9 May 2025 16:48 DUBAI (ALETIHAD)The Al Raffa Police Station in Dubai surprised a shop owner by returning Dh123,000 worth of stolen medical products after apprehending a gang responsible for the theft. The gang had been stealing from a warehouse affiliated with the store over multiple periods, without the owner's knowledge or any reports of suspicious Ghalib Al Ghafli, Acting Director of Al Raffa Police Station, explained that the discovery of the crime resulted from the efforts of the 'Intelligence and Security Teams' Unit in collaboration with investigative officers at the noted that the unit was established to identify security gaps, gather intelligence, and address local issues, all aimed at enhancing safety and public trust in the police while reducing crime rates. 'The resolution of this case underscores the effectiveness of these ongoing efforts,' he added. Al Ghafli further stated, 'The 'Intelligence and Security Teams" unit has achieved several significant milestones in the Al Raffa Police Station area since its establishment in 2023. These include receiving 1,333 security tips, successfully resolving 738 cases, and earning 27 certificates of appreciation from various internal and external organizations for its efforts in combating crime and addressing negative trends.' Suspicious Activity Uncovers Crime Lieutenant Colonel Ali Al Awar, Head of the General Duty Section at Al Riffa Police Station and Head of the 'Intelligence and Security Teams' Unit, explained that while the team was carrying out their duties in collaboration with the station's investigations department to enhance security and safety in the jurisdiction area, they observed a gathering of suspicious individuals and took appropriate legal action against them. 'During the investigation, they discovered the individuals suspiciously had medical products and pills. When questioned about their origin and the large quantity, they confessed to stealing them from a medical supply store's warehouse multiple times without anyone noticing,' he continued. 'I Had No Knowledge'Al Awar confirmed that the "Intelligence and Security Teams" spoke with the store owner, who stated that neither he nor any staff knew the store was experiencing multiple thefts. He mentioned that after conducting an inventory of the stolen medical products, it was found that the total value of the thefts reached Dh123,000. Al Awar also indicated that upon reviewing the surveillance footage from the warehouse, the suspects were seen committing the thefts. 'Additionally, investigations revealed their involvement in other theft cases,' he concluded.

For the volunteers who made it happen, their contributions wouldn't have been possible without the local government's support. The Department of Community Development – Abu Dhabi (DCD) has recorded a significant 95% increase in volunteer hours from 873,787 in 2023 to 1,709,177 hours in 2024, according to recently disclosed figures. Hamda Alkaabi, a volunteer for programmes that promote social empowerment, lauded the DCD's commitment to 'cultivating a culture of giving and volunteerism'. Its efforts contribute not only to social well-being but also to the emirate's broader sustainable development goals, she said. Volunteering's economic impact on Abu Dhabi nearly doubled from Dh62 million in 2023 to Dh123 million in 2024, according to the DCD report. This rise, which is 98% year over year, highlighted volunteerism's growing role in the emirate's workforce development, economy, and service delivery.'Giving time, however, isn't enough,' Alkaabi told Aletihad. 'We also need to work together to improve the community. Making a meaningful contribution is made simple by the DCD's structure and support." Fatima Salem, a volunteer engaged in environmental and educational initiatives, agreed that the DCD's programmes and partnerships have made taking part in initiatives much easier. "The structured and inclusive framework established by the DCD has enabled volunteers like me to contribute meaningfully to Abu Dhabi's development agenda,' Salem said. 'By aligning individual efforts with strategic national priorities, the DCD ensures that each hour of volunteerism delivers tangible value to society."In 2024, volunteering took place in a variety of fields, such as healthcare, education, sports, social empowerment, the environment, and elder care. The number of registered volunteer opportunities increased to 2,527 in 2024, up from 1,185 in 2023. A network of 91 organisations, including government agencies, businesses, nonprofits, and grassroots volunteer groups, offered support to make these activities possible.

He said that the increasing engagement in volunteering reflects a genuine desire among individuals to drive positive change and contribute to sustainable development, and also praised the essential role played by volunteers in supporting the community, reinforcing Abu Dhabi's status as a global leader in volunteering. Al Balooshi said, "We view the Year of the Community as an opportunity to strengthen volunteering as a key value of social cohesion and unity, representing shared responsibility and meaningful contributions to society.
