Fashion Museum Bath gets grant for online catalogue project

The Fashion Museum Bath has been awarded a grant to help it develop a new online catalogue museum closed in 2022 for a major refurbishment, and is not expected to reopen in its new home until Council England's £20,000 grant will help the venue create a searchable catalogue, in collaboration with the local library McKinlay, Fashion Museum Bath project director, said the grant would help the team rethink how its collection can be experienced for future generations. The collection at Fashion Museum Bath spans across four centuries of work, from 1600 to the modern era, and was moved in 2022 to Dents heritage glovemakers in Warminster while the new venue is developed, meaning there is only limited public people will co-create the catalogue, along with Bath and North East Somerset Libraries, focussing initially on the Dress Of The Year McKinlay added: "We are excited to embark on this journey to create the museum's first searchable online catalogue starting with the Dress of the Year collection. "By creating an online catalogue, we aim to set a new standard in cultural preservation and accessibility."It marks an exciting moment in our ambition to make Fashion Museum Bath accessible to all."Councillor Paul Roper, Cabinet Member for Economic & Cultural Sustainable Development, said the council was "delighted" to get the grant, adding it will support creative jobs in the city. Emmie Kell, director of museums and Cultural Property at Arts Council England, said: "This is great news for public access to one of the most important fashion collections in the country."As the Fashion Museum undergoes transformation, the digitisation of its archives will ensure ongoing public access to its unique Designated collections."I'm especially pleased to hear young people will be part of the process... a project sure to support the museum's next exciting chapter."

Residents remember past shops on busy parade

Long time residents of Reading have been remembering a series of past shops on a busy parade. Many residents remembered visiting the shops and even working at them in their younger years. Murray Leese posted on the Facebook group Reading & Thames Valley Area "Memories of another day two photographs of Henley Road's parade of shops comparing the past businesses to the modern day ones. Along with the comparison photograph, he posted the following caption: "The Parade of shops Henley Road Reading.." he wrote. Almost 100 people flocked to the comment section to share their memories of the past shops that once occupied that parade. One person wrote "Used to be a Taylor's Racing betting shop there," with a second person saying "Edwin Dent newsagent on the far right… done a paper round there years ago." Another person said "I think that was the greengrocer shop Paul," with a further person writing "Always in Dents newsagents Nan lived in Anglefield Road." Others chimed in with similar memories of the past parade of shops, some remembering times when they used to work for the businesses there. One person said "The wavy line butchers and the cake shop i remember a bike shop being there at one time as well as Edwin Dents." A second person wrote "Did my paper rounds from Dents the Newsagents and PO 70-72. Each week I bought a 10p stamp for my savings book. Bought our Mountfield lawnmower from the DIY shop in 85. Were able to buy sherry in a half gallon bottle from the Hop Inn. Had some great shops." A further person shared "That takes me back. I remember going to Reeds with Mum when I was a nipper, for her knitting patterns and wool." Further people said that they too remembered visiting the shops along the parade, with others stating that they had also worked for Dents News agents delivering papers. One person wrote "Used to my paper round from the newsagent when I was a kid.," with a second person writing "My mum used to live around in the corner in Mayfild Drive for 30 years." Another person said "Lived round corner off Chiltern Road. Happy memories." A further person wrote "Those were the days when you could walk on the pavement in front of the shops without fear of being run over."
