ROMA V MILAN: MATCH PREVIEW
The penultimate matchday in Serie A 2024/25 sees AC Milan take on Roma at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday 18 May (20:45 CEST kick-off). Both sides are chasing European football and go into it following a busy and rigorous few weeks. It's a game that will be poised on a knife edge between two sides that know each other well and faced off in the Coppa Italia at the start of April. Let's get ready for kick-off with our Match Preview. LATEST FROM MILANELLO I rossoneri, reduci dalla sconfitta nella finale di Coppa Italia contro il Bologna, tornano a concentrarsi sul The Rossoneri are back in league action following the defeat to Bologna in the Coppa Italia final. AC Milan are still in the race for European football and, although trailing as it stands, are still in with a shout, but every point matters. The objective is to rediscover a bit of solidity, calmness and compactness for these last two games of the season, which will require maximum concentration because it is still all to play for. The trip to the Olimpico will be a tough one, but it is a chance for a bit of redemption. There are a few fitness issues that need to be monitored, while Leão and Pulisic remain key components of the Diavolo's forward line. We might see some rotation, but the Rossoneri will likely stick with the 3-4-3 formation with Jović or Abraham through the middle. LATEST FROM ROMA Roma's aim against AC Milan is to consolidate their position in the European places. At the time of writing, the Giallorossi are in sixth place on 63 points following a long unbeaten run that relaunched their European ambitions. Ranieri's chosen system is a dynamic 3-5-2, with a highly interchangeable and mobile front two. With Paulo Dybala out injured, the task of playmaking falls to Matías Soulé. The game against the Rossoneri is a big chance for Roma to confirm the progress seen until the defeat to Atalanta last time out as they chase Europe next season. Advertisement Ranieri on Roma v AC Milan and its importance in their hunt for Europe in his pre-match press conference: "It's really important; we want to do it. I think back to when I took charge, to the boys' sacrifice, hunger, determination, and to the fans. This is so important for everyone. We'll try to do the best we game. 500 games in Serie A? I'm happy." PRE-MATCH NUMBERS Roma are the team against whom AC Milan have won the most matches in Serie A history: 80 victories for the Rossoneri in 179 encounters, with 54 draws and 45 wins for the Giallorossi. AC Milan are unbeaten in their last ten league games against Roma (6W, 4D), with the Giallorossi's last Serie A victory dating back to 27 October 2019 (2-1 at the Olimpico) Christian Pulisic (11 goals in Serie A 2024/25) is just one goal away from matching his best scoring season in the Top-5 European leagues (12 goals in 2023/24); including assists (nine in the current league), the American could become only the fourth AC Milan player to reach double figures for goal involvements in a single Serie A season in the last 20 years, after Zlatan Ibrahimovic (14G+11A in 2010/11), Ronaldinho (12G+14A in 2009/10), and Kaká (15G+11A in 2007/08). MN: ‘Transforms himself' – why Milan are confident the goals will come for Gimenez
Santiago Gimenez has scored a respectable three goals since joining AC Milan in the winter mercato, but there is belief that the Mexican can start scoring more. In a season where disappointment is almost everywhere, the signing of a big-money striker in January seemed to be the spark for better. Partnering this with the fact that the club won the Supercoppa Italiana earlier in the month, spirits were lifting. However, the Mexican has struggled to really hit a patch of consistency – an issue which has plagued his teammates as well. There are no signs of him giving up on things though, or vice versa, with the club placing their faith elsewhere. In fact, it could not be further from the truth. Gimenez is being heavily backed by the club to shoot himself into stardom and bring the Diavolo with him. So, this is why Sergio Conceicao is considering completely reshuffling his pack to suit the needs of the former Feyenoord man. For the club, as Milan News write, the striker has had a difficult start to life, and after struggling with a niggle in his opening weeks, he is yet to actually reach his full level. However, it has still remained clear that he presents a serious danger in the opposition box, 'transforming himself' in some way. Of course, there are improvements to be made, perhaps with his work level and his work with his back to goal. Nevertheless, the base for a star is there, and now, with time on the training pitch, the club believe they will see this more.

MN: ‘Credit to the mercato' – Milan leaders ‘appreciated' positive atmosphere at Milan-Roma
AC Milan steamed to victory against AS Roma in the Coppa Italia on Wednesday night – the management are over the moon with the result, and there is a big reason why. Things are not going well domestically for Milan this season, this is something known by all parties and is a large reason for the mercato investment in January. However, there is still a lot of time to rectify things, and the Rossoneri have made a few steps towards that in January. The Supercoppa Italiana success kickstarted the month, but inconsistencies between then and now frustrated fans. Against Roma though, there were no signs of this Diavolo, instead they were clinical. Then, they were further empowered by the new signings Santiago Gimenez and Joao Felix, with the duo even combining to score the final Milan goal of the evening. In fact, their performances and the response to them were greatly 'appreciated' by the management, as Milan News write. With the manner of both debuts, San Siro was back to its best, with fans on side supporting the team rather than voicing frustrations, and the credit for this lies with the actions taken during the mercato. Frustrations about sustainability have often boiled over, but with the club putting their money where their mouth is, the frustrations have settled slightly, and support was voiced once again.

TIME MACHINE: AC MILAN v INTER
It was a very tense Derby with high stakes: AC Milan had 62 points and Inter 60, meaning that a victory is worth at least half the Scudetto. The atmosphere was hyped up too: the Rossoneri were playing at home and the fans have been waiting a long time to welcome back the former player Leonardo, the Nerazzurri coach for a few months now. It is impossible to forget the Derby of 2 April 2011, MD 31 of Serie A - it was practically a film. The season had come to a standstill, quite literally because there was an international break in between. A long, complicated journey, full of excitment and hope. Allegri's team was ready to play, but not exactly serene. The moment was very delicate, the home draw against Bari (1-1) and the subsequent defeat in Palermo (0-1) weakened our advantage at the top and also left Ibrahimović off the squad due to disqualification. Their all-time rivals were right on their heels, dreaming of overtaking them. The team spirit could make the difference, as well as motivation. This was our formation on the pitch: the Pato-Robinho duo in attack, behind Boateng, van Bommel-Seedorf-Gattuso in the midfield, Pirlo not even on the bench, Abate-Nesta-Thiago Silva-Zambrotta in defence, Abbiati in goal. Hours and days were spent imagining how it could go, how our tactics could go wrong, but instead the Diavolo needed only 47 seconds to find the opener: a Pato-Gattuso link-up, Robinho drew Júlio César out, Pato picked up the rebound and scored with a powerful right footer. San Siro went crazy with cheers and celebrations. Then Seedorf's shot was blocked by Maicon's wide arm in the box, Pazzini's attempt was saved by Abbiati, and van Bommel hit the crossbar from the distance. Inter attacked with danger in the next phase: Thiago Motta swept in from a corner and Abbiati's miracle save was just millimetres away from the goal line, Cambiaso caused a mistake by Eto'o, who failed to hit the target from close range. A big scare. All momentum was reversed when Chivu received a red card. The cards on the table changed; the Diavolo retook the initiative and found the second goal thanks to Pato's double, skillful in deflecting Abate's creative assist with his head. In the added time, it was bittersweet as Cassano scored a penalty, but then sent off not long after. The final whistle. AC Milan enjoyed the win, gaining a decisive advantage which propelled us to the AC Milan WhatsApp channel is available: follow us!
