‘Our time': Boardman boys ready to contend at State
BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – The Boardman boys bowling is making the trip up to the OHSAA State Bowling Tournament for a third consecutive year as a team.
'This is a great group led by three really strong seniors and we've thrown it great all year,' head coach John Lucansky said. 'I just hope we can continue that one more weekend, one more day and bring home a state title.'
After claiming the All-Conference Conference title, the Spartans went on to also win the Sectional and District Championships on the way to a state berth with high hopes.
'We just really want to win this. The girls set a high standard last year. We just want to hold that up,' senior Caden Wilcox said. 'It's our last time to do this. We just want to win it out and get off on a good note.'
They have three experienced seniors to lean on with Austin Rule and Don Bagdassarian paired with Wilcox. But they are solid throughout, with juniors Jessy McCutcheon and Chase Realty, along with sophomore Ben Hildebrand, completing the rotation.
'A lot of teams that went to districts and state, they only had like a solid three or four, which is still good, but we have a strong five,' Bagdassarian said. 'So the fact that we know that we don't have to necessarily strike every time because we have teammates that will strike, it's a lot less nerve-racking while you're out there.'
The Spartans also take one of the highest scores from all the district champions into the weekend in Columbus with a team total of 4,580.
'These guys have been through a lot past four years. We've qualified three times. I think it's our time; I hope so anyway,' Lucansky said.
The Division I Bowling State Championships begin on March 7 at H.P. Lanes.
