Why the Senior Cup is the one trophy Donemana's Billy Dougherty is so desperate to win

They lost the Final last year to Newbuildings, but are the favourites to lift the famous trophy for the 24th time. Wicket-keeper Billy Dougherty was part of the last Donemana team to win the silverware in 2020 and, along with younger siblings DJ and Levi, has been a major part of their success this season. 'It couldn't have gone any better for us so far, as we are unbeaten in the League and still in all the Cups,' said Dougherty. "We've been playing good, attacking cricket, and the results have been great and hopefully will continue. 'We always look forward to the Cup and it's certainly the one trophy I want to get every year. I'm sure it won't be an easy game but if we play to our capability, we will hopefully get through to the next round.' Donemana make the short journey to Ardmore, who currently lead the Premiership, but their recent form has seen confidence dip, losing last week against Strabane and Ballyspallen. It would take something special for the Bleachgreen side to pull off a shock. Holders Newbuildings have a tricky looking encounter away at Strabane, and it could well depend on the X-factor provided by West Indian international Peat Salmon that decides the outcome between two evenly matched teams. There's not much to choose either between Brigade and Bready, who meet at Beechgrove. Scott Macbeth has been a revelation since his switch between the clubs, and the Donegal youngster might not be too far from an international call-up if he continues his form of the past few years. Former team-mate Gavin Roulston is another young player destined for higher honours and the game could well depend on who comes out top of their own personal battle. Eglinton opener Liam Doherty is another exciting player who topped 1,000 runs last season. The hard-hitting batsman could well hold the key to improving the village side's fortunes against a Coleraine outfit who are playing with great confidence under new captain Rory Knox. The Bannsiders look to have a good blend of youth and experience in their ranks and when overseas professional Louren Steenkamp settles, they will be an even tougher proposition in the top flight.

Donemana complete Irish Senior Cup record chase to defeat Waringstown

Set 359 for victory, Donemana still needed 49 from the last three overs with just three wickets left but David O'Sullivan hit Waringstown professional Daniel van der Merwe for five sixes in an eight-ball over which reduced the target to 15 off 12 balls. O'Sullivan, though, was caught by van der Merwe off the bowling of Ross Allen from the next ball he faced and the drama increased when Dwayne McGerrigle pulled a hamstring and needed a runner for the last over which started with Donemana on 353 for eight. Ricky-Lee Dougherty was on strike and a couple of twos and two wides, the latter a short ball from van der Merwe which went over the head of the batter, won the match - without McGerrigle having to face - with two balls to spare. The victory had been set up by 50s from David Dougherty, Ray Curry, sent in as the last over runner, and Anuj Jotin with Adam Dennison the only Waringstown bowler to go for less than six runs an over. The top two scorers in the match both came in the Waringstown innings, with James McCollum hitting 125 and captain Greg Thompson a whirlwind 74 not out from 33 balls, with nine fours and three sixes. His unbroken sixth wicket partnership of 89 with van der Merwe came from just 34 balls but it proved in vain. Van der Merwe, ironically, hit five sixes in his 36 from 13 balls. Before the drama at the Lawn, the best game of the day was in Cork, although it looked to be a comfortable win for Civil Service North when they reduced their hosts to 111 for seven. But a remarkable 105 by Munster Reds player Zubair Khan, from No 9, hoisted Cork County to 271. After the dismissal of professional Sean Davey for 46, CSN still needed 92 from the last 13 overs but captain Stuart Thompson's 94 not out saw them home with 10 balls to spare. In all, it was a bad day for Ulster clubs with Coleraine the only other North West winners – they bowled out Muckamore for 99 – and there will be only four NCU teams in the second round. A second wicket partnership of 195 between Chris Dougherty (105) and Jake Egan (128) was the basis of CIYMS' crushing 127 runs victory at Bready. Carson McCullough took five wickets as the home side were dismissed for 185. Lisburn captain Neil Whitworth also took five wickets as his side made it seven wins out of seven this season with a seven wickets win over Brigade at Wallace Park, James Hunter hitting 89 not out from 71 balls to seal victory at the start of the 28th over. Instonians reached their target of 179 in exactly the same time, for the loss of four wickets, to ease past Strabane at Shaw's Bridge. Captain Nikolai Smith, opening in place of Ireland call-up Cade Carmichael, top scored with 54. Elsewhere, there were heavy defeats for Woodvale, North Down and Cliftonville Academy by Malahide, Pembroke and Balbriggan respectively but Templepatrick put up a good fight in their first ever Irish Cup game, before going down to Clontarf by five wickets. Captain Ross Bryans hit 77 in the NCU side's 236. Tom Mayes keen to prove his worth to Waringstown and Ireland after his injury nightmare

However, to add insult to injury, the side strain that limited his appearances to just seven saw Cricket Ireland decline to renew his retainer contract for 2025. That has motivated the 24-year-old South African, who has an Irish passport through his paternal grandparents, to try even harder, and he has certainly hit the ground running with a century in the first game of the campaign and a six-wicket haul in the second, no doubt helped by a successful pre-season tour with Ireland Wolves. 'I've been working hard on my batting over the winter with a few coaches in South Africa and while I've not changed too much technically, it's more a question of confidence,' he explained. 'I've always had it in me and it's about time that I showed it. I was blessed to be on that Wolves tour, playing at that level with those coaches and facilities. It was good to put in some good performances there personally and it was a great confidence booster to take into the season here and hopefully stay in the selectors' minds. 'With Ireland having money issues this year, there were cuts to the number of players offered contracts. I missed out but there are chats, and if I can keep playing good cricket then that hopefully will take of itself.' Now fully settled here and in a relationship with CSNI cricketer Abi Leckey, Mayes is keen to repay the faith Waringstown have in him. 'I'm very keen to add value to Waringstown who are one of the biggest clubs in Ireland. I want the team to have even more success as the season rolls on, and certainly want to play an integral part in that, hopefully bringing more trophies to the club.' Waringstown suffered a blip in their title defence on Monday losing by 12 runs to CIYMS, but will be strong favourites to beat newly promoted Templepatrick, while the Belmont side entertain Muckamore on Saturday. In the other games Instonians will be fancied to account for Woodvale, CSNI might find it tough against North Down, while table-toppers Lisburn will aim to make it four from four at the Castle Grounds Meanwhile, in the North West, it's the opening round of the SportsHub Senior Cup where the seeded nature of the draw gives smaller clubs the chance to cause an upset or two. Sion Mills, the competition's most successful team with 29 wins, are back after an 11-year absence from the event and they have been given a home draw against a Coleraine side that has started the season well, sitting in second place in the Premiership table. Donemana start their quest to add to their 23 wins with a very tricky trip indeed down the Ballyheather Road to face neighbours Killyclooney. Fresh in their minds will be a shock loss in the League last year which almost derailed their Premiership title. Donemana though are a different beast with Irish international Andy McBrine in their ranks, and look to have acquired a quality overseas professional in Anuj Jotin. Holders Newbuildings have lost both their League games to date and won't be relishing the prospect of taking on a fired-up Glendermott at The Rectory. The availability of West Indian international Peat Salmon though could well make the difference. Bonds Glen will be without professional Divan Posthumus following the death of his father for their game at Ardmore, while Bready will be hoping to be back to full strength for the Tyrone derby at Fox Lodge. In the other ties, Strabane entertain St Johnston, Ballyspallen take on Brigade and Eglinton have home advantage over Burndennett.
