Katie Maloney Calls ‘Vanderpump Rules' Reboot ‘Cheap': ‘Why Can't It Just Be a Whole Different Show?'
Katie Maloney is not holding back when it comes to how she really feels about the Vanderpump Rules reboot. "This isn't against any of [the new cast]. I don't know them, but it just feels cheap to me. It feels cheap and I don't like cheap," Maloney said during the Tuesday, April 22, episode of her ex-husband Tom Schwartz's "Detox Retox" podcast. "This isn't anything to do with them or anything like that." Maloney pondered why season 12 couldn't be "a whole different show" if there's all new cast members, adding, "With the same name [but] different show. There's not even a season 1. To me, it just feels like it's going to try to have the same flavor and the same everything." After being on the show since it debuted in 2013, Maloney doesn't recommend trying to "replicate a recipe." What to Know About 'Vanderpump Rules' Season 12 After Cast Overhaul: Potential OG Cameos and More "I think everything that made our show great is also what tore us apart at the end," she added while reflecting on the show's legacy. Maloney was an OG star of Vanderpump Rules when it debuted as a spinoff of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and evolved into its own franchise. In the aftermath of Tom Sandoval's affair with Rachel "Raquel" Leviss, the show picked up cameras immediately to document season 11. The episodes, however, were met with mixed reactions and ultimately the show was put on pause amid cast tension. Bravo confirmed in November 2024 that season 12 begins production next year with Lisa Vanderpump and a brand-new group of cast members. Maloney, for her part, revealed that she didn't plan to return for season 12 before Bravo decided to overhaul the entire cast. "I had made a decision months ago after this past season. I needed to move on with my life," she explained on an episode of her "Disrespectfully" podcast in December 2024. "I had talked to our producers about it and I told them my decision on that. I felt personally ready to move on from the show. I felt like my life and where I was at was moving in a different direction. Mentally, emotionally, physically, spiritually, I was prepared to move on from the show." 'Vanderpump Rules' Cast: Then and Now Maloney noted she was ready for something new. "It had been a long time. I lived many lives and went through so much on that show," she continued. "It just got to a point where I don't know that I can live and grow and be the version of myself I want to be on this show any longer." Schwartz, meanwhile, has made appearances on VPR's The Valley as he looks ahead to his next projects. "We got 11 seasons. That's insane. I'm so grateful for that. So I have nothing to gripe or complain about. It was probably 11 of the best years of my life. I got to travel the world. And yeah, man, it was exhilarating," Schwartz told Us the same month about how he felt "nostalgic" and "sentimental" since news broke that he wasn't coming back for season 12, adding, "I still talk to everyone — mostly everybody. Everyone's thriving, everyone's doing their thing."

Katie Maloney slams Vanderpump rules reboot; 'It feels cheap'
Maloney, 38, who appeared in all 11 seasons of the hit reality series, opened up about her feelings on the April 22 episode of Detox Retox, the podcast hosted by her former co-star and ex-husband, Tom Schwartz . Though Maloney won't be returning for the reboot, she had strong words for the network's decision to continue the show with fresh faces. 'This isn't against any of [the new cast],' Maloney said. 'I don't know them, but it just feels cheap to me. It feels cheap and I don't like cheap.'She went on to criticize the idea of replicating the magic of the original series, which launched in 2013 as a Real Housewives of Beverly Hills spinoff centered around Lisa Vanderpump and the staff of her West Hollywood restaurant, SUR. 'You can't replicate a recipe,' Maloney said. 'It's the same name [but] different show. There's not even a season 1. To me, it just feels like it's going to try to have the same flavor and the same everything.' While some fans may be surprised by her stance, Maloney revealed she had already decided to walk away from the show before Bravo announced its plans for a reboot. In a December 2024 episode of her own podcast, Disrespectfully, she shared that she'd informed producers of her decision after filming wrapped on season 11. 'I had made a decision months ago after this past season. I needed to move on with my life,' she explained. 'Mentally, emotionally, physically, spiritually, I was prepared to move on from the show.' Maloney's departure followed the highly publicized 'Scandoval' — a cheating scandal involving castmates Tom Sandoval and Rachel Leviss, which rocked season 11 and resulted in strained relationships, especially with Sandoval's longtime girlfriend and fellow cast member Ariana Madix. The fallout was captured on-camera, despite Madix maintaining a strict no-contact rule with Sandoval during filming. The final reunion episode of season 11 aired in May 2024. Though Maloney won't be part of the show's next chapter, her candid commentary is a reminder of how much the original Vanderpump Rules cast helped define the franchise — and why attempting to recreate that lightning in a bottle may be a tall order.

Katie Maloney blasts 'cheap' Vanderpump Rules reboot
Katie Maloney thinks the 'Vanderpump Rules' reboot "feels cheap". The 38-year-old beauty previously starred on the hit reality TV show - but Katie is sceptical about the 'Vanderpump Rules' reboot. During an appearance on the 'Detox Retox' podcast, Katie shared: "This isn't against any of [the new cast]. I don't know them, but it just feels cheap to me. It feels cheap and I don't like cheap. This isn't anything to do with them or anything like that." Katie suggested that the reboot should be "a whole different show". The reality star explained: "With the same name [but] different show. There's not even a season one. To me, it just feels like it's going to try to have the same flavour and the same everything." Katie actually quit 'Vanderpump Rules' before Bravo decided to hire an all-new cast. Katie felt at the time that her life was moving in a different direction and she no longer wished to appear on 'Vanderpump Rules'. She said on the 'Disrespectfully' podcast in December 2024: "I had made a decision months ago after this past season. I needed to move on with my life. "I had talked to our producers about it and I told them my decision on that. I felt personally ready to move on from the show. I felt like my life and where I was at was moving in a different direction. Mentally, emotionally, physically, spiritually, I was prepared to move on from the show." Meanwhile, Lisa Vanderpump previously predicted that 'Vanderpump Rules' will return with a "different energy". The reality TV star told E! News: "I think everything we do is going to have a different energy to it. "Not gonna try and compete with the old 'Vanderpump Rules'. It's just gonna be totally different there. "Still, we'll go back to the premise of the complications of running a restaurant and the staff in it. And that always has a story to tell." Lisa had a "wonderful experience" filming with the show's original cast. But she recognises that now is the perfect time to make a change. She said: "It was time to do something different. Stories were kind of closing up a little bit. I think people, they weren't that shocked that we decided to do this now."

Vanderpump Rules original cast member calls Lisa's new reboot 'cheap'
has offered her honest opinion on the cast reboot for the upcoming 12th season of Bravo's Vanderpump Rules. The TV personality, 38 - who had been one of the original cast members on the reality series since 2013 - opened up about the topic on an episode of the Detox Retox podcast hosted by her ex-husband and former costar Tom Schwartz. Late last year in November, it was announced that the show would be getting an entirely new cast - with only Lisa Vanderpump returning. It came after the future of the series was left rocky amid a feuding cast. 'I was ready to walk away but it doesn't mean [I] don't care about our show and the legacy that we brought to it,' Katie told Schwartz - whom she was married to from 2013 until their divorce in 2022. She then added, 'I feel like this isn't against any of them. I don't know them but it just feels cheap to me. It feels cheap and I don't like cheap.' Maloney emphasized that she wasn't slamming the new cast, but instead wondered why the network just didn't create 'a whole different show.' She explained, 'To me it just feels like it's going try to have the same flavor, the same everything…. When you try to replicate the recipe just based off of taste, you can't do it.' The most recent 11th season - which finished airing last year - had featured Katie as well as Ariana Madix, Tom Sandoval, Tom Schwartz, Lala Kent, James Kennedy and Scheana Shay. However, episodes focused on the disputes and conflicts between the cast not long after Scandoval - where Sandoval cheated on his longtime girlfriend Ariana Madix with Rachel Leviss. The new cast will consist of 'close-knit SUR-vers who are as complicatedly involved with one another as their iconic predecessor,' per Bravo. Lisa expressed at the time of the reboot announcement: 'The last 12 years of filming have been an extraordinary run full of laughter, tears and everything in between. I can't thank enough those who have shared their lives. 'How I love you all. In the restaurant business, one shift always gives way to another. Cheers to the next generation of Vanderpump Rules.' The reboot will also 'celebrate the past decade of heartbreaks, friendship rifts and scandals with a retrospective special highlighting the past 11 seasons.' Sandoval also broke his silence after the news of the reboot was unveiled - and admitted on Instagram in November of last year that he was 'overwhelmed' with feelings. Lisa expressed at the time of the reboot announcement: 'The last 12 years of filming have been an extraordinary run full of laughter, tears and everything in between. I can't thank enough those who have shared their lives'; seen in 2024 in Beverly Hills 'Where do I begin… I'm overwhelmed with so many emotions right now… The unbelievable series of events that brought this group together still blows my mind to this day.' He added, 'From a random meeting with Jax [Taylor] while modeling in Miami, to responding to a Craigslist ad for another Tom looking for a roommate. 'Who would've thought that a stop along the way while chasing our dreams would turn into the cultural phenomenon that is Vanderpump Rules. We were unaware as to the effect this show would have on our lives.' Tom also told his followers, 'The foundation of Vanderpump Rules was built on pure honest raw emotions… triumphs, struggles, and love that happen between a group of real friends and our relationships.' In conclusion, the reality sent gratitude to those involved in the show as well as the fans. A few months earlier in February, Lisa revealed that the forthcoming season is set to feature some 'very interesting characters.' Vanderpump told Us Weekly she is convinced that the show's new stars will prove to be just as popular as the originals. 'I got some very interesting characters for sure, but SUR (her restaurant) has been around a long time, and as I say, it's a show we could have shot 12 months of the year,' she told the outlet. The restauranteur is convinced that the new cast will create lots of drama, too. She shared: 'When you have a restaurant, especially in Hollywood, with a revolving door of beautiful people who are all kind of normally rather large personalities because they come to Hollywood for a reason, it's always complicated.' The British TV personality went on, 'I am sure it's gonna be very different with these young little minxes when they get to work, but we shall see.' Lisa previously predicted that Vanderpump Rules would return with a 'different energy' for season 12. The reality star told E! News: 'I think everything we do is going to have a different energy to it. 'Not gonna try and compete with the old Vanderpump Rules. It's just gonna be totally different there. 'Still, we'll go back to the premise of the complications of running a restaurant and the staff in it. And that always has a story to tell.' Kristen Doute - who starred on Vanderpump Rules from 2013 until her exit in 2020 - also shared her thoughts on the cast reboot. 'I could not be happier not filming Vanderpump Rules,' she told Deadline earlier this month. 'Vanderpump Rules for me, was like the most toxic boyfriend, and if they hadn't broken up with me, I probably would have never left.'
