Monaghan: Driver jailed for seven years for causing death of teenagers

A man who caused the deaths of two teenage girls whilst driving at nearly twice the speed limit has been sentenced to seven years in McCann, 17, and her best friend, 16-year-old Dlava Mohammed, died when the car they were travelling in struck a tree at Legnakelly, near Clones, on 31 July McGinn, 61, with an address at Drumloo, Newbliss, County Monaghan, previously admitted dangerous driving causing the deaths of the girls were on their way to a school ball at the Westenra Arms Hotel in Monaghan town. McGinn was a friend of Kiea McCann's family and had offered to drive the girls to the event. At an early court hearing he also admitted dangerous driving causing serious bodily harm to Dlava's sister, Avin Mohammed, on the same date.

Man to be sentenced over fatal Monaghan road crash

A 61-year-old man who admitted to dangerous driving causing the deaths of two teenagers in Co Monaghan almost two years ago is due to be sentenced next week. Kiea McCann, 17, and her best friend, 16-year-old Dlava Mohammed, died when the car they were travelling in struck a tree at Legnakelly on 31 July 2023. The girls were on their way to a Debs ball at the Westenra Arms Hotel in Monaghan Town. Anthony McGinn, with an address at Drumloo, Newbliss, Co Monaghan, previously pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing the deaths of the two teenagers. The case was listed for sentencing before Judge John Aylmer at Monaghan Circuit Criminal Court this morning. However, following agreement from McGinn's solicitor and the Director of Public Prosecutions, the case was put back for sentencing to next Wednesday, 7 May. Members of Kiea McCann's family were in court for this morning's brief hearing. Dangerous driving causing death has a maximum sentence of ten years in prison or a fine up to €20,000, or both.
