KINGSPORT, Tenn. (WJHL) — Dobyns-Bennett High School hosted an African American History Seminar on Thursday.

'Kingsport has a rich history in the African-American community and the contributions that have shaped our city and have shaped just our state and our nation,' Social Studies Teacher James Scales said. 'We have much history here that is to be celebrated. Today we seek to pay homage to that and allow our students at the same time to learn of that history.'
A student-led discussion with former Douglass High School alumni, a historical presentation by Calvin Sneed and more were part of the event.
'That's what makes it so special,' Scales said. 'The ones that are that are here today, they lived it. They gave us firsthand accounts of what it was like.'
