is using military forces to stop a protest, and I want y'all to consider what kind of government it appears to be when every time we exercise our democratic right to protest, the military is deployed against us.' 'What type of government is that?' Doechii questioned on stage at the 25th BET Awards. On Sunday, a BET spokesperson confirmed that the ceremony would go ahead as planned despite the protests. A wave of immigration raids in L.A. sparked last week, which led to clashes between protestors and law enforcement across the county. On Sunday, residents gathered around City Hall and the federal courthouse, bringing a freeway to a stop in protest of President Donald Trump's move to deploy the state's National Guard. California Gov. Gavin Newsom formally requested that the Trump Administration 'rescind their unlawful deployment of troops in Los Angeles County and return them to my command.' 'People are being swept up and torn from their families, and I feel it's my responsibility as an artist to use this moment to speak up for all oppressed people: For Black people, for Latino people, for trans people, for the people in Gaza,' Doechii added. 'We all deserve to live in hope and not in fear, and I hope we stand together, my brothers and my sisters, against hate and we protest against it. Thank you, BET.' Heading into Monday night, Kendrick Lamar topped the nomination list with 10 nods, with the 'Denial Is A River' rapper, Future, GloRilla, Future and Drake following close behind with six noms each. The 'Yeah Glo!' rapper, too, served as one of the night's performers alongside Lil Wayne, Teyana Taylor, Playboi Carti and Leon Thomas. After She Was Caught On Camera Yelling At Her Staff Ahead Of The Met Gala, Doechii Has Defended The Uncomfortable Video With A Divisive Response
You might be aware by now that ahead of the 2025 Met Gala, artist Doechii was caught on camera yelling at her team for failing to hide her outfit from paparazzi. Doechii made her debut at the Met in a Louis Vuitton short suit designed by Pharrell. While leaving The Mark Hotel to get to the event, Doechii was filmed hastily hiding behind her staff members to avoid being phootgraphed in the lobby. Her team then used a large, white wardrobe screen to wheel her out of the building without being seen — though Doechii wasn't satisfied. Now!' she could be heard yelling. As soon as a staff member placed an umbrella over the top of the square screen, Doechii shouted, 'And another one! I need four fucking umbrellas!' 'Move these umbrellas. I don't want these people fucking seeing me,' she snapped. Doechii's demeanor in the now-viral clip quickly sparked a huge divide. While some people empathized with the star and suggested she was under immense stress, others argued, 'theres literally no reason to talk to people like this,' while accusing her of 'mistreating' her staff. 'God forbid a girl needs more umbrellas,' she quipped with a laughing emoji, before writing in the caption: 'All jokes aside this was such an overstimulating night but I wouldn't trade it for the world! This was the night we all dreamed of and my team killed it (umbrellas aside).' She later added on Instagram that she was "so so so proud" of her glam team, writing in part: "We've been dreaming about this Met for a long time and the theme this year is in such alignment with who I am what stand for." Several fans have been left unimpressed with Doechii's response. 'it's still wrong to treat people like that,' one person commented, while another echoed, 'Nah you don't treat people like that.' 'Her not even taking any accountability is so sad. This is so disappointing,' someone tweeted, while another wrote, 'she couldn't even apologize!!!' 'a janitor deserves the same respect as the ceo. y'all can stop w the whole 'she's the star' bs. she could be the star & simultaneously show her team respect,' one more tweet read. Yikes.
