Lorde Gets Candid About Her Body Image Issues While Making 2021's ‘Solar Power'

Lorde opened up in a new interview published Thursday (May 1) about the struggles she experienced with body image while making her 2021 album Solar Power. 'I had made my body very small, because I thought that that was what you did as a woman and a woman on display,' she told filmmaker and close friend Martine Syms in a conversation for Document Journal. 'I thought, 'I'm small. This will communicate to people that I'm taking my position seriously.'' 'It had the effect of making me [feel] totally ungrounded,' she continued. 'I was very weak. I look back now, and I don't have that same feeling of floating away .. .I wasn't very embodied.' Lorde also revealed that gaining a healthier perspective on her body was part of the years-long break between Solar Power and her upcoming fourth album, Virgin, which is set to be released June 25 via Universal Music New Zealand and Republic Records. 'It was like, 'I'm not going to put anything out until I'm in my body the way I know I'm supposed to be, to be able to do my work.' That's all I did the last four years, basically,' she told Syms, adding, 'This album is a byproduct of that process of fully coming into my body and feeling the fullness of my power. It's cool to be back in that place of, like, the portal opening and the weight. I'm myself. All these parts of me are represented in a bunch of different ways. I'm not hiding from myself. I'm not stealing from myself.' Fans got their first glimpse of Virgin on April 24, when Lorde dropped her new single 'What Was That' along with a music video, culminating in Lorde's recent headline-making appearance at New York City's Washington Square Park. Since then, the singer has also unveiled the album's transparent, X-ray-inspired cover art and revamped her online store with merch teasing the project. Lorde Reflects on Body Image Struggles & Eating Improperly ‘For Weeks' Ahead of the 2021 Met Gala

This year's Met Gala was a very different experience for Lorde than the last time she attended the event in 2021. In a vulnerable voice note sent to fans Tuesday night (May 6), the pop star opened up about having overcome her issues with body image in the four years since she last walked the Metropolitan Museum of Art red carpet, revealing that last time she was there, she'd unhealthily restricted her eating for weeks in preparation. 'I didn't eat properly for weeks thinking about my little tummy on that carpet.' This year, Lorde attended once again, sporting a chic slate Thom Browne look that matched the 2025 theme of 'Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.' Returning to the Met four years later, the singer said it was 'moving' to be back in the same place with an entirely new mindset regarding her body. 'I was there last night fully in myself, and I didn't have to not eat, I didn't have to go to the gym a million times,' she told her fans. 'I was just fully in myself. Quite beautiful.' Lorde has slowly been sharing more and more about her struggles with eating and body image in the lead-up to her new album Virgin, which arrives June 27. On lead single 'What Was That,' released in April, she sings, 'I wear smoke like a wedding veil/ Make a meal I won't eat.' In a recent interview with Document Journal, the New Zealand native elaborated on the lyric: 'I had made my body very small, because I thought that that was what you did as a woman and a woman on display … I thought, 'I'm small. This will communicate to people that I'm taking my position seriously.'' Now, Lorde says she feels fully 'embodied,' meaning this year's Met — which took place one day prior to her voice note — was a much better experience. 'It was definitely my favorite Met,' she said in her message before remarking, 'It's really a reality check of where you're at in relation to, you know, your own public image and how you feel in your body, how you feel among your peers and how you feel in culture and all that sort of stuff.' One moment from Monday night (May 5) that did make her 'so cringed out' at herself, though, was when she commented that her dress was an 'Easter egg' in an interview with Vogue correspondent Emma Chamberlain, leading fans to believe the singer was teasing something musical through her attire. 'More will be revealed,' she'd added during the red-carpet chat. 'To me it really represents where I'm at gender-wise. I feel like a man and a woman, kind of vibe.' But in her voice note, Lorde clarified, 'Just as it was leaving my mouth, I was like, 'What are you talking about? No, it's not [an Easter egg]. The language of Easter eggs, I love it as a concept … [but] for what I was referring to, it was not my vibe,' she said. 'Please accept me feeling like a loser, I'm sure you don't care at all.' Lorde says she's 'in the middle gender-wise' as she opens up on identity

New Zealand singer Lorde has opened up about her gender identity as she reveals that she has a much more 'expansive' feeling. The Kiwi singer, 28, is set to release her new album Virgin next month, her first album since Solar Power in 2021. While promoting her new record, the pop star has revealed that she had a different approach to this album, and has had some major changes in her personal life. 'My gender got way more expansive when I gave my body more room,' she told Rolling Stone. The outlet adds that this change in gender expression is clear in her album, and in the opening track, she sings: 'Some days I'm a woman/Some days I'm a man.' When asked by the outlet how she now identifies herself, Lorde revealed that it's something she has spoken about with fellow pop sensation Chappell Roan. '[Chappell Roan] asked me this, she revealed. 'She was like, 'So, are you nonbinary now?' 'And I was like, 'I'm a woman except for the days when I'm a man.' I know that's not a very satisfying answer, but there's a part of me that is really resistant to boxing it up.' She said that she still considers herself a cis woman and her pronouns are still she/her but she says she describes herself as 'in the middle gender-wise.' She added that as part of her gender discovery, she has found herself trying on men's clothing in shops in 2023, adding: 'This was before I had any sense of my gender broadening at all.' She also revealed that she is now off birth control after a decade on hormones and most definitely feeling the effects, saying that her natural menstrual cycle is the best drug she's taken. 'But I hadn't ovulated in 10 years. And when I ovulated for the first time, I cannot describe to you how crazy it was. 'One of the best drugs I've ever done.' Speaking about drugs, the singer revealed that she explored a drug therapy that saw her combine MDMA and psilocybin therapy (a type of PTSD treatment) to try and help her combat her crippling stage fright. She revealed that the sessions took place between 2022 and 2024 and had a huge impact on her mind and body. 'I was touring without stage fright for the first time,' she said, adding that it also helped her to connect with her music. 'I would play 'Supercut, and all of a sudden there was a hook around my guts and everyone in the room was having the same feeling, [like] there'd been a huge pressure change. It made me realise how much I love and kind of need that very deep, visceral response to feel my music.' More Trending In an interview earlier this year with Document Journal, she spoke more about how the psychedelic therapy helped her. 'Reading is huge for me. Psychedelic therapy, honestly, is a huge cornerstone to my well-being and practice and just keeps me alive to what's out there and what's possible.' She then emphasised the importance drug-taking has played in her art: 'I'm obviously really fortunate not to have the genes of an addictive personality, but I remember first smoking weed as a teenager, and seeing my brain for what it was. 'If I hadn't smoked weed, I don't think I would be an artist.' Got a story? Lorde clarifies her gender identity: ‘I feel like a man and a woman'

Lorde has made further comments regarding where she's at with her gender identity. Speaking to Vogue's red carpert correspondent Emma Chamberlain at the Met Gala 2025, the singer elaborated on the meaning behind her custom Thom Browne look. 'This is custom Thom Browne, [and] this is my creation. It's something of an Easter egg,' she explained before adding: 'More will be revealed.' 'I just love the open back,' she went on. 'It really represents where I'm at, gender-wise. I love it. I feel like a man and a woman, you know?' ADVERTISEMENT Advertisement The artist's statements echo that which she made earlier this month in an interview with Document Journal. In a conversation with artist Martine Syms, Lorde spoke of writing her recent single 'What Was That' and how it coincided with her 'gender broadening'. 'Becoming single, but also really facing my body stuff head-on, and starting to feel my gender broadening a little bit. Just being back in my house and feeling this big wave of grief. I just kept thinking, What was all of that?' she recalled. 'I was also coming into my masculinity a bit more as well' 'We were working in the East Village, and we walked past this flyer. I think it was for joining a band or something, and it said, 'Do you have the stones?' And I was like, 'Whoa, that's tight,'' the 'Green Light' hitmaker recalled. 'I didn't understand what it was saying at first. I know now it's like, do you think you have the balls? But it gave me this feeling that there was a mysticism to it. 'The stones' felt like, do you have the sort of touchstones or the talismans to go there? ADVERTISEMENT Advertisement 'Seeing that as I was also coming into my masculinity a bit more as well. That became the thing we would say to each other while making music,' she went on. 'When there was a crossroads where we'd want to take it there but we were scared, we'd be like, 'Do we have the stones?'' Virgin, the new album by Lorde, is out on 27 June.
