MACC focuses on financial intelligence systems, AI to combat corruption

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will focus on financial intelligence systems and AI-based detection technologies to combat increasingly complex financial crimes. The agency will also implement stricter compliance audits in collaboration with financial institutions to strengthen oversight and enforcement. MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said technological advancements have led to an evolving landscape of corruption and financial crimes involving digital assets, fraudulent investments, cross-border transactions, and complex corporate structures. He added MACC will continue collaborating with financial institutions, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) and enforcement agencies to establish a strong and comprehensive corruption and money laundering prevention ecosystem. He made the remarks at the Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Division Shooting Programme with the Compliance Officers Networking Group (CONG) 2025 at the Shahpadu Target Shooting Club range. "Cunning financial criminals exploit weaknesses in enforcement systems and legislation gaps to create organised criminal networks, threatening national stability," he said. Also present were MACC deputy chief commissioner (operations) Datuk Seri Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya, MACC senior director of investigation Datuk Zainul Darus, National Governance Planning senior director Datuk Saiful Ezral Arifin, MACC AML Division director Norhaizam Muhammad, MACC Security Division director Zuhairie Abu Bakar, CONG chairman Faradina Mohammad Ghouse, and BNM Financial Intelligence and Enforcement Department director Mohd Fuad Arshad.
