French teen suspect in deadly stabbing said he wanted to kill 'any' school monitor
A 14-year-old French pupil detained over the killing of a teaching assistant said he had wanted to attack "any" adult school monitor after he was reprimanded for kissing his girlfriend, a prosecutor said Wednesday. "He said he acted in such a manner because he could no longer stand the behaviour of monitors in general," the prosecutor in the northeastern town of Chaumont, Denis Devallois, told reporters after the stabbing on Tuesday. Devallois said the teenager did not appear to suffer from any "mental disorder", but added the self-described fan of "violent video games" appeared "detached" and expressed "no regret" during questioning. "He said there was perhaps a link with the fact he was told off by a monitor on Friday, June 6, as he was kissing his girlfriend on school grounds. He said this monitor was not the one that became a victim on Tuesday." "He stated that he had, as early as the next day, Saturday, mulled over a plan to kill a monitor, in his own words, 'any one of them'," the prosecutor added. "He said that on Tuesday morning after breakfast he grabbed the largest knife in his home to, in his words, 'cause the most damage'".

The 31-year-old victim, who hasn't been identified, was fatally injured on the morning of Tuesday, June 10, outside Françoise Dolto school in Nogent in northeastern France, per The Times, the BBC and French outlet Le Monde. A 14-year-old boy has reportedly been arrested in connection with the incident, The Times reported, citing police. The outlet noted that the victim had been stabbed as police carried out a random search for knives in students' school bags. Per the Associated Press, a police officer helping with the checks has also been slightly injured. The news agency added that fatal attacks in the country were rare, but the Education Ministry had introduced bag checks in some locations this year amid concerns about rising violence in schools. Regional Prosecutor Denis Devallois said the student did not have a police record, the AP stated. The victim was the mother of a young boy and had been working at the school since September, according to France 24, citing one of her cousins, Aurore. "She was a very cheerful, very kind person," Aurore said, per the outlet. French President Emmanuel Macron said the teaching assistant had been a "victim of a senseless wave of violence," in an X post, adding, "The nation is in mourning." The country's Education Minister Élisabeth Borne called the incident "a terrible tragedy" on X, writing in a translated post, "I express my full support to the victim and her loved ones." "I salute the composure and commitment of those who acted to restrain the attacker and protect the students and staff," she added. Prime Minister François Bayrou said the stabbing showed "a breakdown of the society in which we live," according to France 24. "This is not just an isolated incident," he said, per the outlet. France 24 noted that a student had killed a girl and injured multiple others in a stabbing in the city of Nantes in April, adding that French government figures released in February stated that reports of bladed weapons in schools had jumped by 15 percent over the past year. Tragic mum, 31, 'stabbed to death by pupil' pictured for first time
A 14-year-old French schoolboy is facing 20 eyars in prison after allegedly stabbing a teaching assistant to death after she asked to search his bag for weapons. A young teaching assistant who was stabbed to death by a teenage pupil in a horror knife attack at a school in France has been pictured for the first time. Known only as Melanie G, the single mum and former hairdresser, was looking for concealed weapons alongside a police officer - in line with national education policy - at the gates of Françoise Dolto secondary school in Nogent-sur-Marne, near Paris when the horror unfolded around 8.30am on Tuesday, reports the Mirror. She had only started the job last year, giving up her career in hairdressing to spend more time with her little boy. French police say the 14-year-old schoolboy was tonight facing 20 years in prison after allegedly stabbing the 31-year-old teaching assistant to death after she asked to search his bag for knives. The incident followed a spate of school knife attacks in France, including one in April, when a teenage girl was stabbed to death and three others were wounded at a school in Nantes, in the west of the country. A source investigating the Nogent attack said: "The boy responsible was uninjured, after stabbing his victim multiple times. He was soon restrained by staff, and then arrested by the police officer present at the bag check." The source added: "One of the arresting officers suffered a slight cut to the hand." Referring to the alleged killer, the source said: "He is now in custody, and facing up to 20 years in prison if found guilty in a youth court of a deliberate killing." Local prosecutor Denis Devallois confirmed that a criminal enquiry had been launched into the killing, and that the perpetrator faced prison. The boy who cannot be named for legal reasons had been arrested twive from the school for disruptive behaviour, and was a student representative in the school's anti-bullying programme, claimed the source. Following today's killing, French President Emmanuel Macron described a "senseless wave of violence" in France. He added: "We all stand with [Melanie G.'s] family, her loved ones, her colleagues and the entire educational community. The nation is in mourning and the government is mobilised to reduce crime." Mélanie G. lived in Sarcey, around seven miles from Nogent, where she also worked as a municipal councillor. Paying tribute, her sister-in-law said: "She was funny, gentle, and very kind, and had one goal – to look after her child. She gave up hairdressing because she wanted more days off to be with him." Last month, France's Education Ministry announced that 958 bag checks in schools had resulted in the seizure of 94 knives across the country.

14-year-old student in France stabs school employee to death during bag check
A French middle school employee was stabbed to death by a 14-year-old student during a bag check Tuesday at their school in eastern France, authorities said. The student was detained. A police officer helping with the bag checks was slightly injured during the arrest by the student, using the same knife he used against the school employee, the gendarme service said. The attack at the Francoise Dolto School in Nogent, north of the Burgundy city of Dijon, was being investigated. 'While she was looking after our children in Nogent, an educational assistant lost her life, a victim of senseless violence,' French President Emmanuel Macron said in a post on X. 'The nation is in mourning and the government mobilized to bring crime down.' Such fatal attacks have been rare in France, but concerns about school violence have been on the rise. The Education Ministry introduced bag checks this year at some schools to reduce it. Over a two-month period this spring, 186 knives were seized during school bag checks and 32 people detained, the interior minister's office said. Regional Prosecutor Denis Devallois said the student was 14 years old and did not have a police record. Education Minister Elisabeth Borne said the boy had been a student representative in the school's anti-bullying program, and had been briefly suspended earlier this year for disrupting class. Police officers were carrying out bag checks just outside the school, and the school employee was standing alongside them when the stabbing occurred at the school entry, the gendarme service said. The school's classes were canceled for the day, and the prosecutor said psychological help was being offered to students and staff. In April, a high school student stabbed four other students at his school in western France, killing one and wounding three others before being arrested, police said. That prompted the prime minister to call for tougher measures against knife violence in schools. © Copyright 2025 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
