Madera Community Hospital is reopening after two-year closure. Here are the details
Madera Community Hospital will reopen to patients Tuesday morning, state legislators announced Monday.
'This is a victory for healthcare access, economic stability and the well-being of our region,' State Sen. Anna Caballero and Assemblymember Esmeralda Soria said in a statement. 'This re-opening signifies the restoration of hope, security and lifesaving medical services for the people of Madera and beyond.'
The hospital will begin seeing patients at 10 a.m., putting an end to a more than two-year closure that began in December 2022 and led patients — many of them from low-income households — to seek emergency care in neighboring counties, where emergency rooms had to adapt to a surge of patients from Madera. The closure also 'displaced over 900 health care workers,' the release says.

'When it was announced that Madera Community Hospital was closing, people in our community were scared, they were facing unknowns about where the closest hospital would be in case they needed life-threatening care,' Soria said. 'Today, we can say that we have restored access to healthcare for the residents of Madera and our neighboring communities. Madera Community Hospital not only opens its doors to the community today, but it also brings peace of mind.'
More than one year of federal court proceedings followed the hospital's declaration of bankruptcy in January 2023. Deals with potential reopening partners fell through multiple times.
Caballero and Soria worked together at the state level to secure rescue funding for the facility, pushing the Distressed Hospital Loan Program through the legislature in 2023. That program awarded Madera hospital a $57 million zero-interest loan to help it reopen, which became a local political issue.
American Advanced Management (AAM), the Modesto-based hospital management firm reopening the hospital said it has an updated workflow that will 'reduce wait times and overall patient outcomes.'
Additionally, the hospital will offer 'a fully-equipped ICU' and medical-surgical unit, among other services.
AAM has announced that the hospital will be reopening without a maternity ward. The hospital's reopening partner has said its main focus will be financial sustainability before it decides whether it can add maternity services.
'Healthcare access is not a privilege—it is a fundamental right,' Caballero said in the release. 'No family should ever have to wonder where to go in a medical emergency. With today's reopening, Madera families can once again have the quality care they deserve, right in their own community.'
