Dubai: Scammer selling fake bracelets ordered to pay Dh90,000 in damages
A Dubai commercial court recently ruled against an Asian man who deceived a luxury retailer by selling fake fancy bracelets claiming to be high-end originals. The court ordered him to pay Dh90,000 in damages. The scam happened last year, when the fraudster approached the retailer at its Naif branch, claiming to sell three premium-brand bracelets for a total of Dh125,000. Trusting his claims, the company completed the purchase, only to later discover — through expert evaluation — that the items were counterfeit and worth just Dh35,000. A forensic report revealed that one bracelet carried a forged hallmark. Based on its 41 grams of 18-karat gold, its true value is estimated at only Dh15,000. The other two pieces were also confirmed as imitations with no links to the luxury brands the seller had falsely claimed. Based on forensic laboratory analysis, the court ruled that the defendant committed commercial fraud, misleading the retailer and causing financial loss. The court ordered the scammer to repay his victim Dh90,000 plus 5 per cent interest until full payment was made. Legal experts say the ruling highlights Dubai's firm stance against fraud in the luxury market. The decision also reinforces consumer protection and the city's reputation as a global trade hub.

Booming UAE e-commerce market spurs changes in distribution business
Revenue in the UAE's e-commerce market is projected to grow at 8.39 per cent from $33.97 billion (Dh125 billion) in 2025 to $46.88 billion (Dh172 billion) by 2029, according to a report by a global online market intelligence provider, as consumers in the UAE are enjoying the benefits of e-commerce and digital payment. Sale and distribution of goods – both wholesale and retail – are fast shifting to the online space due to a change in consumer behaviour in digital payments that is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.80 per cent from $80.37 billion (Dh295 billion) this year to $134.80 billion (Dh495 billion) in 2029, according to a research report.
