According to a news release from the United States Attorney's Office Southern District of Alabama, Derrick C. Busby, 34, was arrested on Oct. 22, 2023, after a traffic stop.

The USDOJ news release said officers saw marijuana on Busby's lap and watched him drink from a bottle of prescription-only promethazine syrup — an allergy medication — and swallow marijuana during the traffic stop, the release said.
Officers then searched Busby's car and found a loaded Taurus 9 mm pistol, a loaded extended magazine, a digital scale and other items, the release said.
According to the release, the pistol they found had been reported stolen to the Daphne Police Department by its original owner in December 2022.
Busby told police the gun was his, and he'd heard it was stolen and might have been connected to a homicide, the release said. He also told authorities that he was a convicted felon.
At the time of his arrest, Busby had prior felony convictions for robbery and burglary, which made his possession of the pistol illegal under federal law.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; and the Mobile Police Department investigated the case.
