Seneca Lake and Erie Canal exhibit to open in Montour Falls
MONTOUR FALLS, N.Y. (WETM) — Community members can learn about the history of Seneca Lake and the Erie Canal's waterways during a talk and exhibit opening in Montour Falls on Sunday.
The Schuyler County Historical Society is hosting a free historical talk and reception for the grand opening of a new exhibit on March 2. The talk, which is part of the historical society's Talkin' History program, and the exhibit will take guests through two centuries of Seneca Lake and Erie Canal history as the state celebrates the canal opening 200 years ago.
Derrick Pratt, the director of education and public programming at the Erie Canal Museum, will teach guests about how immigrants impacted the construction, operation, and culture of the Erie Canal during his presentation called 'Immigration on the Erie Canal.' The talk will start at 2 p.m. at the Montour Falls Fire Department, which is located on Lee Street.

After the talk, guests can take a two-minute drive to the Brick Tavern Museum on North Catherine Street for the opening reception of '200 Years: Seneca Lake and the Erie Canal Waterways' from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The exhibit will focus on the important role Seneca Lake plays in New York State's canal system.
People who can't make it to the opening reception can visit the exhibit at the museum until November. Those who want to learn even more about the Erie Canal's history can check out two traveling exhibits that will arrive in April and August. The Brick Tavern Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursdays. Museum admission is free.
