Teen fined RM400 for smoking in court complex
SEREMBAN: A teenager was fined RM400 by the magistrate's court here today for smoking within the court premises.
Magistrate Nurul Azuin Mohd Talhah handed down the sentence after the 18-year-old pleaded guilty to the offence during proceedings held behind the Special Traffic Court.
According to the charge, the youth who is classified as a juvenile under the law was found smoking in a no-smoking area at a government facility.
The offence took place at 10.02am on Nov 18 last year at the Seremban Court Complex.
He was charged under Subsection 17(1) of the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024 (Act 852), read together with Paragraph 3(9) of the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health (Declaration of No-Smoking Areas or Places) Order 2024.
The court ordered the teen to serve a week in jail if he failed to pay the fine.
According to the facts of the case, the accused was seen smoking within the Seremban Court Complex by an Assistant Environmental Health Officer (PPKP) from the Seremban District Health Office.
The officer approached the teen and informed him of the offence, after which the teenager discarded the cigarette he was holding.
The prosecution was conducted by PPKP Vivig Dinesh Vigane Swaran, while the accused was unrepresented.
