Society has a collective responsibility for curbing substance abuse, says SP
Udupi Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar on Thursday said it is the collective responsibility of society to curb substance abuse.
Mr. Shankar was the chief guest at the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking programme, organised jointly by the Udupi District Police, the Department of Pre-University Education, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, and A.V. Baliga Group of Institutions.
MAHE vice-chancellor M.D. Venkatesh spoke about the role educational institutions play in transforming youth into responsible citizens. Principal of Government PU College, Udupi, Leela Bai Bhat, spoke about the importance of community and family support in drug prevention strategies. Director of A.V. Baliga Group of Institutions, also spoke.
Scientific way
Udupi Deputy Director of Women and Child Development C.K. Shyamala on Thursday said anti-drug awareness drives should be carried out scientifically to keep pre-university and degree students away from drugs.
Speaking at the International Day Against Drug Abuse programme organised by the Udupi District administration at the Christian Pre-University College in Udupi, Ms. Shyamala said drug abuse among students was a major issue in the education sector.
Disposed
As much as 3.542 kg of narcotic drugs seized by different police stations in Udupi police were disposed of at an authorised unit in Padubidri on Thursday.
As part of Drug Abuse prevention day, artistes Ravi and Lokesh did sand sculpture 'Nasha Mukt Udupi' on the Malpe Beach.
Nearly 600 students participated in the seminar, essay, and poster-making competitions related to narcotic drug abuse, which were organised at the Justice K.S. Hegde Institute of Management in Nitte on Thursday.
