Ed Sheeran suffers fall live on stage before making tour admission

Ed Sheeran was left red-faced after falling over on stage during the opening night of his Mathematics Tour in Madrid, having wowed fans at BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend Ed Sheeran's European tour kicked off on a rather flat note... and that is not referring to his vocals. The Grammy-winning star took a spectacular tumble on stage in front of thousands of fans during his performance in Madrid on Friday night. At 34, Ed has managed to sell out two concerts at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, which can accommodate over 70,000 fans when filled to capacity. Luckily for Ed's international fans, they can still join in the fun each night thanks to the internet, but unfortunately for the star, this also means his embarrassing moments are immortalised. ‌ Videos taken by those present at the concert show Ed energetically sprinting onto the stage and doing a lap, urging fans to clap before his next song. However, his enthusiasm seemed to get the better of him, resulting in Ed ending up face down on the floor. ‌ Being the professional he is, he quickly got up and started strumming his guitar as if nothing had happened, laughing off the mishap. As fans behind their cameras also giggled, Ed shook his head, launching into his 2017 Divide album hit Castle on the Hill. Responding to clips of the incident, one fan joked on X about the gig: 'He had to be iconic from the start.' Another said: 'He's so cute, hope he's ok.' A third tweeted: 'LOL it's starting well', as a fourth wrote: 'LOL Poor thing, he's excited, leave him alone!' ‌ After his record-breaking gig, Ed shared a video on Instagram where he basked in the applause from the packed stadium, visibly overwhelmed and emotional. His heartfelt caption read: 'First show back for Mathematics in a long time. Honestly I get so low confidence sometimes in the music I put out still, I dunno how to explain it but I feel moments like this remind me how much I love what I do, and how much these songs connect, and how much I appreciate you guys for making me feel this feeling I've felt on stage since I was 11.' 'I love being on the road and sharing these moments with you,' he added. 'Such an incredible night and an incredible feeling, thank you for making me feel so loved Madrid. See you tomorrow x'. ‌ Ed's 2025 Mathematics Tour will see him play in 13 European countries this summer, with the set including his biggest tunes as well as tracks from his upcoming album Play, which lands in September. The hitmaker's popularity is clearly showing no signs of dipping, as he also sent fans wild with a surprise show last weekend. Following rumours of a 'big name' taking to the stage at BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend in Liverpool, Ed showed up on the New Music Stage on Saturday afternoon, saying he chose the stage because he'd 'never played it before' and the tent had 'the best energy'. ‌ Ed's set was so popular that access to the tent had to be temporarily restricted as it reached maximum capacity. Also performing at Big Weekend was Stargazing singer Myles Smith, who is supporting Ed on his tour. Ed first burst onto the music scene in 2011 and has gone on to sell over 200million records worldwide. ‌ Speaking recently about his future, he revealed his plans to call it a day after releasing 10 unique studio albums, drawing inspiration from filmmaker Quentin Tarantino. "I wanted to do 10," Ed shared on Jimmy Fallon's talk show, expressing his fascination with Tarantino, who he heard was making 10 films alongside side projects like Grindhouse. Ed's initial series of albums followed a mathematical theme, with titles such as Plus, Multiply, Divide, Subtract, and Equals. Deviating from this pattern, he now plans to include Pause, Fast Forward, Rewind, and Stop - an idea he's harboured since he was 18. In addition to this, the father-of-two, who tied the knot with childhood love Cherry Seaborn in 2019, is also continuously working on a life-spanning album, set to be released posthumously.

Ed Sheeran accidentally reveals major detail about Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco's upcoming wedding

Ed Sheeran accidentally revealed a detail about Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco 's upcoming wedding, which they have managed to keep entirely under wraps. Although the happy couple have refrained from sharing any plans about their nuptials, the Perfect hitmaker, 34, spilled that the lovebirds have already sent out 'save the dates' to guests. When asked if he had already been invited to the pair's big day, the Grammy winner confirmed that he had already RSVPed to the the occasion. The father-of-two also shared that Blanco was in attendance when he and his wife, Cherry Seaborn, wed during an intimate ceremony with only 40 guests back in January 2018. Despite their close friendship, Sheeran admitted that he didn't have a 'favorite' song just yet from Gomez and Blanco's new album, I Said I Love You First, which was released in March. 'Not yet, no,' he confessed while hooked up to a polygraph machine for Vanity Fair's 'Lie Detector' series. 'I gotta be honest, I bought it on vinyl, and I wanna listen to it on vinyl. I haven't listened to it the whole way through.' Blanco worked on Sheeran's Divide album, which sold over 40 million copies, and, together, the duo created 'five number ones that were spawned for other artists,' including Justin Bieber's Love Yourself, Anne-Marie's 2002, and Halsey's Eastside. While appearing on Daniel Wall's Behind The Wall podcast in March, Blanco said he originally planned to join Sheeran on tour for a week but ended up staying for two years. 'It was Ed's biggest album. It sold about 40 million copies. It was one of the biggest albums ever. And we just made it on a tour bus, in the back of studios, in his house… We never worked in a real studio,' he said. Many of their hits emerged unexpectedly, including Love Yourself, which was written in the middle of the night after a party. 'We were wasted, eating pizza, got back on the bus and decided to make a song just to stay up because we were going to be woken up at border patrol in two hours. And then it becomes a big song,' Blanco recalled. Blanco also praised Sheeran's relentless work ethic. 'We'd be backstage working on a song. They'd say, 'Ed, 10 minutes.' And he's like, 'Okay,' still working. 'Three minutes.' He keeps going. 'Two minutes,' they put the mic on his head. 'One minute,' and he's like, 'Keep working on the song, I'll be right back.' 'Then he goes, performs for two hours, comes back, and says, 'Okay, I was thinking about the pre-chorus while I was on stage.' I was like, 'How can you think about the pre-chorus while singing to 80,000 people?' I can't even remember what I had for breakfast. And somehow, he does it.' When asked if he had already been invited to the pair's big day, the Grammy winner confirmed that he had already RSVPed 'yes' to the the occasion (seen in 2017 with Blanco) Gomez and Blanco confirmed their relationship in December 2023, and announced their engagement a year later. Selena and Benny have known each other for over a decade — since 2013, when he first met her mom, Mandy Teefey. He later co-produced two of her hits Kill Em With Kindness and Same Old Love, from her 2015 album Revival. In March 2025, Gomez teased they were in no rush to tie the knot. When asked about their wedding plans, the pair revealed to Rolling Stone that they aren't planning on walking down the aisle just yet. 'I think every day she's planned a new wedding in her head,' Blanco mused. 'We're very much "take it one day at a time"-type of people. We're still not over this moment.' He, then, added: 'Literally, while you were talking, she was sitting there staring at her ring.' Gomez noted that she 'genuinely' feels 'like this is such a special time' and raved about their upcoming album, I Said I Love You First, which she explained is her 'main focus right now.'

Watch Ed Sheeran surprise commuters with impromptu set at King's Cross station

Ed Sheeran surprised commuters and fans with an impromptu performance outside London's King's Cross station. Dressed in a vibrant pink T-shirt, the 34-year-old singer-songwriter played his acoustic guitar against a backdrop of a large pink heart emblazoned with the word "Azizam" in white. His new single is called "Azizam." Sheeran treated the gathering crowd to a selection of his popular hits, including "Perfect," "Bad Habits," and "Shivers." Fans described the unexpected concert as "incredible" and "super fun." One commuter, pausing between train connections, expressed her delight, saying she "struck gold" by witnessing the performance. Olivia Heathcote, 22, from Teesside, said she felt 'lucky' to watch him play some of his most popular songs. 'I didn't know he was going to be performing so I felt like I struck gold when I left King's Cross station,' the legal secretary told the PA news agency. 'The atmosphere was amazing, everyone was singing along and it was a super fun experience. He played all of his most famous songs and I felt really lucky to be able to see it live.' Some fans who follow Sheeran on social media were aware of his plans to perform at King's Cross, including Ronnie Swan, 26, who 'rushed over' at the chance of seeing the singer perform in an intimate setting. Mr Swan, who is originally from Brisbane in Australia but now lives in Twickenham, was at King's Cross at around 1pm on Friday and said it was his third time seeing the singer perform live. 'It was a dream come true to see Ed perform in that setting. I've seen him a couple times play a stadium, but to watch him just play in the street in broad daylight was incredible,' Mr Swan, who works in sales, told PA. He said he has been a fan of Sheeran since he released his Divide album in 2017 and described the singer as a 'wholesome' person. 'I love that him and his music are so down to earth and pure. He's just a normal wholesome guy who put in the hard work to become successful at doing what he loves,' he said. 'The new song is great. High energy, high octane. Summer vibes. Makes me very excited for the new album.' Meanwhile, some dedicated fans travelled from afar to watch Sheeran perform his new song including Felix Stender who travelled from his home town of Kiel, near Hamburg, in Germany. 'I just travelled from Germany for the small gig at King's Cross as I knew today was the release day from the song Azizam,' Mr Stender, 29, told PA. 'I'm a big fan of Ed and in general I'm travelling around the world to see Ed. 'I think Ed is one the best live artists of the world and every gig is more than worthy.' Sheeran appeared as a guest on Scott Mills' BBC Radio 2 breakfast show to unveil Azizam. 'It means 'my love' or 'my dear' in Farsi and the producer I made it with is Persian. It was something I've just never done before and it was exciting and new,' he said. The Thinking Out Loud singer shared an Instagram post after his performance and described the atmosphere as 'awesome'. He wrote: 'Painted a red London bus Pink and did a gig around the city today. I loved seeing all the reactions of people on the street bopping to Azizam. 'Play is playful and fun, and today was awesome. Thanks for all the love.'

Ed Sheeran writes urgent open letter to Keir Starmer for music education funding: ‘The time to act is now'

Ed Sheeran has written an open letter to prime minister Keir Starmer and the government calling for immediate, long-term funding of music education in the UK. He and more than 600 other artists and industry leaders, including Harry Styles, Elton John, Stormzy, Robert Plant and Eric Clapton, are appealing for a £250m UK music education package this spring to repair 'decades of dismantling music'. 'As an industry, we bring in £7.6bn into the UK economy, yet the next generation is not there to take the reins,' Sheeran said. The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter, 34, is one of Britain's most successful music exports. In 2017, his album Divide became the biggest-selling of the year worldwide, and was credited with helping to propel a record seven per cent growth in export revenues of British music. That same year, Sheeran appeared alongside fellow artists such as Styles and Sam Smith in the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry's (IFPI) global top 10, while Dua Lipa beat titans including Beyonce and Taylor Swift to become Spotify's most-streamed female artist. Seven years later, the landscape has changed drastically; last year was the first in over 20 years without a UK global top 10 single or album in the charts. 'We are writing collectively as artists, civil society and industry, appealing to your personal belief in music and the promise of opportunity for all under Labour,' Sheeran, citing the recent report, told Starmer in his letter. 'Learning an instrument and getting up on stage – whether in school or a community club – is now a luxury not every child can afford.' He added: 'The time to act is now. State schools – which educate 93 per cent of the country's children – have seen a 21 per cent decrease in music provision.' Enjoy unlimited access to 100 million ad-free songs and podcasts with Amazon Music Sign up now for a 30-day free trial Sign up He cited recent speeches from Brit Award-winning artists Ezra Collective and Myles Smith, who both called for better music funding at the 2025 ceremony this month. 'How many more venues need to close, how many music programs need to be cut before we realise that we can't just celebrate success, we have to protect the foundations that make it?' Smith, who received the Rising Star award, said in his address at London's O2 Arena. Ezra Collective, who in 2023 became the first jazz act to win the Mercury Prize, said: 'This moment right here is because of the great youth clubs, and the great teachers and the great schools that support young people playing music.' Sheeran also referenced culture secretary Lisa Nandy 's 10-point plan for the music industry, which she announced in January while hailing his hometown of Ipswich. She visited the area in Suffolk last year with Sheeran, later describing 'an entire ecosystem through from equipping young people with those skills and that love of music at school, all the way through to being able to perform at smaller live music venues, larger live music venues and get the skills that they need to work in the music industry'. 'That is a model that we would like to replicate around the country,' she said. Sheeran has also called on education secretary Bridget Phillipson, foreign secretary David Lammy, business secretary Jonathan Reynolds and health secretary Wes Streeting to 'stand up for music education'. 'Artists and industry can't deliver on the world stage for the UK without schools, youth clubs and stages at home,' he said. 'Music in and out of school should be for all, not a few.' The letter lays out five key areas for improvement for music in the UK: music funding in schools, training for music teachers, funding for grassroots venues/spaces, music apprenticeships, and a diverse music curriculum. Sheeran is backed by fellow stars including Harry Styles, Elton John, rappers Stormzy, Dave and Central Cee, pop band Coldplay and Annie Lennox. Other co-signers include director Richard Curtis, Sony Music UK chairman and CEO Jason Iley, presenter Dermot O'Leary, and producer Fred Again. The letter comes after the musician launched the Ed Sheeran Foundation in January, a nationwide initiative aimed at providing inclusive, high-quality music education. The musician, who has 14 UK No 1 singles to his name and eight UK No 1 albums, has become known for his charity efforts in recent years, setting up the Ed Sheeran Suffolk Music Foundation (ESSMF) and donating to his former school, Thomas Mills High School and Sixth Form, in Framlingham.
