Democrats push ‘Don't Ban Library Books Act'
CONNECTICUT (WTNH) — Some state Democrats are pushing a new bill they call the 'Don't Ban Library Books Act.'
Supporters of the bill say that it will create a system and procedures to evaluate books and other media that are being challenged based on content.
Legislators propose 'Don't Ban Library Books Act'
'By having some sort of made up kind of issue of these books that are in school that we don't like because people are a little different from us…that to me is a false argument,' State Sen. Bob Duff (D), Senate majority leader, said. 'Let's help children, but let's really help children, let's make sure that they're successful, that they're housed and fed.'
On the other side of the aisle, Republicans say that some of this has been misconstrued.
'No one's trying to ban things,' State Sen. Rob Sampson (R) said. 'I've heard some folks on the other side mention books like Huckleberry Finn. That's not the issue. The issue are books…gender queer is what title I keep hearing about. It's just not appropriate for small children.'
The fight over library policies in Connecticut is taking place against the backdrop of a broader national debate over which books are appropriate for school libraries.
