This Morning honours Coronation Street legend after tragic death announcement
This Morning honoured Coronation Street legend Philip Lowrie's memory on Wednesday's show, after his tragic death. During their discussion with Sharon Marshall about the latest soap news, hosts Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley allowed her to pay a heartfelt tribute to the late actor. Sharon began by saying: "I wanted to start with a little tribute, if I may, to Phillip Lowrie. I was so privileged to meet and interview him a couple of times over the years." As the original bad boy of Coronation Street, Phillip made his mark as Dennis Tanner from 1960 to 1968. To the delight of fans, he reprised the role from 2011 to 2014. Phillip was an integral part of the soap's history, featuring in its very first episode, reports Wales Online. Sadly, his publicist, Mario Renzullo, confirmed his death on Saturday, stating: "My client and very dear friend, Philip Lowrie, the beloved actor renowned for his role as Dennis Tanner on Coronation Street, passed away yesterday at 88," Mr Renzullo wrote in a statement. "His death marks the end of an era for the world's longest-running soap, where he became a cornerstone of its storytelling." In remembrance of the actor, Sharon disclosed that his legacy has left an indelible mark on the set of Coronation Street. She continued: "I know he was really pleased about this, his name is forever in that set. Etched outside her (Elsie Tanner) window, you can see this if you go on the Coronation Street tour, etched outside her house, which I think Eileen lives there now, it still says Dennis Tanner. Where he's supposed to have etched into it as a kid." When an image of it was displayed on-screen, the two This Morning stars were visibly moved, describing the nod to his character as incredibly special. Sharon elaborated: "That actually pre-dated the programme even setting up! It was said he was supposed to have done it as a little boy. "What I love is Pat Phoenix, her very last scene; you can see it when she goes; the last thing she does is look at that graffiti on the set. "It's always there. A lovely man and a wonderful character, a real heart for Corrie history there." Both This Morning and Coronation Street are available to watch on ITVX.

Philip left the show in the late '60s, but in 2011, he made a triumphant return to Coronation Street, much to the delight of long-time fans. His return, after an absence of over 40 years, was celebrated by viewers, proving that his connection with the show remained strong throughout his life. His return in 2011, alongside his on-screen mother, Elsie Tanner (played by the legendary actress Pat Phoenix), was a true moment of nostalgia. Even though Coronation Street bid farewell to Dennis in 2020, when he was written out of the show, his memory lived on. Coronation Street has been gracing screens for over 60 years, introducing countless beloved characters, many of whom have left a mark on the show. While some actors have gone on to achieve great success in new ventures, others have faced personal challenges or heartbreaking tragedies. Here's a look at what happened to some of the iconic stars after they bid farewell to Weatherfield... Bill Tarmey - Jack Duckworth Bill Tarmey, who played Jack Duckworth for 30 years, passed away in 2012 after leaving the show due to health problems and the tragic diagnosis of his son's brain tumour. His final scene, where Jack passed away in the same chair as his wife Vera, was a heart-wrenching moment for fans. Tarmey's legacy lives on in his beloved character. Liz Dawn - Vera Duckworth Liz Dawn, who portrayed Jack's wife Vera, left Coronation Street in 2008 because of her lung condition. She passed away in 2017 after battling emphysema. Sarah Lancashire - Raquel Watts Sarah was only supposed to be on the soap for three months when she joined in 1991, but she was brought back and ended up staying for half a decade. In 1996, Raquel left her husband, Curly Watts, in tear-jerking scenes, which 20 million people watched while more than 22 million saw their wedding. She's gone on to star in an array of shows, most notably Happy Valley, where she portrayed Sgt Catherine Cawood. Kevin Kennedy - Curly Watts Kevin Kennedy played the legendary Curly Watts for two decades. After leaving the soap in 2003, he launched an addiction recovery charity to help others with addictive and mental health disorders. Kevin set this up after dealing with his own recovery journey from alcohol addiction for 22 years. Bruno Langley - Todd Grimshaw The disgraced actor, who graced the Coronation Street set for 17 years, was given the boot from the iconic ITV show after he sexually harassed two women, grabbing them by their private parts during a drunken spree in Manchester. In court at Manchester Magistrates' Court back in December 2017, Langley admitted to battling alcohol issues and confessed there were times he couldn't recall events the morning after a night of heavy drinking. Dodging a jail sentence, Langley received a 12-month "high-level" community order, was subjected to curfew via an electronic tag, required to register as a sex offender for five years, and ordered to pay £250 in compensation to each of the victims he assaulted. He wept in the dock and later issued an unreserved apology to the women he groped on a night out in The Sunday Mirror. William Roache - Ken Barlow Ken Barlow is the longest remaining resident on the cobbles, having been in the show since its first episode. William Roache entered Wetherfield as a fresh-faced 18-year-old who has been part of some steamy love affairs over the decades. When he was 91 years old, he was awarded an OBE by King Charles III for his services to acting. In fact, he holds the world record for the longest-serving TV actor in a continuous role. Away from work, the actor married Anna Cropper in 1961 and has two children together, Linus and Vanya. William went on to marry Sara McEwan in the late 1970s and had two children with her, Verity James and Edwina, who sadly died at 18 months old. Alan Rothwell as David Barlow Alan portrayed the youngest son of Frank (Frank Pemberton) and Ida Barlow (Noel Dyson), making sporadic appearances on the soap during his tenure. He remained a fixture on the cobbles until 1968 when he departed to start afresh in Australia with his wife Irma Ogden (Sandra Gough). His character met an off-screen demise when viewers were informed of his death in a car crash in 1970. Since then, the 88-year-old has had an illustrious career, even featuring in rival soap Emmerdale. Alan took on three distinct roles in Emmerdale: a judge in 1993, a foster father in 1998, and an elderly gentleman in 2015. Most recently, the actor graced the short film Gods Guilty Conscience, the director's cut in 2021 and made several appearances on BBC's Doctors. Anne Margaret Cunningham as Linda Cheveski Anne portrayed the strong-willed daughter of Elsie Tanner on the cobbles, inheriting her mother's straightforward approach. She briefly left Weatherfield in 1961 to emigrate to Canada, but returned to the UK a year later. Her relationship with her husband was tumultuous, leading to Linda's sporadic appearances on the soap, with her last one in 1984. After leaving the soap, the now 88-year-old continued her acting career, featuring in King of Bollywood, Henry Otter and the Nineteenth Hole. She is married to theatre director Darrol Blake, and they have three children together. The couple are believed to reside in London.

Original Coronation Street star Philip Lowrie dies aged 88
Lowrie, who appeared in the first episode of the soap in 1960 as the original bad body Dennis Tanner, died on Friday, his publicist Mario Renzullo said. 'My client and very dear friend, Philip Lowrie, the beloved actor renowned for his role as Dennis Tanner on Coronation Street, passed away yesterday at 88,' Mr Renzullo's Saturday statement said. William Roache (back row, from left) and Philip Lowrie (Dennis Tanner) towards the end with Coronation Street cast members (PA) 'His death marks the end of an era for the world's longest-running soap, where he became a cornerstone of its storytelling.' When the soap started more than six decades ago, Lowrie's character was seen as a national heartthrob thanks to his roguish role. Dennis was introduced as the son of Elsie Tanner, and moved in with his mother after being released from prison. He left the Street in 1968, when he married Jenny Sutton and moved to Bristol, and did not return until 2011. According to Mr Renzullo, Lowrie was presented in September 2011 with a certificate by the Guinness World Records for being the person with the longest gap between television appearances as the same character in the same show. Philip Lowrie on stage, pictured second from right (PA) Dennis soon got back in touch with newsagent Rita Sullivan (Barbara Knox), who was her sweetheart when she first appeared in the show in 1966, and they tied the knot when he came back. He left the soap again in 2014, and was later killed off without making another appearance on screen. Lowrie had originally auditioned for the role of Ken Barlow prior to the show's launch, and appeared in the first episode at the age of 24. William Roache was soon cast as Ken for the beginning of the soap, and became a regular sparring partner for Dennis. Born in Ashton-under-Lyne, near Manchester, Lowrie's mother saved for his fees to go to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (Rada) in London after he left school. After graduating three years later, he soon received his first parts in the West End, appearing with Dame Margaret Rutherford and Peggy Mount in the play Farewell, Farewell, Eugene. He also appeared on Victoria Wood's comedy shows, such as Victoria Wood's All Day Breakfast, Victoria Wood, Pat and Margaret, Live In Your Own Room, We'd Quite Like To Apologise, Victoria Wood As Seen On TV, and Wood And Walters. His later stage lead roles in the 2000s and 2010s included being in Dame Agatha Christie's The Mousetrap, The Case Of The Frightened Lady and The Lady Vanishes.
