Sean Payton finally lands ex-Lions coach he targeted for years

Sean Payton finally lands ex-Lions coach he targeted for years Sean Payton finally got his man. After losing several members of his staff this spring, the Denver Broncos' coach managed to land someone he had been targeting for years: new director of game management/OL assistant Evan Rothstein. 'Evan, I tried to hire before," Payton said in March. "I tried to hire Evan when he was leaving Detroit, Rothstein. He ended up in New England, but I had interviewed him in New Orleans. So every season, I've always kind of paid attention to what he's doing. He's real smart. He's a football coach. He's also someone who has a great way about him, both analytically and from a preparation standpoint. So finally that worked out." Rothstein worked for the Lions from 2012 to 2020 before landing with the Patriots, where he held various positions for four seasons before landing in Denver. When he was with the New Orleans Saints in 2021, Payton attempted to hire Rothstein, but the coach ended up in New England. Four years later, Rothstein has joined Payton with the Broncos. Bo Nix and Courtland Sutton send fun care packages to their moms

Bo Nix and Courtland Sutton send fun care packages to their moms The Denver Broncos' duo of Courtland Sutton and Bo Nix aren't done sending packages yet. They are sending special packages to their moms for Mother's Day. In April, Sutton and Nix teamed up to send a personalized care package to Broncos draft picks. Ahead of Mother's Day today, they sent packages a little closer to home. "We may be great athletes, but we're even better sons," Sutton said in an Instagram post sponsored by FedEx. Nix said that he loves that his mom is "the most hard-working person I know, and she taught me to be independent." Sutton said that his mom is the best "because she loves me, and she's taught me everything about this game of life." In their packages, both of the teammates sent framed pictures of them and their moms, a MVM (most valuable mom) trophy, and a personalized mix tape CD. Sutton sent a pair of his cleats that he used during the 2024 season to make a toe-tapping touchdown from Nix to his mother, while Nix sent a Broncos keychain to his mother. Nix and Sutton are strengthening their off-the-field relationship, which will hopefully transfer over to even more successful on-the-field success in 2025. Why Justin Simmons Won't Be Happening For Eagles

For the last two offseasons, the Philadelphia Eagles have been tied to the likes of All-Pro safety Justin Simmons. The former Denver Broncos' connection to defensive coordinator Vic Fangio is a big reason why. But there's a reason why the Eagles avoided Simmons last season. And there's an even bigger reason why he remains unsigned now. Advertisement Simmons struggled in his lone season with the Atlanta Falcons last year. He's on the wrong side of 30, and has dealt with ineffective play over the last few years. In his mind, going back to play for a play-caller in Fangio that helped him reach All-Pro status is a no-brainer. It's why his name continues to come up when the Eagles consider any free agent players. "He wants to come to Philadelphia," Brian Baldinger said on NFL Network. "He wants to be there. They drafted Andrew Mukuba out of Texas, which is good. They've drafted Sydney Brown to go along with Reed Blankenship. There's players there, but no one with the numbers, the interceptions, and really the leadership that he can provide. "They lost Darius Slay. They lost some leaders in that secondary. He provides find him a house in South Jersey. He's gonna be here." Advertisement Leadership only goes so far - especially for a team that just won the Super Bowl. The fact that the Eagles have drafted a safety in the second round, as well as traded away Chauncey Gardner-Johnson this offseason, shows that the Eagles are looking to get younger on defense. And whether Simmons wants to be an Eagle or not is irrelevant. The team clearly doesn't want him. View the RAS scores for the Broncos' draft class

View the RAS scores for the Broncos' draft class Kent Lee Platte created a metric called "Relative Athletic Scores" (RAS) that measures how prospects stack up against other players at their position based on combined athletic categories like height, weight, 40-yard dash times and more. The scores are graded on a one (worst) to ten (best) scale and weighed against results of current and previous draft classes. This year, five of the Denver Broncos' draft picks posted a qualifying RAS score, with defensive lineman Saiv'ion Jones (6-5, 280 pounds) leading the way with a 9.20 score. Up next behind him is tight end Caleb Lohner (6-7, 256 pounds) at 8.83. The three other players with qualifying grades are cornerback Jahdae Barron (5-11, 194 pounds) at 8.63, running back RJ Harvey (5-8, 205 pounds) at 8.49 and wide receiver Pat Bryant (6-2, 204 pounds) at 7.05. Edge defender Que Robinson (6-4, 243 pounds) and punter Jeremy Crawshaw (6-4, 198 pounds) did not have enough publicly available testing results to qualify for a score. Here's a look at each player's RAS score: Round 1: CB Jahdae Barron (RAS: 8.63) Round 2: RB RJ Harvey (RAS: 8.49) Round 3: WR Pat Bryant (RAS: 7.05) Round 3: DE Sai'vion Jones (RAS: 9.20) Round 4: OLB Que Robinson (RAS: N/A) Round 6: P Jeremy Crawshaw (RAS: N/A) Round 7: TE Caleb Lohner (RAS: 8.83) These players are set to report for the start of rookie minicamp next week, followed by organized team activities later in May (view the full offseason schedule).
