The film starred Rishi Kapoor, Meenakshi Seshadri, Sunny Deol, and Amrish Puri in key roles. Its most iconic and unforgettable dialogues like 'Tarikh par Tarik' and 'Dhai kilo ka haath' are still etched in audience minds and hearts. The film follows on the journey of a housemaid being assaulted in the place of work, as she fights for injustice with the support of her husband and Govind, a determined lawyer. Made in an estimated budget of Rs 2.50 crore, the film went on to become a blockbuster and earned Rs 11 crore worldwide. The primary reason behind its success was Sunny Deol's terrific portrayal of Advocate Govind Srivastava. Even though Deol appeared majorly in the second half, he captivated viewers with his spectacular performance and unforgettable dialogues. Whereas, Rishi Kapoor wanted Sridevi to portray the role of Damini. Moreover, the role was offered to Madhuri Dixit too, who turned it down due to date issues. Later, Meenakshi Seshadri was then finalised to play Damini. Damini was the second of the third collaboration between Rajkumar Santoshi, Sunny Deol, Meenakshi Seshadri, and Amrish Puri with the other two being Ghayal and Ghatak released in 1990 and 1996.
