Telangana Govt to provide ₹1 Lakh incentive for marriage between people with disabilities

In a significant step towards aiding persons with disabilities, the Telangana government has issued an order extending the Marriage Incentive Scheme to include marriages between two individuals with disabilities. Women and Child Welfare Minister Danasari Anasuya (Seethakka) has made special efforts in this regard. A government order to this effect was issued on Monday (May 19, 2025) by Secretary, Department of Women and Child Welfare Secretary, Anita Ramachandran. Under the scheme, the government will provide financial assistance of ₹1 lakh to couples in which both are persons with disabilities. The incentive will be given in the name of the wife. This decision marks a shift from the previous scheme. Previously, the Department of Women and Child Welfare had issued guidelines for the Marriage Incentive Award scheme, providing ₹1 lakh to couples where one of the partners was a person with disability and the other was not. However, this scheme did not apply to marriages between two persons with disabilities.

Survey to collect data on Scheduled Castes to be intensified in Mandya

The survey to collect relevant data on Scheduled Castes (SCs) in Mandya district that commenced on May 5th will be intensified, said Deputy Commissioner Kumar. He also directed the officials to expedite the process. The survey is being conducted following a directive of the one-man inquiry commission led by Justice H.N. Nagamohan Das regarding the classification of internal reservation within the Scheduled Castes. Dr. Kumar said that Mandya only reported 26% progress with regard to the gathering of SC data, and hence, directed the officials to expedite the process. In all, 1,889 enumerators have been appointed for the survey in the district and during the exercise, tahsildars, taluk executive officers, block education officers, and nodal officers also visit the sites where enumerators are carrying out the survey and conduct spot inspection. The staff engaged in the survey will report directly to the district administration, and a deadline was set to complete the survey in all Scheduled Caste households in the district within the next three days, according to Dr. Kumar. He noted that as per the 2011 census, there are 61,423 Scheduled Caste households in the district. However, surveys have so far covered only 15,973 households, and therefore described the progress of the exercise as slack. The Deputy Commissioner, who held a review meeting with officials on Friday, also met leaders of the SC community in Mandya district. He said the exercise should entail visiting every household in the district. There should not be a single instance of any Scheduled Caste family being left out of the caste survey for any reason, the Deputy Commissioner said. He directed that tahsildars and officials from the Department of Social Welfare in each taluk must monitor daily progress and ensure 100% completion apart from ensuring that the census staff achieve their daily targets. Additional Deputy Commissioner B.C. Shivanand Murthy, Deputy Director of the Department of Women and Child Welfare, and others were present at the meeting.

Telangana government plans Rs 4,000 aid for kids in foster care

HYDERABAD: The state government is going to the rescue of the children in foster care, particularly those who have lost their biological parents. It is initiating measures to strengthen care, sponsorship and post-institutional rehabilitation for orphans. The cornerstone of the proposed policy is a new financial assistance scheme that would offer `4,000 per month to families or guardians who take in orphaned children under temporary custody or guardianship. Speaking to TNIE, the officials from the Department of Women and Child Welfare, headed by Minister Dansari Anasuya alias Seethakka, said that the initiative is under active consideration and is expected to be launched during the current financial year. The government estimates suggest that between 2,500 and 3,500 children could benefit from this targeted foster care initiative. Fostering emotional and social growth The focus, according to departmental sources, is not only on providing shelter but also on fostering emotional and social growth through a family-like environment. 'Orphans often grow up without meaningful relationships. While orphanages offer basic necessities, they sometimes fall short in teaching human values and emotional bonds integral to the Indian family system. This scheme aims to bridge that gap and ensure holistic development,' said a senior official, requesting anonymity. In addition to this proposed foster care support, the government is also looking to expand its existing 'sponsorship' programme, which currently provides financial assistance to over 7,000 vulnerable children living with extended family members. Under this programme, beneficiaries receive Rs 4,000 monthly to cover educational and health-related expenses. Authorities are now considering doubling the number of beneficiaries by the fiscal year 2025-26. Recognizing the challenges faced by orphans as they transition into adulthood, the government is also planning a new post-care initiative designed to support young adults after they age out of institutional care. This transition support programme would aim to equip orphans with life skills and financial assistance to help them move toward independent living. However, it remains to be seen as to when the government will roll out these social-security schemes designed for the wellbeing of the most disadvantaged children.
