Roosters turn to Dom Young amid Origin depth test
Dom Young will have a chance to reassert his NRL credentials as the Sydney Roosters turn to the out-of-favour winger amid five State of Origin absences. Robert Toia's shock Queensland call-up has cleared a spot for Young in Saturday's clash with Cronulla, less than two weeks after Roosters coach Trent Robinson lashed rumours Young was being pushed out of the club. Young, a reserve grader for the past three weeks, joins debutant Benaiah Ioelu in being promoted to the top flight as the Roosters cover for five Origin absences and Naufahu Whyte's knee injury. Easts' opponents Cronulla are one of only two teams without any players in the Origin series opener and also welcome Teig Wilton onto the extended bench following a shoulder injury. Jake Arthur will line up against former side Parramatta for his first NRL game in more than a year and a half, replacing Manly and Queensland captain Daly Cherry-Evans in the Sea Eagles' halves. "Jakey brings reliability," Manly centre Reuben Garrick said. "Every time he's stepped up to the grade, he's done a tremendous job for us. I have all the faith in the world in Jakey." Manly hooker Lachlan Croker is making his first NRL appearance of the season after recovering from a knee injury to claim a spot on the bench. "He's already made an immediate impact during training and stuff this week," said Manly centre Tolu Koula. Dean Hawkins has been named in the Eels' halves, replacing Mitch Moses as he did during the NSW playmaker's foot injury lay-off earlier this season. Fighting to ignite their sputtering season, the league's worst attacking side Newcastle have named a halves combination of Jack Cogger and Tyson Gamble for the clash with Penrith in Bathurst. Fletcher Sharpe moves to fullback to replace Queensland star Kalyn Ponga and there is still no room for Jackson Hastings anywhere in the 17. Scott Sorensen returns from suspension for the Panthers, who are without five Origin players and have also lost recruit Isaiah Papali'i to a short-term knee injury. Luke Garner is also unavailable through concussion, leaving the Panthers to name Preston Riki in the second row and hand Austin Dias his club debut. Brad Schneider partners Blaize Talagi in the halves, with fellow playmaking option Jack Cole returning to the side via the bench. Daniel Saifiti is back from a shoulder injury for the Dolphins' game against Canterbury, who welcome Josh Curran back from a three-game suspension. Round 12 teams: NRL clubs scrambling to cover Origin stars, Roosters recall flyer
Dom Young is back on the wing for the Roosters after the English flyer was recalled to replace Origin rookie Robert Toia for Saturday night's game against the Sharks. Young hasn't played since round seven and has spent the past few weeks in reserve grade, with reports of an immediate release to the Knights falling apart after a disagreement over costs between the clubs. He is one of a number of changes for the Roosters who will be without five players to Origin, with Makahesi Makatoa and Salesi Foketi starting in the front row, while dynamic dummy-half Benaiah Ioelu will make his debut off the bench. The Sharks will be without winger Sam Stonestreet (ankle) but they do get Mawene Hiroti back for the trip to Gosford. Jake Arthur will get a rare start at halfback in place of Daly Cherry-Evans, with the No.7 to end his NRL exile against the team he debuted for back in 2021. Haumole Olakau'atu will leave Blues camp for Friday's match, while veteran prop Matt Lodge will play his first game of the year off the bench where he's joined by Lachlan Croker who has overcome persistent injuries. The Bulldogs will be without a stack of stars to Origin and injury, with the ladder leaders welcoming Josh Curran back from suspension for their game against the Dolphins. Blake Wilson starts on the wing, Blake Taaffe has been named at centre and Bailey Hayward is at lock against a Dolphins side that has moved Jake Averillo to fullback. The Panthers have been forced to make a stack of changes with Daine Laurie named at fullback, Brad Schneider at halfback and Lindsay Smith at lock, with Luke Garner and Liam Henry in the back row. They face a desperate Knights side that has moved Fletcher Sharpe to fullback to replace Kalyn Ponga, while they also get Leo Thompson back in the front row. ‘Not best practice': Lessons learnt as Dom Young's move back to the Knights stalls, Dane Gagai prepares for NRL game milestone
Adam O'Brien has paid tribute to milestone man Dane Gagai as he prepares to join the NRL's 300-game club on Friday night, with the Knights coach not wanting to talk too much about the club's pursuit of Dom Young that has seemingly fallen apart this week. It seemed just last week that the English winger was set to rejoin the Knights this season after being linked with a move away from the Roosters who had dropped him to reserve grade. But negotiations have stalled, with Roosters coach Trent Robinson slamming the Knights and Young's agent for the way they handled the potential deal. Robinson was disappointed that the Knights approached his club but then demanded the Roosters pay Young's salary when they were the ones who instigated a potential move. 'Probably a thing that I've learnt out of the week is that doing your recruitment and retention through you guys (the media) is not best practice,' O'Brien said, with the Knights boss working alongside Robinson at the Roosters in the past. 'Right now he's a Rooster and I'm focused on Fletcher Hunt being on the wing for us tomorrow night.' Hunt will make his NRL debut against the Eels after scoring five tries in his past five games in reserve grade, but it's a man at the other end of his career who has attracted the headlines this week. Gagai, 34, made his debut back in 2011 and has enjoyed an incredible career at several clubs as well as on the representative stage for Queensland and Australia. O'Brien praised Gagai's relentless pursuit of excellence and said he had the rare ability to make other players around him lift at training and in games. 'It's really special for him to join the 300 club, especially the way that he's played is quite remarkable because every tackle and every run is a full-on contest for Dane,' he said. 'To do that over that length of time (is quite an achievement). Three hundred games is a lot of pre-seasons, that's a lot of hill sessions and a lot of wrestle sessions. 'To do that in front of our local supporters and his family is very fitting.' The Knights are chasing a much-needed win against an Eels side featuring Dylan Brown, who will move to Newcastle next season on the richest deal in NRL history. It's been a rough few weeks for the Knights who will be without powerhouse winger Greg Marzhew (knee) for the next few games. 'He's had some surgery on an MCL,' his coach said. 'I think it was initially 4-6 (weeks), but he's a very good healer. 'He's very optimistic and he's told me 'I'll be right for next week', but I don't think that's the case. It's not an extended thing, so he'll be back before you know it.'

‘Holier than thou': Roosters slammed as ‘shameless' Wayne Bennett act backfires
With the Roosters' signing of Brandon Smith now officially considered a failure after he was released from his contract early to join Souths, the club's approach to recruiting in recent seasons has been questioned. FOX LEAGUE, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every game of every round in the 2025 NRL Telstra Premiership, LIVE in 4K with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited-time offer > In addition to Smith, it appears $500,000-a-year winger Dom Young could also be on the move, short of 18 months into his deal with the Roosters. The Smith and Young situations have capped what has been a pretty disappointing few years by the Roosters on the recruiting front. NRL360 co-host Braith Anasta said he wasn't too surprised the Smith signing didn't work out, given the Roosters signed him to be their starting hooker. 'I was the most outspoken about the Smith signing,' he said. 'The Roosters needed a specialist nine, they got rid of their grand final winning nine and got a 13 (Smith) and tried to transform him into a nine. 'He can player nine pretty well but he's a lock in my opinion. 'I didn't think the experiment would work and it didn't and I copped a bit of criticism for it.' Smith joined the Roosters in 2023, and while there were some glimpses, Smith didn't play up to his huge $850,000 a year deal. When the Roosters inked a deal with Cowboys star dummy-half Reece Robson, Smith became expendable. The polarising Smith left the Storm to join the Chooks, rejecting offers from the Cowboys and Dolphins, the latter of which he gave then-coach Wayne Bennett a verbal commitment. For Paul Crawley, this recruiting failure is a big indictment on the Roosters and their 'holier than thou' approach when trying to land big name free agents. 'My question goes back with Brandon, when he went to the Roosters the Storm had tabled an offer, the Gold Coast, Cowboys wanted him and the Dolphins did as well. It wasn't as if he wasn't a wanted man,' Crawley said. 'What got him over the line at the Roosters was the holier than thou approach that they took him out to meet the board, he had pizzas at Robbo's. He was wined and dined and Smith came out after that and said that Robbo said he'd make him a better man. 'Where I had a problem with it was that the Roosters knew they were signing one of the game's great rouges who was a wild child. 'Two and a half years later they've shown him the door because there's a shiny new toy that's come along in the form of Reece Robson. 'They didn't give him (Smith) the time to come good on their side of the promise.' Veteran journalist Andrew Webster agreed with Crawley's stance. 'I reckon their recruitment been shocking in many respects,' he said. 'The way they flaunted his (Smith's) signing, particularly getting one over Bennett in getting him after he'd already done the deal with Bennett at the Dolphins. I've talked to (Roosters chairman) Nick Politis about it. It was pretty shameless with how they celebrated.' Young isn't out the door by any means, but he's clearly out of favour, having been dropped to reserve grade. It was understood last week that Young would be making his way back to the Knights, but according to Robinson, Newcastle have backtracked on how much they want to pay for the winger. That has stalled Young's move to the Knights for now. Crawley again slammed the Roosters for how the Young signing has played out. 'The Roosters didn't give Dom Young $500k to be good guys, they did it because he was playing great football at the Knights and he was a try scoring machine,' Crawley said. 'Now he's going to move back up this highway with his reputation in tatters. 'The Roosters have not made Dom Young a better footballer in their system. 'What gets me sometimes is the way that the Roosters publicly make out they can do it better than everybody else but they have just as many failures as the other clubs.'

Trent Robinson lashes Newcastle Knights over their handling of Dom Young
Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson has slammed the Newcastle Knights and Dom Young's management for how they've handled the star winger's potential early release, accusing his rivals of trying to 'bluff' his club throughout the process. A fed-up Robinson also confirmed that Brandon Smith had played his last game for the club and would join Souths this week after getting through his medical. While that has been a clean process, the three-time premiership-winning coach has called out the Knights for trying to get the Roosters to pay Young's salary for the rest of 2025 despite the club not pushing for a potential early release. The English winger is contracted until the end of 2027 after moving from the Knights to join the Roosters last year, but rumours of a possible return to the Hunter dominated headlines last week after he was dropped to reserve grade. Robinson is adamant that the Roosters never shopped the representative winger to the Knights, with the veteran coach airing his grievances during a rare Monday morning press conference. 'All that has been fairly annoying,' he said. 'That's not to do with any of you guys (the media), but the way it was put out there was that we were trying to push him out, which wasn't the case. 'Newcastle rang us having talked with his manager beforehand when he got dropped to try to get him out, and we said 'yes'. 'They wanted us to pay the whole year and we went 'no, if you want him (then you have to pay)'. 'The chairman said they had the money to take him now, and we agreed. The management wanted that, but then they've backtracked at the end of the week and today. 'That's really annoying. If you ask for something and you've prepared it, then you stick by it. They haven't done that and it's thrown Dom and us in a spin all this week when it wasn't our doing, so it's all a bit annoying. 'Dom hasn't done anything wrong in all of this. It's been an annoying week … it's not how you do things.' Robinson and Young spoke last week to work out who instigated it, with the coach stressing the club hadn't tried to push him out, while the winger said he didn't know where it had come from. Young's form had been an issue which is why Mark Nawaqanitawase replaced him on the wing, but Robinson said that was purely because the former Wallabies star was outplaying him and there was room for Young to return to the side. Any potential move now looks dead and buried unless the Knights offer to chip in a substantial sum, with Robinson happy for the winger to stay and fight to win back his spot in the team. 'I think they're trying to bluff us,' he said. 'We had not one discussion about letting Dom go. That wasn't a discussion at all. 'Then we get an approach from Newcastle and his management and they say 'we want this to happen'. 'They want us to release him and pay money for it when we weren't even thinking about releasing him. In what world does that happen? You asked, you said you had room in your cap, so get it sorted. 'You threw a guy's life upside down for a week and you put another club in, but just do it in the right way.' Meanwhile, Smith is set to join the Rabbitohs this week as he continues to recover from a serious knee injury that will keep him sidelined for another two months. Smith joined the Roosters in 2023 but never reached the stunning heights he did at the Storm, with the dynamic hooker signing with Souths for the next two seasons. 'Brandon is doing his medical this morning, so I think that's pretty clean and that should get sorted today. He'll move over there from I'd say tomorrow,' Robinson said. 'That will get the tick off today with Souths. 'I feel like the first year was difficult and he didn't hit the form that we wanted in that first year. There were reasons for that. 'He was on a tear last year. There was momentum building, and then he got the knee injury.'
