Watch Live: Detroit City FC vs. Portland Hearts of Pine
Detroit City Football Club returns to USL Jägermeister Cup action this Saturday as they travel to Maine to face off against USL League One side Portland Hearts of Pine. Kickoff from Fitzpatrick Stadium is set for 5 p.m. and will be broadcast locally on CW Detroit 50 (WKBD-TV). For Michigan residents, the match is free to stream on Le Rouge enters this match off a 3-1 defeat to Charleston Battery on Saturday afternoon. It was a brilliant start for Detroit, as Jay Chapman opened his Detroit City account with a goal in the second minute, but Detroit struggled to get anything going after that. A Cal Jennings first-half brace would see the visitors up 2-1 going into the half, and Juan Torres sealed the game with a goal in the 57th minute. Last time out in the Jägermeister Cup, Detroit City walked away with a 1-0 victory over Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC. Darren Smith saved the day for DCFC in the first minute of second-half stoppage time, heading the Ben Morris cross into the bottom corner of the net, giving Le Rouge its first three points of the competition's group stage. Portland Hearts of Pine enter this match on a four-match unbeaten streak in league play. In its inaugural season, Portland currently sits in 11th place in USL League One with one win, five draws, and one loss. Last weekend, Portland traveled to Madison, Wisconsin, to face off against Forward Madison FC in a match that ended in a 1-1 draw, resulting in shared points. After going down 1-0 seven minutes into the game, Portland fought back to level in the 35th minute off a Nathan Messer from outside the box. Portland's first match in the Jägermeister Cup came against Hartford Athletic, where the Connecticut club walked away with a 2-0 victory. Jack Panayotou would score the two goals for Hartford before being sent off with a red card in the 72nd minute. As things stand in Group 4 of the Jägermeister Cup, Rhode Island FC sits in first, Hartford claims second, and Detroit City sits in third. Those three all have three points each, but with goals scored being the tiebreaker, both Rhode Island and Hartford find themselves above Detroit. Westchester SC sits fourth, Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC in fifth, and Portland Hearts of Pine in sixth. Le Rouge continues on the road next weekend when they travel to Pennsylvania to face Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC. Detroit returns to Keyworth Stadium Saturday, June 21st, to take on The Miami FC. Watch Live: Detroit City FC vs. Toledo Villa FC
Detroit City FC hosts Toledo Villa FC on Wednesday evening at Keyworth Stadium for a midweek fixture between two sides looking for their first win of the season. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., and the match can be streamed for free on Le Rouge comes into Wednesday night off of a 0-0 draw with Union FC Macomb in the club's 2025 USL W League home opener. Detroit City FC was dangerous in the first 25', seeing two chances ring off the post, but allowed Macomb back into the game with their failure to convert chances into goals. Detroit City FC goalkeeper Allison LaPoint came up huge for her side in her second start of the season, making crucial saves in both halves to keep the score level at 0-0, and earn a point for Le Rouge. Toledo Villa has struggled to start its first season in the USL W League, starting 2025 off with two losses in its first two matches: 3-1 to Kalamazoo FC and 3-0 to Midwest United FC. Longtime fans of Detroit City FC will remember Toledo Villa FC from the 2019 NPSL season, when the Detroit City FC men's team defeated Toledo twice: 6-0 at historic Keyworth Stadium and 5-0 on the road. Three players rostered for Toledo Villa FC formerly played for Le Rouge: goalkeeper Deighton Wamer and forwards Ellie Pool and Rylee Clark. Pool made 21 appearances for Le Rouge, scoring five and assisting, while Clark made 10 appearances and Wamer nine. It's a quick turnaround for Detroit City FC, with the squad hosting Midwest United FC on Saturday night at historic Keyworth Stadium. A win in both matches for Le Rouge would be the kickstart to the season that's needed if David Dwahy and his side want to repeat as Central Conference champions in 2025. 'Aggressive' timeline revealed to build pro soccer stadium in Detroit by 2027
The Detroit City FC professional soccer club intends to start demolishing the old Southwest Detroit Hospital in July so that it can finish building a 15,000-capacity soccer stadium on the site by spring 2027. Two of the club's co-founders shared this schedule plan and other previously unreported details on the project during a Tuesday night, May 27, meeting of the Corktown Business Association. Club co-founder Sean Mann described the schedule, which calls for an early 2026 start to vertical construction, as an "aggressive timeline," but one necessary to get the stadium finished in time. The project also includes a large multilevel parking deck to go near the future stadium. "The goal is to get this done by the spring of '27," Mann said at the meeting, held at the Basilica of Ste. Anne de Detroit. He and fellow soccer club co-founder Todd Kropp said that this summer they plan to reveal final renderings for the stadium as well as the venue's official name. The new and privately financed soccer stadium will have a 15,000-person capacity, Mann said, or more than double the 7,200-person capacity of Keyworth Stadium in Hamtramck, where the team now plays. Detroit City FC has acquired about 17 acres for the stadium project, which is centered on what is currently the abandoned Southwest Detroit Hospital at 2401 20th St., near Detroit's Corktown and Mexicantown neighborhoods. The club officials said the basement of the 1974 hospital building right now is flooded with 1.5 million to 2 million gallons of water, a situation similar to what Ford Motor Co. faced when it began rehabbing Michigan Central Station in 2018. More: Demolition of empty Detroit hospital for future soccer stadium could start this summer They plan to begin filtering and draining the hospital basement soon, the club officials said, probably starting next week. Demolition of the hospital then could begin in July and end sometime this summer. Detroit City Council this month approved a $5.9 million Brownfield plan that would gradually reimburse Detroit City FC for the hospital's demolition costs over a period of 21 years. So far, that is the only public subsidy requested for the stadium project. The Brownfield plan is still subject to approval of the Michigan Strategic Fund. Mann said the final to-be-revealed stadium plans will also feature some commercial space, "so 20th Street is not a dead zone." The match can be streamed for free on The match is the second of a Saturday doubleheader at Keyworth Stadium, with the men's USL Championship side getting the party started at 4 p.m. against Eastern Conference leaders Charleston Battery FC. In Detroit City FC's first match of the 2025 USL W League season, the squad fell 2-1 on the road to AFC Ann Arbor. This was Le Rouge's first regular-season loss in the USL W League since losing 5-0 to Flint City AFC on June 17, 2023. Union FC Macomb is a new face in the USL W League for 2025. The club started play on the men's side in USL League Two last year and finished 7th in the Great Lakes Division. Union FC Macomb already has two matches under their belt this season, starting with a 2-1 loss on the road to AFC Ann Arbor on May 9, and rebounding with a 2-1 win at home against Kalamazoo FC on May 11. Detroit City FC supporters will be familiar with a few faces on the Union FC Macomb roster, with former Le Rouge players Shannon McCarthy, Lilley Bosley, and Kiera Billis all suiting up for them this summer.
