Black Community Honors recipients reflect on awards

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) — A group of individuals were honored for their community service and their contributions to the African American community at the Black Community Honors Awards on Saturday, Feb. 22. A couple of honorees expressed their gratitude and pride in the awards that they received. Music teacher Dominic Horton-Miller of Finn Academy said he was humbled to be the recipient of the Young People Community Award. His award was in recognition for his involvement in creating the drama club for grades four through six in September 2022. Elmira shoe store to receive Black Community Honor Award 'You know, growing up in this area, I'm from Bradford County, Pennsylvania, live in Corning now myself, and just seeing there's so many young kids in the community that are making impacts each and every day and I'm just really grateful to be a part of it, and grateful that I was recognized for the award,' said Miller. One of the awards, the Family Award, was given to two recipients, Malika and Michael Blanford, in recognition of raising three grandchildren for 23 years. 'It means a lot. I'm very grateful. I'm still processing myself. It means a lot to me,' Blanford said. 'Only God knows how much it means to me, and I thank him, and I'm grateful to him.
