Retired Derek Carr: Didn't want to 'just take the Saints money'
June 5 - Derek Carr announced his retirement last month, a decision that saw him forgo $30 million by opting against shoulder surgery. Had he gone under the knife, the veteran quarterback still would have been paid by the New Orleans Saints despite being sidelined for the duration of the 2025 season. "That part was tough because I didn't want to have surgery and just sit there and -- it sounds crazy but -- just take the Saints' money," Carr told Front Office Sports in a story published on Wednesday. "I wouldn't have been able to play if I had the surgery. And then if I tried to play with it, I wasn't near 100 percent, and so that doesn't help them, either. I just felt like it was the right thing to do for myself and for the team." The Saints disclosed that Carr had a labral tear and "significant degenerative changes to his rotator cuff." Carr, 34, signed a four-year, $150 million contract with New Orleans in 2023. "I never played just for the money," he said. "I had a whole bunch of people tell me how crazy I was, and, 'Man, I would never have done that.' That's all cool, but I've gained all these things that the world has to offer, and it doesn't really do anything for your heart. I knew my heart was at peace, and that's really all that mattered." The Saints selected quarterback Tyler Shough in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft in April. They also have 2024 fifth-round pick Spencer Rattler and 2023 fourth-round selection Jake Haener on the roster. Carr was 14-13 as the starter in New Orleans over two seasons, although he was limited to 10 games in 2024 due to injuries. A four-time Pro Bowl selection, Carr threw for 41,245 yards and 257 touchdowns against 112 interceptions in 169 games for the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders (2014-22) and Saints. He was selected by the Raiders in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft out of Fresno State. --Field Level Media

Derek Carr on retiring: I didn't want to 'just take the Saints money'
New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr shocked the NFL world last month when he announced his retirement due to an ongoing shoulder injury that would require surgery and likely sideline him for the entire 2025 season. But why did Carr decide to retire, rather than get healthy while under contract for the Saints? "That part was tough [leaving money on the table] because I didn't want to have surgery and just sit there, and it sounds crazy, but just take the Saints money," Carr said in an interview with Front Office Sports. Carr, 34, was entering the third season of a four-year, $150 million contract. His 2024 campaign was hindered by an oblique injury, which sidelined Carr for three games, and later a season-ending hand injury. Across the 10 games that Carr appeared in, he totaled 2,145 passing yards, 15 passing touchdowns, five interceptions and a 101.0 passer rating, while completing 67.7% of his passes. He ranked seventh among quarterbacks in passing grade (86.7) and 11th in overall grade (85.6), according to Pro Football Focus. "I wouldn't have been able to play if I had the surgery," Carr said. "And then if I tried to play with it, I wasn't near 100%, and so that doesn't help them, either. I just felt like it was the right thing to do for myself and for the team." When Carr retired, the Saints stated that the quarterback had a "labral tear" and "significant degenerative changes to his rotator cuff." Carr, a four-time Pro Bowler, spent the first nine seasons of his NFL career with the Raiders (2014-22), with whom he's first in franchise history with both 35,222 passing yards and 217 passing touchdowns. In his first season with the Saints (2023), Carr totaled 3,878 passing yards, 25 passing touchdowns, eight interceptions and a 97.7 passer rating, while completing 68.4% of his passes. New Orleans went 9-8 and missed the playoffs. "I never played just for the money," Carr said. "I had a whole bunch of people tell me how crazy I was, and 'Man, I would never have done that.' That's all cool, but I've gained all these things that the world has to offer, and it doesn't really do anything for your heart. I knew my heart was at peace, and that's really all that mattered." As for the Saints, they selected Louisville quarterback Tyler Shough with the No. 40 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft and have 2024 fifth-rounder Spencer Rattler, who made six starts as a rookie, and Jake Haener in their quarterback room. Report: Another Saints player has already taken Derek Carr's jersey number
Report: Another Saints player has already taken Derek Carr's jersey number Derek Carr's No. 4 jersey now belongs to a Saints defensive back Derek Carr officially retired from the New Orleans Saints on Tuesday, but his jersey number has already been reassigned. According to multiple reports, including the popular NFL Jersey Numbers account on social media, cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry will now wear the No. 4. This is the number worn by Carr for the Saints the previous two seasons. The change has already been reflected on the team's official website roster. McKinstry was selected by the Saints in Round 2 of the 2024 NFL draft out of Alabama. He wore No. 1 throughout all three of his years with the Crimson Tide, but was initially assigned No. 34 after being drafted by the Saints. McKinstry wore that number throughout training camp and preseason. Just prior to the start of the 2024 regular season, he'd switch to jersey No. 14 and wore that through his rookie year. As a rookie, McKinstry appeared in 15 games for the Saints, starting nine contests. He played in 65% of the defensive snaps (680) and added 33 more snaps on special teams. McKinstry did not record an interception, but broke up 6 passes and gave up only 54.8% completion percentage when targeted in coverage. He had a total of 42 tackles, including 32 solo stops and two for negative yardage. Kool-Aid McKinstry will become the first defensive player to wear No. 4 in New Orleans franchise history. Ten other players have worn that number for the Saints during a regular season game. All of them have been a quarterback, punter, or placekicker.

Aaron Rodgers reveals team he has no interest playing for as free agency decision looms
Aaron Rodgers has yet to make a decision on whether to sign with a new team for the 2025 season after two years with the New York Jets or walk away from the game altogether. He made clear over the weekend that there's at least one team he will not be signing with – the New Orleans Saints. The Saints could be in need of a quarterback as the organization weighs whether to go with Tyler Shough, Spencer Rattler or someone else to start the year as Derek Carr retired following a serious shoulder injury. Rodgers was in Texas for a live episode of the "YNK Podcast" and was asked by a fan whether he would consider playing for the Saints. "No," Rodgers replied without any hesitation. "That's the answer. I've played there a couple times, but no, the answer is no. I'm too old. I don't want to live in Louisiana. Sorry." All signs have pointed to Rodgers playing with the Pittsburgh Steelers but the pen has not been put to paper. He was also asked during the show whether he would consider playing with the Chicago Bears. In his answer, he dropped one of the biggest hints yet that he had his sights on Pittsburgh. "No, but I believe there's a team that might play in Chicago this year on a road trip," he said. "I don't know, not sure. Got to check it out. I love Chicago, though. Way more than they love me. It's been a great relationship. All one-way." The Steelers will play in Chicago on Nov. 23. Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Aaron Rodgers on whether he would sign with the Saints
So just who is going to play quarterback for the New Orleans Saints this year? Derek Carr is retiring and Jake Haener is going to miss the summer recovering from an oblique muscle injury, so the likeliest answer is either Spencer Rattler or rookie second-round pick Tyler Shough. And if Aaron Rodgers has anything to say about it (and he does), it won't be him. While fielding questions from the crowd before a concert in Texas, Rodgers was asked by a fan if he'd consider signing with the Saints. Advertisement "No," Rodgers replied flatly. He laughed and continued, "That's the answer. No, I've played there a couple times. But no. The answer is no. I'm too old, I don't want to live in Louisiana. Sorry." Rodgers previously didn't list the Saints among his potential landing spots, and after being cut by the New York Jets his only real opportunity seems to have come from the Pittsburgh Steelers. Rodgers has been stringing the Steelers along for months now but it doesn't appear a signing is imminent. His disinterest in even using the rumor of interest from the Saints as leverage in contract talks with Pittsburgh speaks volumes. But this much is clear: if the 10-time Pro Bowler does suit up in 2025, he won't be doing so in New Orleans.
