Wales-based rugby star: Springbok dream burns brightly

When looking at the Springboks' squad, the one position where they undoubtedly need to build some depth is at hooker. As we saw at the last World Cup when Malcolm Marx was injured, the Springboks had to turn to veteran utility forward Deon Fourie to serve as the back-up hooker to Bongi Mbonambi despite the fact he wasn't a specialist in this position. With this in mind, Marnus van der Merwe – who has made a massive impact since moving from the Cheetahs to Wales-based Scarlets – could be a bolter who comes into the picture. The Nelspruit-born forward was selected for the Springboks' wider alignment camp in February of last year, and the 28-year-old readily admits that playing international rugby remains a big ambition. 'I think as a child, any South African watching the game, with the Springboks doing well, everyone wants to play for that team, just like people in Wales who grew up watching their team,' he says. 'So everyone wants to play for their nation. It's definitely a thing I am going for, but I focus on the next thing which is helping the Scarlets where I can. 'Then, through that, I hope the Springbok coaches can see what I bring and see that I have the talent to be there. 'My goal is to get into international rugby. Everyone hopes for that. I just go out and play the best I can every single day. Hopefully that's enough.' Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211. Springbok 'sheds a tear' as rugby legend retires

Earlier this year it was confirmed that Stormers prop Brok Harris would be retiring at the end of the season after an incredible career that saw him play in more than 150 games for the Stormers and Western Province to go with 143 appearances for the Dragons in Wales. Unfortunately, the 40-year-old has been forced to hang up his boots a little earlier than expected after picking up a serious injury after the recent win against Benetton. Despite the fact he won't have a fairytale finish, tributes have poured in from far and wide as one of the true servants of South African rugby hangs up his boots. In an emotive video posted to social media by the Stormers this week, the caption read: 'Farewell to a legend. We have come to the end of a remarkable career which spanned 19 years. Nobody has played more games for the Stormers than Brok Harris, but his impact was felt far beyond the four white lines.' Featuring a host of special tributes to the iconic prop, it also drew an understandably emotional response from Springbok veteran Deon Fourie, who has played a large part of his career alongside Harris.

Veteran forward Fourie wins contract extension

CAPE TOWN :Veteran utility forward Deon Fourie has been given a one-year contract extension with the Stormers, despite an injury that has brought a premature end to his season, the South African franchise announced on Wednesday. The 38-year-old loose forward had ankle surgery earlier this month after getting injured in the United Rugby Championship clash against Connacht in Cape Town on April 19 and will not play again in this campaign but has been retained for the next. "Deon is a true warrior and still has a significant contribution to make for us next season, both on the field and in terms of his leadership," said Stormers coach John Dobson in a statement. "He is a remarkable player who has done so much for this team over the years and we know that he will give all he has in characteristic fashion when he returns next season," he added. Fourie was a makeshift hooker for South Africa in the 2023 World Cup final, where they edged New Zealand in Paris, and had recently been called up for a Springbok training camp ahead of the June internationals despite also sustaining a major knee injury last campaign. Fourie was the oldest debutant in South Africa's history when he earned a first cap in 2022, three months shy of his 36th birthday. He has bounced between the front and back of the scrum in his career, which took in seven years playing club rugby in France before returning to Cape Town in 2021 and winning belated Springbok selection and folk hero status.

Stormers stalwart Deon Fourie extends stay in the Cape

Stormers stalwart Deon Fourie has signed a one-year contract extension and will be available to play from the start of next season. The all-action utility forward currently has 132 Stormers caps to his name, putting him fourth on the all-time list behind Steven Kitshoff (138), Frans Malherbe (152) and Brok Harris (170). Having recently suffered a leg injury in the United Rugby Championship victory against Connacht, Fourie will return to full fitness before the start of next season and will be ready to make an impact from the side of the scrum once again. Director of Rugby John Dobson said that the attitude and determination that Fourie has met his latest setback with sums up the man he is. 'Deon is a true warrior and still has a significant contribution to make for us next season, both on the field and in terms of his leadership. 'He is a remarkable player who has done so much for this team over the years and we know that he will give allhe has in characteristic fashion when he returns next season,' he said. Fourie said that while missing the business-end of the current season will be frustrating, he is ready to empty the tank for the team he has served so well next season. 'Injuries are part of the game and luckily this one was not as severe as it could have been. I'll get right behind the boys as they head towards the playoffs and then focus on recovery and making as big an impact as I can next season. 'Playing for this team means a lot to me and you can be sure that I'll be giving all I can and making the most of every chance I get to pull that jersey on next season,' he said.
