Coahoma softball downs Lexington for third consecutive state championship

AUSTIN — Once again, Coahoma is on top of the Texas softball world. The Bulldogettes won their third consecutive state championship with a 6-1 victory over Lexington in the Class 3A Division II title game Thursday at McCombs Field. Texas signee Hannah Wells was voted MVP after a 2-for-3 outing with a double and a home run. She also earned the win with eight strikeouts in a complete game. Advertisement Wells crushed the game's first pitch for a double, and two batters later Mia Clemmer opened the scoring with her own double. Lexington answered with a run on three hits in the home half of the first, but Coahoma scored the contest's final five runs. Wells allowed three hits the rest of the way and totaled two walks. Her towering shot in the third gave the Bulldogettes the lead for good. The future Longhorn became emotional seconds after the final out. "It's sad. I know that's terrible to say, but I am actually really sad," Wells said. "It's the best group of seniors in the game of softball, I think, for high school. And that shows with three state championships back to back. It's so surreal." Advertisement Wells played seven games at McCombs Field throughout her career, and that number will soon skyrocket. "I've played a lot of games here. It's my favorite place to be," Wells said. "I love the atmosphere. I just love Texas softball as a whole, so getting to come here is just a once in a lifetime opportunity. I'm so glad I get to do it." Clemmer, a Texas commit, capped the scoring with a solo homer in the sixth. She went 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Nevaeh Kerby, one of six seniors, tied Clemmer with a team-high two RBIs. Coahoma became the first softball team in UIL history to win three state championships in a row. Corpus Christi Calallen will look to match the feat Friday. Advertisement "It's a fitting end for these senior kids," Bulldogettes coach Alexander Orosco said, "that just bust their tails and do things the right way. It was fitting for them to get here and do it one more time." The Coahoma softball team celebrates after a win over Lexington in the Class 3A Division II state championship Thursday, May 29, 2025, at McCombs Field in Austin. Adelphi gets big break to repeat as Division II men's lacrosse champs

It was the timeout that made time stand still. Adelphi men's lacrosse captured its second straight D2 national championship in a 9-8 overtime thriller that only happened after the University of Tampa called a timeout with 12 seconds left — nullifying what would have been the Florida team's game-winner. 'Everyone's hearts just dropped,' junior midfielder Kyle Lewis, who scored the golden goal — his first in OT — told The Post. 'Right after the timeout, we got our emotions back and knew we had a game to play.' Getty Images Head coach Gordon Purdie drew up a special play to get Lewis the ball with 2:41 left in OT because he is 'maybe the hardest working player on my team,' who earned the immaculate opportunity. 'If you look back at the video, I had to see if everything that was going on was real. It felt like just a dream,' Lewis, of Franklin Square, said also praising the four-goal performance by fellow junior middie Vincent McDermott. 'It's been 20 years since the last title for baseball,' senior shortstop Patrick McCarthy, who will play at Manhattanville next year, told The Post. 'It's going to continue this way. We have a lot of young guys that are brought into the program.' Senior softball pitcher Marissa Nosovitch, who will throw for Kutztown University, said that winning counties brought her already close squad closer than ever before. Top-seeded Wantagh takes on No. 3 Seaford on Friday at Farmingdale State at 1 p.m. for Game 2 of the Class A baseball title series. In softball, No. 1 MacArthur faces No. 2 Glen Cove at 1:30 p.m. Friday in Game 2 of the AA Class final at FSU.
