Colorado Rockies game no. 61 thread: Chase Dollander vs. Sandy Alcantara
Looking to build off their fourth road win of the year on Monday and hoping to capture their first series win of the season, the Rockies (10-50) will take on the Marlins (23-35) again today in Miami. Chase Dollander (2-5, 6.28 ERA) will return from the 15-day IL to make the start. Dollander was pulled from his last start on May 18 with right forearm tightness. The RHP rookie attributes throwing too many pitches — 38 — in the first inning against the Diamondbacks, according to Thomas Harding. Despite that rough first inning, Dollander only surrendered one run on three hits with six strikeouts and two walks in 4 2⁄ 3 innings. Hopefully, shorter, more efficient innings can prevent cramping in his throwing arm in the future. Advertisement To clear a spot on the roster, Tanner Gordon was sent back down to Triple-A Albuquerque. In other news, closer Zach Agnos was placed on the bereavement list and Angel Chivilli was called up from the Isotopes to fill the opening. Read more about today's moves here. The Rockies will face 2022 NL Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara. The 29-year-old RHP isn't looking like his 2022 self this season. He is 2-7 with an 8.47 ERA with 40 strikeouts and 29 walks in 51 innings over 11 starts. In May, Alcantara went 0-4 in five starts with an 8.46 ERA, which includes his last start against the Padres when he was hit hard, giving up six runs on seven hits with four walks in four innings. After being pulled from Monday's game, Ezequiel Tovar won't be playing the remainder of the series against Miami. First Pitch: 4:40 p.m. MT Advertisement TV: Radio: KOA 850 AM/94.1 FM, KNRV 1150 AM (Spanish) Lineups: More from

Rangers 2, Rockies 1: One pitch spoils Dollander's gem
It was a true Wild West duel in Arlington tonight, and the Rockies nearly won. But, as we know, 'close only counts in horseshoes' and the Rockies, unfortunately, play baseball and not horseshoes and they fell 2-1 in Warren Schaeffer's managerial debut. Dealin' Dollander Chase Dollander had a special night, even if it ended on a sour note. The rookie right-hander absolutely cruised through five innings, He gave up a leadoff walk to Evan Carter, but then sent down 15-straight Rangers on (##) pitches before allowing another walk to Tucker Barnhart in the sixth. That fell just short of Germán Márquez's rookie outing of 16-straight back in 2017 against the Washington Nationals. Advertisement Ezequiel Duran then grounded into a force out at second (Barnhart) and Carter struck out swinging on four pitches, but the extra baserunner proved costly as Wyatt Langford hit a two-run homer to put the Rangers up 2-1. Dollander then walked Joc Pederson, but then struck out Adolis García on three-straight pitches up in the zone (two fastballs and a curveball). In total, Dollander pitched six innings, allowing two runs on just the one hit with seven strikeouts and three walks. He three 85 pitches, 49 for strikes. Hunter is good, man After falling a single short of the cycle yesterday, Hunter Goodman kept up his hot streak in today's game. In the second inning, he got that elusive single to lead off the inning and was balked over by Tyler Mahle (only the fourth balk in his career!). Goodman then rounded home after Nick Martini singled to right to put the Rockies up 1-0. They might not have won Schaeffer's managerial debut, but they did score first! Advertisement He struck out swinging in the fourth, but doubled in the seventh and was knocked to third by a Sean Bouchard flyout. In total, Goodman went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a strikeout (the only Rockie to record multiple hits) and continued his five-game hitting streak. Might the youngster be one to watch for the Midsummer Classic in July? So close, and yet so far! As was said in Ted Lasso, 'it's the hope that kills you.' The Rockies had a chance to take back the game in the ninth, but unfortunately squandered it. To kick things off, Ryan McMahon singled on a deflected line drive to reach base first. Luke Jackson, who was hit by the pitch on the hand, was then lifted in favor of Jacob Webb. Goodman grounded into a force out at second, so he was then the man on first base instead of McMahon. Michael Toglia singled to advance Goodman, and then was replaced by pinch runner Owen Miller. Bouchard then walked to load the bases, but Kyle Farmer grounded into a double play to end the threat and the game. Advertisement Sure, they lost again and fall to 7-34 on the season, but it had more energy to it than we've seen recently. Even when they were down after the Langford homer, it didn't feel quite as dire. We'll see how they play tomorrow. Up Next The Rockies and Rangers will do-si-do a second time tomorrow. Kyle Freeland (0-5, 5.41 ERA) will face Rangers righty Jack Leiter (2-2, 5.09 ERA). First pitch is at 6:05pm MT. See you then! More from

Rockies end 8-game losing streak, beat Sale and Braves 2-1 behind Doyle homer to improve to 5-25
DENVER -- The Colorado Rockies ended an eight-game losing streak as Brenton Doyle hit a tiebreaking home run off reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Chris Sale in the third inning of a 2-1 win over the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday. Colorado had lost 16 of its previous 17 games and had been outscored by 78 runs. At 5-25, the Rockies avoided joining the 1988 Baltimore Orioles as the only teams since 1901 to lose at least 26 of their first 30 games. Doyle homered on an inside fastball, ending an 0-for-20 skid with a 421-foot drive to left-center. He later doubled. Rookie Chase Dollander (2-3), the Rockies' No. 9 overall pick in the 2023 amateur draft, allowed one run, two hits and three walks in 5 2/3 innings with four strikeouts. Making his fifth big league start, he got his second win. Dollander came out after trying to pitch with a cracked fingernail. Jake Bird, Seth Halvorsen and Zach Agnos finished a three-hitter, with Agnos getting three outs for his first major league save. Bird struck out two in 1 1/3 innings and has 24 strikeouts in 17 2/3 innings. Colorado pitchers had allowed 14 hits in each of the first two games of the series. Ryan McMahon went 0 for 3 and extended his hitless streak to a team record 0 for 34, one more than Desi Relaford in 2005. McMahon has two hits in his last 58 at-bats. Doyle's solo home run in the third inning ended a skid of 20 consecutive at-bats without a hit. Sale (1-3) struck out a second-high 10 and walked none, allowing two runs and five hits. The Braves had won nine of their previous 11 games. Sean Bouchard put Colorado ahead with an RBI groundout in the second, but Michael Harris hit a run-scoring groundout in the third. After replacing Dollander with a 2-1 lead, Bird struck out Ozzie Albies with runners on first and second. Atlanta didn't put a runner in scoring position for the remainder of the game. Atlanta's Eli White ended a streak of six consecutive games with at least one extra-base hit. Rockies: LHP Kyle Freeland (0-4, 5.93 ERA) starts Thursday at San Francisco, which goes with RHP Justin Verlander (0-2, 4.99). ___
