S. Syamsundar, Inspector General of Police, South Zone, on Thursday issued orders entrusting K.A. Vidyadharan, Deputy Superintendent of Police ( District Crime Branch, Pathanamthitta, with the investigation into the case involving the illegal detention of a Dalit woman by the Peroorkada police following a false charge of stealing a gold necklace. The order follows a report submitted by the District Police Chief (Thiruvananthapuram City) Thomson Jose. Notably, the State Human Rights Commission had also ordered that the case be probed by a police officer not below the rank of from outside Thiruvananthapuram district. Mr. Vidyadharan has been instructed to probe various angles of the case including the alleged abuse faced by the complainant and the discovery of the necklace from the complainant's employer's house. He has been ordered to submit his investigation report by June 25.

Convict lodged in Tiruchi Central Prison dies

A convict lodged in Central Prison, Tiruchi, fainted and died on Monday. Mariya Soosai, 71, of Inam Mathur in Ariyalur district was lodged in the prison in April 2024 after being convicted in a cheating and forgery case probed by the District Crime Branch in Ariyalur. Police sources said Mariya Soosai fainted in the early hours of Monday and was immediately taken to Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital here. The duty doctor examined Mariya Soosai and and declared him dead. K.K. Nagar police have registered a case under Section 196 of the BNSS.

The District Crime Branch police are investigating a complaint alleging misappropriation of ₹18.30 lakh using the automated teller machine (ATM) card of a retired government employee who died in 2021. According to sources, the DCB police received a complaint from the District Treasury stating that the son of a deceased retired government employee, Jayaseeli Kamala Bai of Saint Antony Street, Maharnombuchavadi, Thanjavur, did not inform the Treasury that his mother passed away on October 18, 2021. He used the ATM card of his deceased mother to draw the pension credited in her bank account for the last four years. The DCB registered a case against Prince Jason, son of the deceased pensioner, the sources added. Meanwhile, Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Wing personnel conducted a search at the house of the Village Administrative Officer, Mullikur in The Nilgiris district, Rasiya Begam, reportedly constructed by her at Ammapettai, Thanjavur district. According to sources, the accused had revealed to the DVAC personnel that she had built a house at Thuneri in The Nilgiris district while serving as a VAO there and at Ammapettai in Thanjavur district. Hence, the DVAC personnel conducted a search at the house owned by her at Ammapettai, sources said.
