Starbucks announces winners of their Regional Barista Championships

The winner of this coveted title goes on to compete in the Starbucks EMEA Championships in London. Training to become a Starbucks partner -as the company's baristas are called - is no simple affair. These passionate coffee lovers undergo many months immersing themselves in coffee knowledge and lore, with a hands-on curriculum crafted by the world renowned Starbucks Global Academy. 'We love recognising the hard work our partners invest in finetuning their craft,' says Ishan Natalie, Coffee Excellence Lead at Rand Capital Coffee Licensee Holder Starbucks SA. 'That's why the District Barista Championships are always such an exciting event.' Ishan explains that the competition was introduced by Starbucks several years before the company entered the South African market in 2016, when it was eagerly embraced by local partners. The competition starts with the Store Championships, with winners from this leg going on to compete in the District Championships, which took place in March. The Regional Championships, which were held in May, saw partners from the KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape and Central region (comprising Gauteng and the Free State) will battle it out for a chance to take part in the National Barista Championships in June. The winner of this coveted title goes on to compete in the Starbucks EMEA Championships in London, where 37-46 other national champions from the European, Middle East and Africa will showcase their Coffee Knowledge, Creativity and Passion in the hopes of being named the Starbucks EMEA brand ambassador – and, more importantly, have a chance to compete in the Global Championships. This year, 83 partners from Starbucks' 72 stores around the country raised their hands to take part in the championships. Each was expected to show their expertise in different categories, including latte art, coffee quality and storytelling, where they share their knowledge about the beverage.

HBCU head coach doubles as umpire

Florida A&M head football coach James Colzie III loves sports. He was a star athlete at Florida State, playing both football and baseball. The coach of the HBCU powerhouse from the SWAC recently went viral because of how he likes to spend his spare time pursuing his passion. Earlier this month, while FAMU was on spring break, Colzie made a trip to Starkville, Mississippi, for a surprising reason. He took on the role of umpire during Mississippi State's three-game softball series against Auburn. Colzie worked at third base on Saturday, first base on Sunday, and behind home plate on Monday for the finale. Colzie III's connection to the game is rooted in his family as well. His father, James Colzie, has been the softball assignor for Dade County Public Schools in Florida since 1975 and has served as an athletic director since 1991. In recognition of his contributions to high school athletics, Colzie was inducted into the Florida High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame in 2020. His father's Hall of Fame bio reads in part, 'The Miami, Florida native began his officiating career in basketball, softball, and volleyball. To present, Colzie has officiated over 4,000 FHSAA contests and has appeared on a crew in 290 District Championships, 270 Regional Championships, and 36 State Championship games. His commitment and perseverance led him to become the Greater Miami Athletic Conference Commissioner of Commissions, where he played an instrumental role in recruiting and retaining officials and became a member of the FHSAA Officials Advisory Committee (1990-95).' In 2024 Colzie led the Florida A&M Rattlers football team to a 7-5 overall record and a 5-3 mark in the SWAC, finishing second in the SWAC East. FAMU finished with a 4-1 record at Bragg Memorial Stadium. Despite a challenging 1-4 record on the road, the team ended the season on a positive note with a two-game winning streak. In 2023 FAMU won the HBCU National Championship under the final season of Willie Simmons as head coach. The post HBCU head coach doubles as umpire appeared first on HBCU Gameday. ‘Our time': Boardman boys ready to contend at State

BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – The Boardman boys bowling is making the trip up to the OHSAA State Bowling Tournament for a third consecutive year as a team. 'This is a great group led by three really strong seniors and we've thrown it great all year,' head coach John Lucansky said. 'I just hope we can continue that one more weekend, one more day and bring home a state title.' After claiming the All-Conference Conference title, the Spartans went on to also win the Sectional and District Championships on the way to a state berth with high hopes. 'We just really want to win this. The girls set a high standard last year. We just want to hold that up,' senior Caden Wilcox said. 'It's our last time to do this. We just want to win it out and get off on a good note.' They have three experienced seniors to lean on with Austin Rule and Don Bagdassarian paired with Wilcox. But they are solid throughout, with juniors Jessy McCutcheon and Chase Realty, along with sophomore Ben Hildebrand, completing the rotation. 'A lot of teams that went to districts and state, they only had like a solid three or four, which is still good, but we have a strong five,' Bagdassarian said. 'So the fact that we know that we don't have to necessarily strike every time because we have teammates that will strike, it's a lot less nerve-racking while you're out there.' The Spartans also take one of the highest scores from all the district champions into the weekend in Columbus with a team total of 4,580. 'These guys have been through a lot past four years. We've qualified three times. I think it's our time; I hope so anyway,' Lucansky said. The Division I Bowling State Championships begin on March 7 at H.P. Lanes. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
