Orange Morocco Partners with Ericsson to Accelerate 5G Deployment

Doha – Orange Morocco has signed a strategic agreement with Ericsson to modernize and expand its network infrastructure, preparing for the introduction of 5G technology in the country. The partnership, announced on Thursday, aligns with Morocco's Digital 2030 strategy aimed at advancing the country's digital transformation, according to a press release from the company. The collaboration will enable Orange Morocco to integrate cutting-edge technologies, specifically Ericsson's dual-mode 5G Core and Cloud Native Infrastructure Solution, optimized for hosting cloud-native 5G applications, the statement indicates. This modernization will increase the operator's network capacity and enhance customer experience while building a scalable network architecture for 5G implementation, according to the announcement. Through this strategic partnership, Orange Morocco will introduce the 'Ericsson Cloud Core Policy Controller,' ensuring high scalability, improved network resilience, and new business models, as specified in the company's communication. The telecommunications operator will also expand its network with additional IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) and Ericsson Packet Core sites to strengthen Voice over LTE (VoLTE) services and provide highly reliable 4G and 5G services, the release states. 'Orange Morocco places innovation and customer satisfaction at the heart of its strategy,' said Hendrik Kasteel, CEO of Orange Morocco. 'This partnership with Ericsson reinforces our commitment to offering an increasingly powerful, reliable network adapted to the growing digital needs of Moroccans.' Majda Lahlou Kassi, President of Ericsson Morocco and VP Ericsson West Africa and Southern Africa, added: 'At Ericsson, our customers' success is central to our mission. We are proud to support Orange Morocco in this major transformation, which aims to respond to rapidly evolving connectivity needs.' The modernization also includes improving automation and orchestration of cloud-native infrastructure through upgrades to Ericsson Network Manager, Orchestrator, and Network IQ Statistics software already used by Orange Morocco to orchestrate its network, as detailed in the announcement. This partnership continues a 20-year cooperation between Orange Morocco and Ericsson, demonstrating the Moroccan operator's commitment to anticipating the country's future connectivity needs and strengthening its role as a pillar of national digital development, according to the companies. According to the National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ANRT), the commercial launch of 5G in Morocco is scheduled for early November 2025, just before the start of the Africa Cup of Nations. Implementation will begin in major cities before gradually extending to less dense and more remote areas. The Morocco Digital 2030 plan aims to achieve 25% population coverage by the end of 2025, increasing to 70% by 2030. The ambitious goal is to ensure nationwide coverage for the 2030 FIFA World Cup. The arrival of 5G will significantly impact various sectors, including intelligent transportation, home automation, and productivity in next-generation industrial units, according to industry analysts. Agriculture, public services, and the digitalization of administrative procedures will also receive a strong boost. A key element in this process is the strategic agreement signed in late March between Maroc Telecom and Inwi to accelerate the deployment of fiber optics and 5G throughout the country through infrastructure sharing via two joint ventures: Tower Co for 5G and FiberCo for fiber optics. Welsh College Launches New HE Programmes in Partnership with UK's Largest Awarding Body

Leading-edge new higher education programmes have been unveiled by Coleg Cambria. The college – based in Deeside, Northop, Llysfasi and Wrexham – launched a raft of courses to begin this September in partnership with Pearson learning group, the UK's largest awarding body. They include Hospitality, Digital Marketing and Enterprise, and Esports. It comes after Cambria designed a Higher Technical Skills Strategy to enhance access and participation, encourage curriculum development and innovation, and forge partnerships within multiple industries to plug gaps in expertise and experience regionally. Cambria's Dean of Access and Higher Education (HE) Emma Hurst said: 'These new higher education qualifications have been carefully developed in collaboration with industry leaders to ensure graduates are equipped with the practical skills and knowledge employers are looking for. 'By aligning academic learning with real-world demands, we're empowering students to be job-ready, innovative, and at the forefront of their sectors, supporting not only their immediate career progression but also opening doors to promotion and new professional opportunities.' HE Partnerships and Compliance Manager Donna Pritchard said they will also continue to promote Digital 2030 – digital skills, confidence and innovation in teaching and learning; equipping learners so they can use rapidly evolving technologies to their full potential, including Artificial Intelligence (AI). 'We want Higher Technical Skills to become a priority within employer advisory boards and inform curriculum development and co-creation, ensuring programmes are tailored to meet the evolving demands of the local labour market,' said Donna. 'Our vision is to remove barriers to education and help upskill in areas of demand whilst targeting pivotal issues such as the Welsh language, sustainability and net zero – we are successfully working towards that with Pearson and other stakeholders.'

ANRT Mandates Fiber Optic Network Sharing Among Telecom Operators

Doha – Morocco's National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ANRT) issued a groundbreaking decision on March 4, requiring telecom operators to share their fiber optic infrastructure. The decision, referenced as DG/05/2025, establishes new technical and pricing guidelines for infrastructure sharing among the country's three major operators: Maroc Telecom, Orange, and Inwi. Operators can function in two distinct capacities under the new framework: as Infrastructure Operators (IO) or Commercial Operators (CO). Infrastructure Operators must lease their networks to competitors, while Commercial Operators can provide services using their competitors' infrastructure, even in areas where they lack their own network coverage. The regulation mandates Infrastructure Operators to ensure non-discriminatory access and publish their pricing structures, including after-sales services. To streamline operations, the decision requires the implementation of web services to automate processes between Infrastructure and Commercial Operators, particularly for ordering and after-sales support. This initiative aims to avoid the complications previously experienced with copper network (ADSL) sharing and accelerate fiber optic deployment across Morocco. The decision shatters the decades-long current market dominance of Maroc Telecom, the historic operator. This shift comes as Mohamed Benchaaboun takes the helm, succeeding Abdeslam Ahizoune, whose 27-year tenure was marred by allegations of anti-competitive practices and monopolistic control that hindered sectoral growth. Read also: Morocco Speeds Up Technical Studies on Infrastructure to Prepare for World Cup 2030 Inwi has already taken the lead in implementing these changes, opening access to its FTTH (Fiber to the Home) infrastructure to competitors as of March 13. The other operators are expected to follow suit promptly. The regulatory change aligns with Morocco's Digital 2030 strategy, which targets increasing fiber-eligible households from 1.5 million in 2022 to 5.6 million by 2030. Currently, fiber subscribers number less than one million. The initiative is backed by substantial investment plans totaling MAD 20 billion ($2 billion). While current end-user pricing remains regulated by ANRT, industry sources indicate that gradual price reductions are anticipated as network coverage expands and infrastructure investments are optimized. The sharing mechanism is designed to prevent redundant infrastructure investments in the same areas, allowing operators to focus on different zones while maintaining service availability through infrastructure sharing. The decision also paves the way for the upcoming 5G network deployment, which requires robust fiber optic infrastructure. Industry observers expect 5G tender announcements during the upcoming GITEX Africa event in Marrakech next month. As of February, all operators have published their new technical and pricing offers on their respective websites, complying with ANRT's requirements. The measure is expected to enhance competition, expand national coverage, and eventually lead to more competitive pricing for consumers while optimizing the substantial infrastructure investments planned for the sector.
