Marshall Football Preview 2025: How Fast Can the Thundering Herd Rebuild?
How do you go from what Marshall pulled off in 2024 to a complete and total rebuild that fast? The Herd got red hot, ripped through a relatively weak conference slate, won the game it had to pull off at James Madison, and shut down Louisiana cold for a 31-3 victory for the Sun Belt ten-win season was the first since the Doc Holliday days of 2015, and then head coach Charles Huff took the Southern Miss job. Almost everyone jumped into the portal, there weren't enough guys around to play the bowl game, and now Marshall is starting from scratch. 52-year-old Tony Gibson has never been a head coach. He comes in after spending the last six seasons as NC State's defensive coordinator, and yeah, he might have to work his way into the not his fault. At last count, over 25 players had left through the portal. It could come together fast. If the running game finds a groove right away, the schedule is manageable enough to come up with a shocker of a strong first campaign under 0-12 wouldn't be a total stunner, either, considering it's not just about the new faces, there's woefully little overall time logged in at the FBS level among the protected starters. Marshall Thundering Herd Preview 2025: Offense X CFN, Fiu | CFN Facebook | Bluesky Fiu, CFN- Welcome to the Jacksonville State Thundering Herd. Former Gamecock offensive coordinator Rod Smith made the move over to Marshall after helping to lead one of the nation's most interesting and dangerous attacks. This is all starting from scratch, but … - They have a few nice quarterbacks. Zion Turner was in the Jax State system last year, but didn't play much. Carlos Del Rio-Wilson (Syracuse) is a dangerous option who'll get every shot at the job with the all-around skills to step in right away. For comparison, last year's Gamecock quarterback Tyler Huff ran for 1,344 yards and 15 scores, and … - This system will hammer the hot running back. Tre Stewart led Jacksonville State with 1,638 yards and 25 touchdowns, and now it's up to Michael Allen (UNLV) and Jo'Shon Barbie (McNeese State) to combine forces. Both averaged over five yards per carry last season for their respective schools. - There's more continuity on the offensive line than anywhere else on the team, at least in the interior with Logan Osburn back at center and Jalen Slappy a veteran guard to work around. 348-pound Shunmarkus Adams should be set at the other guard spot. The tackles are coming from the portal - 6-9, 356-pound Tyler McDuffie (Hampton) should be the best of the lot.- The Herd have a star in tight end Toby Payne - he needs the ball more. He tied for the team lead with six touchdown catches, but all of the other receivers of note are gone. Demarcus Lacey (Jacksonville State) has speed on the outside. 6-3, 200-pound Antonio Harmon got in a little work at Mississippi State, and Ben Turner (West Liberty) is a quick inside target. Marshall Thundering Herd Preview 2025: Defense - There's no replacing the pass rush that was so good last year. 17-sack Mike Green is a Baltimore Raven, and just about everyone else who came up with a sack is gone. Paul Hutson (Campbell) is a big end coming in, but it's the inside that has to shine right away.335-pound KaTron Evans (Charlotte), 330-pound Tyas Martin (Jackson State), Jamaal Whice (South Carolina) and Jalil Rivera-Harvey (Arizona State) bring the bulk.- There isn't much experience among the new linebackers, but Javae Gilmore (Mississippi State) is a big body for the interior, and quick Jibreel Al-Amin (Jacksonville State) made 23 tackles in a rotation. - The secondary caught a bit of a break when Jadarius Green-McKnight chose to come back. The safety made 38 tackles with a pick-six, corner Daytione Smith got in a little time, and everyone else is from the portal. Most of the new parts are nice prospects without a ton of proven production, but safety Boogie Trotter (Tennessee State) should be a statistical star coming off a 62-tackle season. Corner Marvae Myers-Glover (Middle Tennessee) started his college career in 2019, and made 41 stops and broke up four passes last season. Marshall Thundering Herd Key to the Season Get the running game working right offense won't be smooth, but as long as the experienced interior and huge tackles can blast away, the quick backfield should control games a bit on the ground. Time of possession won't be on the Herd's side, so … Marshall Thundering Herd Key Player Katron Evans, DT goes for all the giant new defensive tackles. This gets ugly fast if the Herd can't hold up against the run, and that's where the 335-pound Charlotte transfer comes in. He needs to be an anchor. Marshall Thundering Herd Top Transfer, Biggest Transfer Loss Top Transfer In: Michael Allen, RB throw in Jo'Shon Barbie from McNeese State. Give Allen and Barbie a little bit of room, and these two should be able to rip off yards in chunks. They're both quick backs - Allen looked good when he had his chances at UNLV - and should take over a game or Transfer Out: Christian Fitzpatrick, WR your pick of any one of the bazillion transfers who might be the most important. Fitzpatrick has the 6-4 size, the deep speed, and the production with a 34-catch, six-touchdown grab season for the Herd, averaging 17 yards per play. Now he's at Oklahoma State. Marshall Thundering Herd Key Game at Middle Tennessee, Sept. 20How far do the Herd have to go to be decent? The hope is to get past Missouri State and Eastern Kentucky to get to 2-1, and if there's a win over Middle Tennessee on the road in the Sun Belt opener, this could be a surprise team.- 2025 Marshall Schedule Breakdown Marshall Thundering Herd Top 10 Players 1. Toby Payne, TE Jr.2. Ladarius Green-McKnight, S Sr.3. Michael Allen, RB Jr.4. Zion Turner, QB Jr.5. Eric Meeks, C Jr.6. Jo'Shon Barbie, RB Jr.7. Carlos Del Rio-Wilson, QB Sr. 8. Boogie Trotter, S Sr. 9. Javae Gilmore, LB Jr.10. Marvae Myers-Glover, CB Sr. Marshall Thundering Herd 2024 Fun Stats - Sacks: Marshall 36 for 230 yards, Opponents 17 for 120 yards- Second Quarter Scoring: Marshall 138, Opponents 68- Interceptions Thrown: Opponents 13, Marshall 4 Marshall Thundering Herd 2025 Season Prediction, Win Total, What Will Happen Out of all 136 college football teams coming into the season, Marshall is the biggest guess when it comes to figuring out what's about to very, very sheepish call is that the offense works just enough at times to push past a few weak defenses, but there won't be a lick of consistency anywhere across the let's go with this. There will be a win over Eastern Kentucky early on, maybe there's some success against Missouri State, and things will start to get better as the season moves on. It's hard to see the Herd as a major favorite over anyone in Sun Belt play, but there's a chance this changes big one way or another in a real The Marshall Thundering Herd Win Total At … 3.5Likely Wins: Eastern Kentucky50/50 Games: at App State, at Coastal Carolina, at Georgia Southern, Georgia State, at Middle Tennessee, Missouri State, Old Dominion, Texas StateLikely Losses: at Georgia, James Madison, at Louisiana © 2025 The Arena Group Holdings, Inc. Tanks and soldiers are coming to D.C. for the parade. So is this dog.
While watching the dozens of tanks and thousands of soldiers scheduled to parade through the nation's capital later this month, keep an eye out for a pair of pricked ears and a bushy, white-tipped tail. Man's best friend is participating in the sweeping June 14 celebration honoring the Army's 250th birthday and falling on President Donald Trump's 79th birthday. He's a 2½-year-old Blue Heeler named Doc Holliday — a nod to the gunslinger depicted in the American western movie 'Tombstone.' Doc, for short.

How Tombstone ended up in a movie and brought its infamous history to a new audience
Just south of Tucson, sits one of the last boomtowns of the American West. Tombstone, nicknamed "the town too tough to die," is chock-full of Wild West lore and historic landmarks. Whether you're wandering Allen Street, taking a ghost tour in the Bird Cage Theater or chatting with people wearing Old West getups, you can't help feeling like you've discovered time travel. Though the town has been infamous for more than a century, a 1993 movie brought its story to a new audience. "Tombstone", featuring the late Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday, was a box-office smash. The film centers around some of the most notorious characters of the West and, of course, their legendary showdown at O.K. Corral. Step back into the past. Here's everything you need to know about Tombstone, Arizona, and why you should visit. The legend of Tombstone began in 1877, when a down-on-his-luck prospector named Ed Schieffelin found himself searching for ore in the hills of the San Pedro Valley. As the story goes, Schieffelin was warned that all he would find would be his tombstone. When Schieffelin claimed mining rights over the rich silver deposits in the area, he named his discovery "Tombstone." Just four years later, the town was booming. Tombstone isn't notorious for it's minerals, though. Everything changed on Oct. 16, 1881, when a long-simmering feud erupted into a shootout near the now legendary O.K. Corral. City Marshal Virgil Earp appointed his brothers, Wyatt and Morgan, and Doc Holliday as deputy city marshals. The group strode through the streets with a concealed, sawed-off shotgun on a mission: disarm a no-good pack of ranchers and rustlers known as "the Cowboys." Firearms were not permitted in town, and tensions had been high between the two factions for months. It was the outlaws — Ike and Billy Clanton, Frank and Tom McLaury and Billy Claiborne — versus the lawmen. The Earps and Holliday faced off against the group in a vacant lot about 100 feet west of the back entrance to the O.K. Corral. It's still debated who fired the first shot that fateful day, but the 30-second gunfight killed the McLaury brothers and Billy Clanton. The Earp brothers and Holliday were wounded. Two months after the shootout, Virgil Earp was ambushed and seriously wounded. Morgan was killed with a shot to the back shortly after. Wyatt Earp would set out on his "bloody Vendetta Ride" after no one was convicted of either crime. He tracked down and killed the men he deemed responsible for the murders of his brothers and promptly left Arizona Territory. More Arizona history: Have you heard of these seven Arizona ghost towns? Though Tombstone was a tourist destination before, a 1993 movie cemented its status as a Wild West town worth visiting. The 1993 "Tombstone" was directed by George P. Cosmatos and starred Kurt Russell, Sam Elliott, Powers Boothe, Bill Paxton and, of course, the late Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday. With Kevin Costner's big-budget "Wyatt Earp" set to hit theaters six months after the release of "Tombstone", Cosmatos' film was supposed to be the lesser of the two. It ended up becoming a favorite among modern Westerns. Val Kilmer's work in "Tombstone" is referenced amongst his greatest successes. USA TODAY reporter Brian Truitt described Kilmer's portrayal of Doc Holliday as "a wry guy who looked like death, drank laudanum like it was going out of style but was still dangerous as a rattlesnake." Kilmer even named his memoir "I'm Your Huckleberry" for his love of Mark Twain and an iconic line in the film. You can stream "Tombstone" on Hulu, AMC+ or Philo. If Wild West history interests you or if you're planning a state-wide road trip, Tombstone is an essential destination. Consider stopping by the O.K. Corral, which was expanded to include the actual site of the famous gunfight. It sits at 326 East Allen Street. Catch one of the shootout reenactment shows at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. daily. Tourists often frequent Boot Hill Graveyard, another Tombstone landmark and Billy Clanton and the McLaury brothers' final resting place. You can also visit the blacksmith shop, the O.K. Corral Stables, C.S. Fly's Photographic Gallery, the Tombstone Courthouse Museum, the Tombstone Epitaph Newspaper (a museum dedicated to Arizona's oldest, still running, newspaper) and the Good Enough Silver Mine. Even without the shows or tours, just spending time in Tombstone is enough to make you feel the rich, and often violent, history rushing through the town's veins. Despite the town's historic designation, the government doesn't provide funding for upkeep. This means the magic of Tombstone is created by the employees and residents who work to preserve the town's 1880s vibe, while also following the strict rules laid out in the historic designation. To get there from central Phoenix, take Interstate 10 east past Tucson to Benson. Go south on State Route 80 (at Exit 303) to Tombstone. Arizona Republic contributor Roger Naylor, Republic reporter Bill Goodykoontz and USA TODAY reporter Bryan Alexander contributed to this article. Val Kilmer, of 'Top Gun' and 'Batman Forever' fame, dies at 65
Val Kilmer, the movie star known for roles in blockbusters like 'Top Gun" and 'Batman Forever,' and as Doc Holliday in a memorable performance in the western 'Tombstone,' died Tuesday night at the age of 65, his daughter told the Associated Press. Kilmer died from pneumonia in Los Angeles, surrounded by family and friends, daughter Mercedes Kilmer said in an email to the news agency. Kilmer has said 'I've lived a magical life' and moviegoers would recognize him from a range of some of the most popular movies of his generation and beyond. He played opposite Tom Cruise as 'Iceman' in 'Top Gun,' released in 1986, which catapulted him to fame. He returned to the role in 'Top Gun: Maverick,' the sequel released in 2022. In recent years, Kilmer battled health issues. In 2017, he revealed he was recovering from throat cancer, and People magazine reported in 2021 that the actor had gone undergone a tracheostomy that permanently damaged his speaking voice. "It isn't easy to talk and be understood," the actor wrote on his website in 2022, discussing the effects of his cancer treatment. "I am improving all the time, but am not able to be out in the world the same way I had become accustomed." Kilmer played Jim Morrison in the 1991 Oliver Stone film 'The Doors,' and in 1993 delivered a memorable performance as the ailing but deadly Doc Holliday in 'Tombstone," in which he uttered the famous line, 'I'm your huckleberry.' Kilmer also starred alongside Robert De Niro and Al Pacino in the heist drama 'Heat,' a 1995 film that also included Jon Voight and Tom Sizemore. In his 2020 memoir, titled 'I'm Your Huckleberry,' Kilmer revealed he did not want the role of Iceman in 'Top Gun.' 'I didn't care about the film. The story didn't interest me,' Kilmer wrote, adding that he was surprised when he got the part. 'I read the lines indifferently and yet, amazingly, I was told I had the part,' he said. 'I felt more deflated than inflated.' One career nadir was playing Batman in Joel Schumacher's goofy, garish 'Batman Forever' with Nicole Kidman and opposite Chris O'Donnell's Robin — before George Clooney took up the mantle for 1997's 'Batman & Robin' and after Michael Keaton played the Dark Knight in 1989's 'Batman' and 1992's 'Batman Returns.' Kilmer's presence on the silver screen diminished in the 2000s. The New York Times Magazine wrote in 2020 that, 'His casting problem was solved for him when no one wanted to work with him anymore. The actor — who took part in the Method branch of Suzuki arts training — threw himself into parts. When he played Doc Holliday in 'Tombstone,' he filled his bed with ice for the final scene to mimic the feeling of dying from tuberculosis. To play Morrison, he wore leather pants all the time, asked castmates and crew to only refer to him as Jim Morrison and blasted The Doors for a year. That intensity also gave Kilmer a reputation that he was difficult to work with, something he grudgingly agreed with later in life. 'I had been deemed difficult and alienated the head of every major studio,' he wrote in his memoir, according to the New York Times Magazine. Kilmer also wrote that while he famously had relationships with supermodel Cindy Crawford and actress Angelina Jolie, he was heartbroken after splitting with Daryl Hannah. 'I know I would love her with my whole heart forever and that love has lost none of its strength. I am still in love with Daryl,' he wrote in the memoir, released 19 years after the pair briefly dated in 2001. Kilmer also dated Cher, who he wrote cared for him after the throat cancer and treatment. 'He was at my house a lot of the time he was sick,' Cher told People in 2021. 'He was brave the whole time. I saw how sick he was." Kilmer married actor Joanne Whalley in 1988. The pair divorced but had two children, son Jack and daughter Mercedes. Kilmer grew up in the Chatsworth neighborhood of Los Angeles and attended Chatsworth High School alongside actors Kevin Spacey and Mare Winningham. An 1981, he was the youngest drama student ever admitted to the prestigious Juilliard School, aged 17. In 2021, 'Val," a documentary about Kilmer's life, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. Kilmer said that throat cancer made it hard to speak and to be understood. 'I have behaved poorly. I have behaved bravely. I have behaved bizarrely to some. I deny none of this and have no regrets because I have lost and found parts of myself that I never knew existed,' he said toward the end of the film. 'And I am blessed.'
