BEE urges Andhra Pradesh to use World Environment Day to promote energy conservation
Visakhapatnam: The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), under the Union ministry of power, has called upon Andhra Pradesh to commemorate the forthcoming on Thursday, June 5, with a focus on energy efficiency, energy conservation, and the broader objectives of Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment). Tired of too many ads? go ad free now For those unfamiliar, Mission LiFE was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at COP26 in Glasgow in 2021. In this connection, BEE secretary Milind Deore has addressed a letter to all state designated agencies (SDAs), noting that Mission LiFE advocates responsible consumption, climate-positive actions, and sustainable lifestyles. "A central component of this initiative is promoting practices that reduce energy demand and carbon footprints, which directly supports India's long-term environmental and economic goals," said Deore. "As part of BEE's energy efficiency drive in both commercial and residential sectors, SDAs are urged to actively campaign for maintaining air conditioner temperature settings at 24°C or higher. They should also encourage behaviour-based energy-saving practices such as switching off lights and appliances when not in use, maximising the use of natural light and ventilation, and shifting to LED lighting and other energy-efficient alternatives," added Deore. Proactive SDAs, including the Andhra Pradesh State Energy Conservation Mission (APSECM), are encouraged to implement several key initiatives to promote energy efficiency. According to A Chandra Shekhara Reddy, media adviser – southern states/UTs, BEE, these include advocating the widespread use of five-star rated energy-efficient appliances—particularly air conditioners, refrigerators, and ceiling fans, which significantly reduce electricity consumption and costs. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Public awareness drives should be conducted to help consumers identify and choose energy-efficient products certified under BEE's Star Labelling Programme. Collaboration with state environment departments and local institutions is essential to disseminate information about Mission LiFE's 75 non-disruptive lifestyle changes, with energy efficiency as a central theme. "Illustrating the potential impact, simply setting air conditioners at 24°C can lead to substantial energy savings across millions of households. Promoting five-star rated appliances could reduce electricity demand by several billion kilowatt-hours (kWh). Behavioural changes and conscious consumption are projected to contribute to a saving of 22.5 billion kWh under Mission LiFE. BEE also recommends the use of solar water heaters and cookers to lessen dependence on conventional fuels, the adoption of CNG or electric vehicles and bicycles for short distances, and the implementation of water conservation measures and eco-friendly building practices," said Chandra Shekhara Reddy. Use ACs at default setting of 24 degrees: BEE to citizens
Hyderabad: The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), a statutory body under the Union Ministry of Power, said it has intensified its energy conservation campaign to promote responsible air conditioner (AC) usage. BEE has called on citizens and commercial establishments across Hyderabad and major towns to maintain air conditioners at a default setting of 24°C. With a population exceeding 90 lakh and a massive residential and commercial consumer base, BEE has identified Hyderabad as one of the key focus cities in the energy-saving drive that promotes energy-efficient cooling to tackle rising temperatures and encourages cost-effective AC usage to benefit both consumers and the environment. Milind Deore, Secretary, BEE, has emphasised on the need for Telangana State Renewable Energy Development Corporation (TSREDCO) State designated agency (SDA) to launch a focused awareness campaign targeting homes, offices, malls, hotels, and government buildings in the city. 'Hyderabad's energy consumption pattern also directly impacts national power stability and climate targets. A collective shift to 24°C AC settings could be a game-changer,' Deore said during first-phase of interaction with key SDAs. Directors Abhishek Sharma and Kamran Sheikh were also present. V Aneela, Managing Director of TSREDCO, confirmed that the agency will take up this initiative on a war footing across Hyderabad and Telangana. BEE has urged AC manufacturers to set 24°C as the default factory setting for all new air conditioning units. 'If even 50 per cent of Hyderabad's consumers adopt this practice, we could significantly cut power demand and emissions,' Deore added. BEE has emphasised that the initiative must be aggressively implemented in high-consumption zones such as hotels, IT parks, airports, shopping malls, and public offices. One AC unit running for 8 –10 hours daily can emit nearly 10 kg of CO₂, making efficient usage essential for combating climate change, an official BEE release mentioned. According to BEE estimates, increasing the AC temperature setting by just 1°C can reduce electricity usage by up to six per cent, up to 20 billion units of electricity can be saved annually, financial savings could touch Rs 10,000 crore in the country, and carbon emissions could drop by 8.2 million tonnes per year.

India's New Passport Rule: Add Spouse's Name Without Marriage Certificate
NEW DELHI, April 11: In a significant move to simplify the passport application process for Indian citizens, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has announced that applicants can now add their spouse's name to their passport without the need for a marriage certificate. The new rule introduces a Joint Photo Declaration (Annexure J) as a valid substitute for the traditional marriage certificate. According to Arjun Deore, the regional passport officer in Pune, the Joint Photo Declaration, signed by both husband and wife, will now serve as an official alternative to the marriage certificate. This change addresses a common challenge faced by applicants who often struggle to provide a valid marriage certificate, especially in regions where marriages are not always formally registered. A senior passport official explained that the new rule is intended to address the significant disparities in marriage registration practices across India. While marriages in Maharashtra are generally registered by default, many northern states do not mandate marriage registration, leaving applicants without formal documentation. The MEA introduced the Joint Photo Declaration to accommodate applicants who often lack complete paperwork. Annexure J requires the couple to declare their names, address, and marital status, confirming that they have been living together as a married couple. The form also includes a space for a self-attested joint photograph, and both parties must sign the declaration, specifying the place and date. Additionally, the form asks for Aadhaar Card numbers, voter IDs, and passport numbers (if available) for both spouses. Dr. Deore further clarified that the form includes a designated section for the joint photograph, and the declaration will be considered valid only if all fields are completed, including names, Aadhaar numbers, voter IDs, and passport numbers where applicable. However, the ministry emphasized that removing a spouse's name from a passport still requires a divorce decree or court order. To update a spouse's name following a divorce, applicants will need to provide either a divorce decree, the death certificate of the previous spouse, a remarriage certificate, or the Joint Photo Declaration (Annexure J) signed by both parties, along with updated identity documents, including QR-code-enabled Aadhaar verification. This change is expected to streamline the passport application process for many citizens, especially those in regions where marriage registration practices may differ.
