Diarna Fair showcases women's handmade products

To help market handmade goods by Egyptian women, Diarna Fair is currently running from 13 to 28 February 2025 at Cairo Festival Mall in the Cairo eastern satellite town of al-Tagammu al-Khamis (Fifth Settlement). The Fair opening was attended by Maya Morsy, Egypt's Minister of Social Solidarity; Manal Awad, Egypt's Minister of Local Development; Nabila Makram, Head of the Technical Secretariat for the National Alliance for Civil Development Work; Hala al-Said, Advisor to the President, as well as public and media figures, along with a group of businessmen and investors. Egypt's National Council for Women participated in the opening ceremony, represented by its Chairperson deputy, Dr Nesrin al-Boghdady. Dr Baghdady highlighted the importance of Egyptian women's participation in the development of handmade products, noting that the exhibition is a real opportunity to empower women economically and support traditional goods. She praised the quality of the products on display which, she said, reflect the skill of Egyptian artisans in various fields and showcase the value of the products created by those women. The opening was held to the tunes of Sinai songs and the ululation of exhibitors from all over Egypt. The fair hosts more than 400 male and female exhibitors, showcasing their handmade, traditional products. The guest of honour is Sinai, with this round of Diarna casting special light on various traditional and heritage Sinai products, in addition to other traditional handmade items such as arabesque woodwork, copperware, and glass crafts. On sale at the fair are also goods on demand in the holy Muslim month of Ramadan, which begins 1 March this year; the Ramadan goods include home decorations, and traditional garments and jewellery. This year's edition is held in partnership with Cairo Festival City Mall under sponsorship of AlexBank 'Intesa Sanpaolo Group', Sawiris Foundation for Social Development, and Drosos Foundation. 'Diarna', literal for 'Our Homes', started off in 1958, sponsored by the Ministry of Social Affairs—today the Ministry of Social Solidarity—under the name 'Productive Families Fair'. The aim was to market products of cottage or home-based industries in order to help families increase their income. It has steadily grown, today featuring products from all of Egypt's 28 governorates, and has expanded to include goods produced by craftsmen and micro industries, also a few public sector companies that sell at discounted prices personal and home products in high demand by the public. It now opens in various cities across the country at different times of the year, generating good revenue.
