Storm leaves more than 9,000 without power in Horry, Georgetown counties
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — Nearly 9,300 Horry Electric Cooperative and Santee Cooper customers are without power after a strong storm moved across the Grand Strand shortly before 7 p.m. The bulk of the Santee Cooper outages are in the Carolina Forest area, according to the utility's online outage map. There are also outages near Litchfield and Pawleys Island in Georgetown County and north of Bucksville in Horry County. The Horry Electric outages are spread across the county. The storm, which generated a brief tornado warning in southeastern Robeson County before trekking toward the Grand Strand, also knocked down some tents in downtown Myrtle Beach, where setup was underway for the Carolina Country Music Fest, which is set for June 5-8. Numerous trees were also reported down across the region. This is a developing story. Count on News13 for updates. * * * Dennis Bright is the Digital Executive Producer at News13. Georgetown County deputies make 28 arrests, write hundreds of tickets during Spring Bike Rally
GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — Georgetown County deputies made 28 arrests and wrote hundreds of tickets during the just-concluded Spring Bike Rally on the Grand Strand. With many of the events during the 10-day event taking place in the Murrells Inlet area, the sheriff's office said deputies conducted 'enhanced traffic enforcement to combat speeding and unsafe driving.' Those efforts resulted in four people being arrested for driving under the influence and two dozen people being arrested on drug charges, the sheriff's office said. Overall, deputies handed out 771 tickets, including 298 for speeding. They also issued 507 warnings. News13 has asked Horry County authorities to provide similar statistics. This year's rally was a deadly one, with authorities reporting at least four deaths in three separate motorcycle-related crashes, including one that happened overnight on Towne Centre Parkway near Breakers Drive in Horry County that killed two people. The others include a crash early Sunday that killed a 40-year-old Laurinburg, North Carolina, woman, who was a passenger on a motorcycle that crashed in the North Myrtle Beach area and one Friday morning that killed a 51-year-old man who police said swerved to miss an animal in the roadway in Conway. * * * Dennis Bright is the Digital Executive Producer at News13.
