Chance meeting leads to successful charity concert
Celtic choral connections between three choirs, born from a meeting at a bowls competition in Westport, Ireland, culminated in a memorable charity concert at St Mary's Church, Tenby. Pembroke Farmers' Club member Ed Morris, a baritone with Pembroke and District Male Voice, initiated this connection. He met a member of Tredagh Singers from Drogheda, a sister of Ed's neighbour, at the competition. 18 months later, the Tredagh Singers joined with the Narberth-based Serendipity Choir and Pembroke choristers at Tenby. The well-supported concert raised more than £3,000 for Prostate Cymru and Pancreatic Cancer UK charities. Each choir was applauded for their individual performances before joining for a finale of 'Calon Lan' and 'You'll Never Walk Alone'. The MC was Brian Harries, chairman of the Pembrokeshire Friends of Prostate Cymru. Juliet Rossiter, the musical director of both Pembrokeshire choirs, conducted 14 individual pieces. The accompanists were Heather Williams (Serendipity) and William Lambert (Pembroke). Gifts were exchanged, with Tredagh chairman Vincent Moore presenting a framed score of 'Calon Lan' and a bottle of local whiskey. In return, Pembroke chairman Huw Morgan gave a print of Barafundle, one of the county's well-known beaches. Both local choirs hope to continue their connection with the Tredagh Singers in the future, both in Wales and Ireland.

Mansfield Male Voice Choir perform with Pembroke group
The performance saw the Mansfield Male Voice Choir hosted by the Pembroke and District Male Voice, celebrating a long-standing camaraderie. The event welcomed the newly elected mayor of Pembroke, Cllr Gareth Jones, with the vicar, Rev Heidi de Gruchy, addressing the audience. Both choirs presented individual pieces before joining together for the finale, performing 'My Lord What a Morning' and 'You'll Never Walk Alone'. Mansfield's set included 'The Gentlemen', an octet group known for close harmony, performing 'Calendar Girls' and the Righteous Brothers' 'You've Lost That Loving Feeling'. The choir also showcased their Welsh language skills with 'Ar Hyd Ar Nos' and 'O Gymru'. In honour of the VE-Day 80th anniversary, the Pembroke choir included 'Let A New Day Dawn' and 'Tell My Father' in their programme. The evening was memorable for John Griffiths, a new bass section member, as he performed in his first concert. The conductors for the evening were Ian Grice of Mansfield and Juliet Rossiter of Pembroke. The choirs later gathered for a luncheon at the Town Hall and a post-concert reception at the Power Station Club.

Pembroke Male Choir sing to help Pembroke church bells fund
The concert was a successful fundraiser to restore working bells to the church tower, and details of the project were given by the St Mary's Bell Conductor, Ann Bunker. Choir and audience were welcomed by the Vicar, the Rev Heidi de Gruchy, and the concert was very much a family affair as her husband, the Rev William Lambert, is the choir's accompanist. Family teamwork was quickly in action as Rev Heidi came to the rescue when, during the first item, Rachie, the music stand on the keyboard fell off. With Heidi holding up the music, William never missed a note! Equilibrium restored, the choir continued in fine voice, backed up by MC Matthew John's humour and stories. Choir items included one of several new pieces learned in recent months, Anthem from the musical Chess,, songs from Les Miserables' and My Lord What A Morning. For the encore, American Trilogy, Matthew's appeal for reinforcements from the audience brought three men to join in, one a visitor from the Wirral. Two solo items demonstrated the splendid keyboard skills of Rev William who played a Chopin Polonaise and Clair de Lune by Debussy. The latest new chorister to stage was baritone Jonathan Price, soon to be joined by other recent additions to the baritone and bass sections. The first tenor section continues to hope that local men who can hit the higher notes will also be attracted to join this very friendly choir. The next concert is a special one, on Sunday May 4 at Monkton Priory Church, Pembroke, alongside old friends from Mansfield Male Voice, with some 60 choristers enjoying the superb acoustics of this magnificent church. The concert begins at 3.30 pm. Further details can be found on the choir's Facebook pages.
