Nashville police investigate wreck that killed Cookeville man on I-40
Police investigating a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 40 in Nashville Friday evening that resulted in the death of the driver believe alcohol and high speed were factors.
Derrick P. Borchardt II, 22, of Cookeville, died from injuries sustained in the wreck on I-40 eastbound near the I-440 junction, according to Nashville police. A 22-year-old passenger received minor injuries, police said.
Borchardt was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer that investigators say was moving erratically and changing lanes. The wreck occurred around 6:30 p.m.
The Trailblazer traveled to the far right of the roadway, quickly went back to the left, and struck a rock wall, according to the investigation. The Trailblazer then rolled over and came to rest on the passenger side.
Borchardt was taken by ambulance to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he died, police said.
There were open alcohol containers in the Trailblazer, according to police. The passenger made statements they had been drinking prior to the crash, according to police.
