Beloved Mbombela armed reaction officer dies a hero
The tragic killing of Bongani Matenjwa, a Divergent Ops armed reaction officer, sent shockwaves through the Mbombela community in Mpumalanga.
Lowvelder reports that Matenjwa (32), who joined the security company just two months ago, was fatally shot at Riverside Mall while pursuing a suspect on Friday night, April 18.
'Bongani, Friday night was your last call. You passed doing what you loved most – protecting others and fighting for a safer world. Your shift has ended, but you will always remain in our hearts. You were a brother, friend, colleague and role model. Though we wish we could bring you back, we must accept that God has chosen you for a greater purpose. Please watch over us,' his colleague said, speaking highly of his dedication and impact on the team despite his short tenure.
Matenjwa was tracking a suspect on the R40 with a suspicious bag on his shoulders when he breached a palisade at the mall. Exiting his vehicle to give chase, Matenjwa was tragically shot with a rifle by the fleeing suspect.
The suspect subsequently engaged law enforcement officers in a shoot-out, wielding an AK-47 believed to be the weapon used in Matenjwa's killing. After a tip-off, SAPS officers apprehended the suspect early on Saturday morning on the roof, where he was found wounded and still in possession of the firearm.
The suspect, a Mozambican national, remains hospitalised while facing charges of murder, attempted murder, and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, according to provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Donald Mdhluli. Additional charges may be added as the investigation progresses.
His name cannot be made public as he is yet to appear in court. He is currently in Rob Ferreira Hospital under police guard.
The loss of Matenjwa has left his family devastated, compounded by financial struggles to transport his body to eSwatini for burial. His sister, Sphiwe Matenjwa, said: 'Bongani was the problem solver of our family, always ready to help. He loved his three little girls wholeheartedly and was deeply devoted to them. He was doing what he loved most – protecting others – when his life was cut short. Though we are still in disbelief, we take comfort knowing he died doing what he was passionate about.'
An emotional memorial service drive in remembrance of Bongani Matenjwa was held in Mbombela yesterday.
He leaves behind three little girls and his father.
