‘Lilo & Stitch' Review: Disney's Live-Action Remake Will Engage the Kids, Exhaust the Parents

Disney's insatiable quest to mine its own IP continues with this live-action remake of an animated film that premiered a mere 23 years ago. But hey, that's enough time for a new generation of potential fans to be born while tapping into the nostalgia of those who grew up watching not only the original movie but also its three direct-to-video sequels and three television series. Creatively, there's no real reason for this version of Lilo & Stitch to exist, especially since the film's version of Stitch is necessarily animated as well. But commercially, that's a whole different matter, assuming Trump's tariffs don't prevent toy stores from being fully stocked with the plush toy version that will be on many children's wish list for Santa. More from The Hollywood Reporter 'Lilo & Stitch' Star Courtney B. Vance Teases Box Office Opponent 'Mission: Impossible': "I Don't Think You Can Compete With Stitch, Tom" 'Black Mirror' Season 7 Trailer and Episodic Details Revealed 'Lilo & Stitch' Live-Action Remake Makes Splash With Full Trailer Directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, following in the tradition of acclaimed indie filmmakers (Marcel the Shell With Shoes On) graduating to the big-budget leagues (this film cost a reported $100 million), the live-action Lilo & Stitch is faithful enough to the original to please traditionalists and tweaked enough to feel somewhat fresh. The most notable change is the emotional deepening of the relationship between the 6-year-old Hawaiian orphan Lilo (Maia Kealoha, bringing real heart and sparkling personality to the role) and her older sister, Nani (Sydney Elizabeth Agudong), who's struggling to maintain her guardianship amid financial difficulties and Lilo's rebellious behavior. The story begins with a sequence set on a planet ruled by the United Galactic Federation and its leader, the Grand Councilwoman (Hannah Waddingham, just as imposing in animated form as in real life), featuring the sort of ugly CGI animation that makes you long for the human actors to appear. That's where we're introduced to Stitch (voiced by Chris Sanders, reprising his role from the original), a destruction-loving, genetically engineered creature created by mad scientist Dr. Jumba Jookiba (Zach Galifianakis). Threatened with exile, Stitch manages to escape and winds up on Earth — Hawaii, to be specific — where he's pursued by Jumba and Agent Pleakley (Billy Magnussen), who's assigned to chaperone him. Shortly after arriving, the duo manage to assume human form, providing the opportunity for the two actors to showcase their considerable physical comedy skills as their characters awkwardly adapt to their new bodies. Meanwhile, the koala-like, very blue Stitch winds up in an animal shelter, where he's surprisingly mistaken for a dog (one of the film's running gags) and gets adopted by Lilo. The little girl and the adorable but rambunctious creature get off to a rough start, not helped by the latter's propensity for wreaking havoc wherever he goes. But their bond continues to deepen as she teaches him that, wait for it, 'Ohana means family.' Along the way, there are enough madcap events, fast-paced chases and dangerous situations to pad the film's running time to 108 minutes compared to the original's peppy 85. For adults, a little of the visual chaos will go a long way, with Stitch, cute as he is, not exactly E.T. in terms of appeal. But younger viewers should eat it all up, and those weaned on the original film will appreciate the numerous shout-outs, including supporting turns by Tia Carrere, who voiced Nani in the original, and Jason Scott Lee, who voiced Nani's surfer friend David (here played by Kaipo Dudoit). There are several new characters as well, such as David's feisty grandmother (an amusing Amy Hill, another veteran of the franchise) and Cobra Bubbles (Courtney B. Vance), a federal agent attempting to track down Stitch. (And yes, the character's name is a callback to the social worker in the original.) In both incarnations, Lilo & Stitch is not in the first rank of Disney family films, as evidenced by the fact that this remake was originally slated to go direct-to-streaming. But that should hardly matter, with this version likely to clean up at the box office at the start of the busy summer season. Does ‘Lilo & Stitch' Have A Post-Credits Scene? Why You Should Stay Seated

Lilo & Stitch (2025) Disney's nostalgic Lilo & Stitch live-action remake is now playing in theaters. If you're headed to see the film on the big screen, you might be wondering whether there's a mid- or end-credits scene that continues Lilo and Nani's story or teases a sequel. Directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, the film remakes the original 2002 Lilo & Stitch, which spawned several spinoff series and the popular TV show Lilo & Stitch: The Series. The movie follows the unlikely friendship between a lonely Hawaiian girl named Lilo and a dog-like alien named Stitch, who she hopes will mend her broken family. What she doesn't know is that Stitch was genetically engineered to be a force of destruction, and he's being tracked by aliens and social workers. Lilo & Stitch (2025) Eight-year-old Maia Kealoha makes her film debut as Lilo Pelekai, while original Lilo & Stitch writer and director Chris Sanders reprises his voice role as Stitch. Original cast members Tia Carrere, Amy Hill, and Jason Scott Lee also return, joining newcomers Elizabeth Agudong, Billy Magnussen, Hannah Waddingham, Courtney B. Vance, and Zach Galifianakis. The live-action Lilo & Stitch is expected to make a big splash at the box office over Memorial Day weekend, with Deadline predicting a $275 million global debut following more than $20 million in domestic presales. Read on to find out whether it's worth staying in your seat through the credits. Lilo & Stitch (2025) While Lilo & Stitch doesn't have a post-credits scene, it does feature a mid-credits moment that plays during the credits, one fans will definitely want to stick around for. Warning: Spoiler ahead for Lilo & Stitch's mid-credits scene. Lilo & Stitch (2025) In the Lilo & Stitch mid-credits scene, viewers see Nani heading off to college, where she'll be studying marine biology at UC San Diego. Meanwhile, Lilo is living with their neighbors, Tūtū and David. Thankfully, Nani can still visit home thanks to the portal gun, allowing her to sneak in some much-needed cuddles with Lilo. Back at the house, Cobra Bubbles stops by to check in on Stitch and Pleakley. Disney has not yet officially greenlit a sequel to its live-action Lilo & Stitch movie, but based on early box office predictions and the film's success, there's a strong chance a second installment is on the horizon. In fact, in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, one executive said Disney is so confident in Lilo & Stitch that the studio is already considering sequels. 'It feels like it's going to work very well, and it's the kind of property that lends itself to more,' said Disney Entertainment Co-Chairman Alan Bergman, who oversees the company's film business. Lilo & Stitch is playing in theaters. Watch the official trailer below.

‘Lilo & Stitch' Reviews Are Positive, But Some Critics Have Big Issues

Maia Kealoha and Stitch (voice of Chris Sanders) in "Lilo & Stitch." Disney's Lilo & Stitch is new in theaters and not all critics are lauding the live-action adaptation of the 2002 animated classic. Rated PG, Lilo & Stitch plays in Thursday previews and opens in theaters worldwide on Friday. The official logline of the movie reads, 'Lilo & Stitch is the wildly funny and touching story of a lonely Hawaiian girl and the fugitive alien who helps to mend her broken family.' Chris Sanders, who directed the animated version of Lilo & Stitch and voiced the blue furry alien in the movie, reprises the role of Stitch for the new version, while Maia Kealoha makes her feature film debut as Lilo. Lilo & Stitch also stars Sydney Elizebeth Agudong, Billy Magnussen, Tia Carrere, Hannah Waddingham, Courtney B. Vance and Zach Galifianakis. As of this publication, Lilo & Stitch has earned a 72% 'fresh' rating from Rotten Tomatoes critics based on 90 reviews. The RT Critics Consensus for the film reads, 'Recapturing the adorable charm of the original if not quite matching its rambunctious sense of imagination, Lilo & Stitch emerges out of the crate as one of the better live-action remakes of a Disney classic.' The RT Popcornmeter score based on verified user ratings is still pending. Among the top critics on RT giving Lilo & Stitch a 'fresh' review is Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter, who writes, 'For adults, a little of the visual chaos will go a long way, with [Stitch], cute as he is, not exactly E.T. in terms of appeal. Younger viewers should eat it all up, and those weaned on the original film will appreciate the numerous shout-outs.' Brandon Yu of The New York Times also gives Lilo & Stitch a 'fresh' review with some reservations, writing on RT, 'There's just enough to make for a moderately fun, mostly serviceable and often adorable revamp that will probably satisfy fans of the original.' Maureen Lee Lenker of Entertainment Weekly screened the 3-D version of Lilo & Stitch, writing in her 'fresh' review on RT, 'Now 3-D rather than mere pen and ink, [Stitch] looks instantly huggable, so much so that I can't even begrudge Disney the thousands of stuffed Stitch toys this is bound to sell.' Among the detractors of Lilo & Stitch on RT is TIME Magazine's Barry Levitt, who writes in his 'rotten' review, 'The Disney Live-Action Industrial Complex has made a lot of strange decisions... but fundamentally misunderstanding what makes one of their most universally adored characters worthwhile may be its most egregious.' Also giving Lilo & Stitch a 'rotten' rating on RT is IndieWire's Kate Erbland, who writes, 'The heart of this story remains firmly intact, but there's something about seeing it rendered in live-action that takes away its inherent magic. It's harder to fall into, much tougher to lose yourself in.' Peter Debruge of Variety also gives the film a 'rotten' rating on RT, writing, 'Somehow, Lilo & Stitch has lost its unpredictable sense of anarchy in the retelling. For all intents and purposes, it could be a Hawaii-set sitcom.' Directed by Dean Fleischer Camp (Marcel the Shell with Shoes On), Lilo & Stitch plays in Thursday previews before opening in theaters worldwide on Friday.

‘Lilo & Stitch' Reactions Call It Disney's Best Remake

If you've been thinking about seeing the live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch, good news: it's apparently pretty decent! Reactions for the film hit social media on Saturday night, and those who've seen it were fairly warm to it. In addition to being surprisingly good, impressions consider it the best live-action remake of Disney's erratic bunch over the years. We've gathered some of those thoughts here for you to get an idea of what to expect ahead of more substantial reviews in the next few days. #LiloAndStitch is the BIGGEST SURPRISE of the year and easily the BEST Disney live action remake yet. Dean Fleischer Camp crafts a joyous family adventure that captures the chaos and charm of the original. It's also OUT OF THIS WORLD HILARIOUS and HEARTWARMING with a star-making… — Daniel Baptista • The Movie Podcast (@dbapz) May 18, 2025 #LiloandStitch is a cute reimagining that mostly captures the original's spirit through a modern-day lens. Lilo and Nani's relationship feels even more heartfelt. It's still raw, real, and central to the story's emotional core. Of course Stitch brings hilarious chaos. — (@IamMichaelJLee) May 18, 2025 #LiloandStitch was heartwarming & really gave the official film more depth to Lilo & Nani. Maia Kealoha is a STAR! The Stitch was so well made. I never imagined in 23 years they'd be able to merge animation w/ live action this well. It was magical. Very sweet. — Laura ลอร'า 劳拉 🍥 (@lsirikul) May 18, 2025 Some supporting characters are underserved (though I like some new additions), but #LiloandStitch 2025 maintains the original's strong emotional core, with a greater focus on the bond (and tensions) between Lilo and Nani. It's got genuine heart in a way some Disney remakes lack. — Eric Goldman (@TheEricGoldman) May 18, 2025 #LiloandStitch is the best Disney live-action to date. Seeing Stitch in his live-action form on the big screen brings on a huge wave of nostalgia. Tons of laughter and heartwarming moments. The film hits similar beats to the original, as well added something new flavors. — Wendy Lee Szany (@WendyLeeSzany) May 18, 2025 Having lived in Hawaii, my childhood island nostalgia came flooding back ! This is by far one of Disney's best! From the music, Hawaiian culture homage and a fantabulous star turn from Newcomer Maia Kealoha #LiloandStitch will remind everyone why family is important and should… — Carla Renata (@TheCurvyCritic) May 18, 2025 Directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, the remake follows the plot of the animated Lilo & Stitch from 2002: Stitch, a genetically engineered alien that loves making chaos, crash lands in Hawaii on Earth and pretends to be a dog adopted by kid orphan Lilo. As the pair bond and make mischief around town, alien cops and Stitch's creator Jumbaa arrive on Earth looking to capture him. Disney's been trying to get this remake off the ground for years and put a lot of marketing behind it. Its teaser trailer had 158 million views in 24 hours, the second-highest for a Disney remake teaser behind The Lion King in 2018. Disney reportedly paused its plans to adapt Tangled for live-action owing to the tepid reception to the Snow White remake. If the numbers for Lilo & Stitch are stronger, the studio may rethink those plans—we'll find out on May 23.
